- How much lab power supply can you get for $450?
Triple isolated outputs, PC control, 0.05% accuracy, is it too good to be true?

NOTE: Yes, it's a long review, and I spend most of the time complaining about something. I wasn't going to spend the time to try and edit it down. Complaints on a post card please.

Dave hates when he can't use his knob.
Well, I have already paid for it, and I have nothing like it's capability in the lab. So I have the choice of either keeping it and using it, or selling it and try to find something of similar capability at the same price. I have also spent a lot of hours figuring out how to drive it, and it does work when you know how to drive it. Yes, it still annoys the crap out of me, but so does my Fluke 87's default AC current mode...
Thanks for replying, The fuse I need apparently is the 11 Amp version, the part numbers have been changed since this thing was first built, however, there is a place in Bangkok that has the part I need for about 650 Baht! Thanks for your help guys, appreciated.
I have not even watched it yet, but i know you so well now (watched all 439 EEVBlogs) that i can just give you a big thumbs up for these teardowns.
Great hands-on video, validating specs & testing.
Thorough video with a handfull of gold nuggets of good valuable info, topnudge
A joy to watch these older videos from when Dave were solid to the bone and in a class of his own..
looks like Atten Electronics gone down under, and sold their slT3 to some CN lottery chananagang
You know when you're trying to do something in a dream, like search the web or call the police and whatever you do it has unexpected consequences? Like dialing 999 puts you through to a takeaway or the phone crashes. That's what this power supply reminds me of, especially at 24:15
Very thorough review Dave. Great job!
I just bought an ATTEN mulitmeter, for about 25 dollars. the quality seems quite good for the money. At work I always used a fluke, but at home electronics is just a hobby for me so I didn't want to spend a lot. I was hoping Dave would take it apart, I wanted to see the insides.
When you was saying about the shoddy interface I was just thinking that this PSU makes an ideal bench desktop PSU - as no-one will want to nick it from your bench at the office...!
Hello EEVlog: I really like all your videos that you upload and publish on TH-cam, very complete on your part in terms of all your explanations and clear, simple and concise steps (a clarification: to make my comment easier for you, I went to the translator from Google I wrote my comment in Spanish and I was translating it into the English language and then I copied the translated language into English and pasted it in the comment bar on TH-cam and there I would send it to you in your language), I hope you have liked my comment, receive your answers as soon as possible, greetings and congratulations to you and everyone around you. From Lujan, Buenos Aires Argentina.-
Looks like if they'd fix the UI it'd be a nice bench supply.
4:50 ahh the sound of the big diesel inside the power house gives you confidence.
Perhaps someone could make up a nice serial user interface expansion unit for this power supply :) I assume the serial port also outputs current and voltage settings too?
You should hear one of our HP signal generators spinning up. Or a keithley SMU. Or the helium compressor. I'm glad we don't run that last one very often :>
Dave,
"OVP" has nothing to do with protectiong with failures.
Like "OCP" turns off the output when current limit is reached, "OVP" simply turns out the outputs when voltage limit is reached.
Very handy to charge batteries (automatically cuts power when end of charge voltage is reached)
If I was the one to design that, up down and select buttons for each channel, numeric keypad, current and voltage adjust buttons and an ok button
3-4 hours or so. Plus then a few more hours for TH-cam to process it.
Oh, I hadn't seen that before, it does look good.
glad i'm not the only one who feels that way.
I got a set of fuses for my 87 V on Amazon, way cheaper when you buy a set of 5. Fuse type is in your manual, if no manual check the Fluke website.
These companies should just give you like 20k AUD for a few weeks of consulting to fix up the firmware. It's a pretty precision bit of kit especially for the money but the shitty interface totally dissuades hobbyists such as myself from buying it. Hell, someone should just fix it themselves, rebadge it and sell it for +100. Edit: hahaha dave you should have left the relays in oscillation to see time to failure!!
Great review as always. I can believe the amount of fail in that UI, but you can't harp on the performance.
Great review. Lots of good info and test checks. Thanks for the thoroughness. It appeared to me that the actual circuitry worked very well and responded nicely except for the limit crossover concerns. The biggest problem seemed to be the Functional Logic. Typical Asian mentality.
Reminds me of my DSO quad: looks like hardware good enough for the specs, but the software drives me up the wall so that I stopped using it.
I think these manufacturers that have the hardware expertise but not so much software/UI people should just make it dead simple to exchange the software: well documented microcontroller interface to the hardware and e.g. a firmware pluggable by SD card. That way, for awesome hardware, good Open Source software will be available soon and sales skyrocket.
File size depends on amount of motion content in the video, as I use a Constant Quality setting in Handbrake.
Dave has already been using ustream. twitch seems focused on gaming, but I guess either is fine with me.. the problems were twofold, however; firstly, I don't know when he'd be on, and secondly we'd spend ages trying to get the setup tuned for audio levels etc. Fun times, but not getting things like the high quality closeups here.
Thanks for the review Dave. Gah! The crappy user-interface plague is spreading like wildfire. It's as if these companies have just a single employee working on the UI, and that person's brain is wired differently to the rest of mankind. Don't they ever give these products to normal people to test before they go to market?
Impedance mismatch reflections? I wonder if you can get rid of it by going through the voltages where the internal resistance is around 50 Ohms.
I uploaded it 32 seconds ago, you haven't even heard the intro yet!
"noo.. You can't just go in and use your knob like that" haha
I love the in depth reviews
Dave what happen with the classic phrase "I'm glad you ask"? That was always the best part of the video =P
Your videos are awesome, you improved a lot since your first video, thank you for sharing you knowledge with us for all these years.
Have a nice day ;)
New unit "multimeter widths" =)
18:35 - I bought a dual 30V power supply and modified the output for 40V instead. Not sure how customisable that one is, whether you could modify the firmware or any variable pots inside it that allow for higher voltage output.
Yep, teardown already uploaded, going live tomorrow. 45min worth.
Just a guess, but try to press shift and then cursor keys where the cursor keys don't seem to work...
Why do the rise and fall times always only go to 90%? Why not 100%? Seen it on a heap of equipment.
I haz been waiting for this. Thanks dave!
Yep. As you said one of the cheapest, it really works as that...
fast forward to about 56:00 to get to the meat of the review.
Spent hours and $450? Sounds like a bad deal to me. Wait until it fails on you and then you will be off the roof! I would ditch it and get a better one. I have done that with my cheap 20MHz scope which I replaced with a Rigol, which I ended up replacing with an Agilent Infiniivision 2000, there is NO comparison, I guess same would applu here, the Rigol PSU looks good though. Anyway, have phun wiht it!!
I think that you sould switch off that new LED lighting Dave... It affects your measurments ;)
In for teardown. I hope it's hackable, it'd really help them sell some product actually :D
On the series mode voltage setting issue...
Could that be programmed the way it is because it was meant to be used for analog circuits with dissimilar + and - voltages? e.g. say +10v, ground, -5v?
Would that make any sense to use it in that manner?
How much does it cost? The PPS3305T-3S is also made by Siglent actually.
But for where i can buy from it ONLY costs 300SGD. Yep. 300SGD not including the shipping fee which probably is about 37$ ... 10kg(s) man
Looks like a GWInstek PST-3202 but with higher current output.
absolutely not, its about 400$ , it appear sometime as ghost on ebay, but you an can found it in other shops on the web
ha ha ha.... Having trouble with ya knob...
Seriously though, I honestly love your videos.
Very very in-depth and still watchable.
Well done
Wow i dont know what to think about this power supply, its quite useful but other thinks are shit and ready to kill your circuits if you dont pay attention!! Anyway, nice review as always Dave, thank you!
Dave (beep), next time (beep)you find the (beep)mute button on a device(beep) leave it muted, thanks. (beep)
I don't know what to do, help, switch relay, switch relay, panic!
Big LOL
There is nothing wrong with that user interface that a 5 kg sledgehammer would not fix.
Send this vid to atten.... perhaps they will fix the bugs... right...
The bugs are too much for me.. you have better patience than me Dave I would have thrown it in the bin.
what about pc control, can you make a separate review?
Could you check out what happens when you power the unit down? I have a power supply that produces junk on the output (when disabled) in its dying gasps!
great videos thanks, the siglent spd3000, is a better value for money, hope any siglent products to be reviewed soon!
5:44 .. Sounds like it has an integrated diesel generator.
I'm guessing the 66khz noise is some kind of longwave radio?
The beeper is driving me crazy! Why does it have to do such a long beep? That's like an error condition beep, 25ms blip would have sufficed. :-S
Would it be possible to hack it and write your own firmware?
His verdict at 57:45
awesome review
Hi there! Love the videos! I noticed you mentioned you use a Fluke 87 Multimeter - Wonder if you can help me? I have a Fluke 87 MKIII, and managed to blow the Current Fuse inside - There are separate fuses for V and A - Do you know where I can get the fuse in Asia / Australasia? And also - Do you know the part number as my old fuse has magically disappeared! Thanks a lot.
hey Dave, are you ever going to have it were people can actually see you through a webcam tearing apart stuff. there is a web site call Twitch.tv and they let you live stream for free. just a suggestion for what you can bring to the viewers.
Holy shit. What makes you think it's better value? It's freaking 800 bucks!
nice presentation
is the weight of that thing normal? 22 pounds in such a small package?
Dave, have you thought of replacing the fan?
Haha, that fan sounds like a lorry!
Great job!
"Thumbs sideways" - but you think it will be your main lab supply? - I'm soooo confused.
After watching this, I reached over and idly turned my Korad KA3005P on and off, and, well, it broke. Just thought it was amusing and perhaps ironic in a sad, Alanis Morissette sort of way. I posted a video response on my channel.
There a diesel engine inside 5:42?
What's inside of it like? or is that video coming?
I would think to set 1V you would press 01.00... Just an assumption...
try spd3303s on aliexpress it cost 450$ there
1 Ohm Constant Resistance: POWER SUPPLY KILLING MODE!
22:00
unable to set below 10v...do you need a leading zero? XD
What is the best power supply?
Can you try 30V @ 5A with only one channel ON?
Soo, where's the teardown Dave? ;)
I love to use my knob!
Thank you Dave. Excellent Video.
....and what a horrible awful miserable firmware.
Dave its the first time I actually hear you so frustrated!!
Haha, @ 41:00 - sounds like a sewing machine
Where did you buy it from?
450$ wasted, the problem is that most of the time they don't support their Product
Yes. It's one of the cheapest...
That carry handle looks really horrible !
you said nought AND zero, why?
nerd's exercise: hold and rotate in the air 10kg equipment for couple minutes.
Howdo you use your knob folks?
Much less noise.
What about the PC software? Is that any better?
You should hack it and write your own firmware! :)
TEARDOWN! TEARDOWN! TEARDOWN! Don't turn it on, TAKE IT APART!!!!
i would mod that fan so hard.
How long does it take you to upload a video this long?!?!? it takes me 2 hours to upload a 10 minuet video.
That hard to replace the fan, huh? xD
It's gnd not earth. ;)
I can't find the bloody video.
