We are normally taught to listen to each “entrance” of a fugue’s subject and that is quite manageable. It’s much harder to keep track of the other voices at the same time, to be aware of everything that’s happening. How can we divide our attention between several musical lines at once?

That Prelude and Fugue are one of my favorites. Wonderful pointers discussed here. Thank you!

Wonderful tutorial. Are you suggesting that one should not accentuate a fugal subject, or just not overdo it so as to allow all of the voices to be heard? I have found that when playing a Bach fugue on the piano, one should very clearly accentuate the fugal subject every time it is introduced. Thank you for your dedication to Bach. Love the piano BTW.

You nailed it: I am suggesting that all voices need to be considered as important and contributing to the synergy. It's a matter of our attention. Two voices is a starting point. There is no "subject" in this prelude so what do you do? How do you interpret it? What do you play louder? I am speaking about something "intangible" because it depends on one's mental state, not on learning to play some notes louder than others.
