You mentioned that forests can be used to set the tone. That is brilliant!
I googled “emotion wheel” and started to imagine what a forest or a feywild would look like to reflect or convey that emotion. A curious forest? A jealous forest? A disillusioned forest? Maybe they are not all playable ideas but it was a fun thought experiment.
Thank you. Your videos are the best.

I love the idea of a disillusioned or jealous forest

Thank you very much, I took a 60 day break but now I'm back and more content then ever before, :)

Well, you know if it isn't a maintained forest, your vision is impaired due to vegetation. By the dark everything turns into a grey moss except the sky. Meaning anyone who hasn't been adventuring without lights usually can't see further than 10m. Tracking without nightvision with only torch is kind of a nightmare.
Use streams, small ponds, stuff... just to color the game if you are RP and not roll play.
Some plants know near buried treasures the lore says (you are the DM, you are the lore!)
I use my forests to make the enemy go hiding and appear at some other random point, go stealth.... I use small crevices between to make my players hide from something. I block the view of a path with a few trees and let them sneak much closer.
I put in wild boar paths just to let them move. I turn them shrubbery into a sanctuary in a winter snow storm.
I gave them a blind map once setting up mountains and destination but not which side is North. They debated for half a hour

This really depends on the type of forest. I have traveled through 36 states? Hiked through manicured and un manicured forests.
Every biom has a very different vegetation under the canopy.
But yeah regardless, when night hits with a heavy canopy almost zero light makes it in.

Loved it. I'm certainly going to use forests differently going forward.

A little inspiration can go a long way. 😀
