Short story: NL is high on cough meds and clearly proves that we need a highschool class on OTC med literacy.
Long story: I've worked in pharmacy for around 6-7 years now. I know NL's job is to be "funny" and give hot takes, but this just adds to the never ending medicinal illiteracy that plagues modern society.
First, most of the drugs he listed do not have a literature use as "cough medicine."
Phenylephrine is a decongestant that, for the US at least, is being discontinued due to being useless. Pseudoephedrine is also a decongestant that is regulated by the FDA which is why "the computer decides." It's actually the FDA deciding 🤷♂️ Anyways, decongestants only reduce nasal pressure, AKA if you can't breathe in or out through your nose cuz its clogged, and do nothing for cough.
The only drug he actually listed that has approved use as a cough suppressant is Dextromethorphan (DM).
The only other drug he listed that MAY help with cough is guaifenesin and this is a crap shoot. Guaifenesin (mucinex) is an expectorant that helps break down mucus in the chest and guess what? To do that, it usually MAKES you cough! Therefore, if you have no mucus in your chest at all, you don't need this "ingredient." Also, many studies find that guaifenesin is less effective than drinking lots of water so you may just want to up your water intake before messing with drugs. However, I said it MAY help with cough right? Well, if you have no more mucus in your chest, then you'll probably cough less. So, sometimes it does help but it depends on the symptoms of your illness (ex. wet vs dry cough).
I'm gonna end with a personal pet peeve of mine. For anybody still reading, stop buying stuff like "dayquil" and "nyquil." You should try to purchase OTC drugs based on symptoms, not based on brand names that overload you with shit you don't need. Our bodies are all different and metabolize drugs differently so maybe you'll say "nyquil works for me!" Great, you can keep spending $5-10 extra dollars all you want, but maybe if you tried the drug by itself it would work the same/better. Regardless, there's no need to have 90% of the drugs in these products if you're only trying to treat one symptom.
Usually, I love NL's hot takes and he'll normally admit when he has no knowledge on a topic. But, this was clearly a -1 due to ignorance and frustration, sorry NL.
+2
I think he did say that he is ignorant in the clip but I have a question. Can you just ask for the specific drug you need, say I need DM because I have a cough. Would they give me DM in whatever form it be. And if I do this will I be put on a list or something for future pharmacies to know about. Asking for a friend.❤
@@CaptainDC-ji4sd Bro is trying to get a DXM plug
@@onechippyboi No its for my friend I swear. She has an itchy throat and I'm not long enough to reach it. 🤣
@CaptainDC-ji4sd I don't know how it works in other countries/states. I work in the USA, New Jersey. At our pharmacy, I can't "add in" an OTC med to somebody's med list on file just because they asked. Where I live, pharmacies need prescriptions (either electronic, hand written, faxed, or verbally) directly from prescribers to actively fill or add anything to a profile.
In terms of asking, yes they will generally tell you the specific drug you're looking for. For instance, if you're looking for something for a dry cough most pharmacists will recommend Delsym which is purely Dextromethorphan with no other active ingredients. With that said, most retail pharmacies don't stock the OTC shelves so they won't actively hand it to you and will probably tell you what aisle it's in instead.
Now it's fine to write these down for your own personal med list, but I don't recommend it. Maybe write a list of what to use for what symptoms, but not include it in an active drug list. If you're just using it for a passing cold then that's short term which we call "acute" in the pharmacy. Your med list should mostly consist of long term meds (we call chronic) and recent acute meds (probably just a month or so would be good).
This might actually be his funniest take ive ever heard, "you deserve a little treat" in reference to taking heroine for a cough.
Whenever I get sick I simply watch Wonderwoman and am magically cured.
pretty sure he said heroin

yukari lean thumbnail is instant click
Yeah cold medicine isn't a preventative. It's basically just pain reliever and cough supressant to make you feel less like shit. You just need a lot of rest when you get sick. I'll sleep for ariund 8 hours in the day when I'm sick and i'll feel practically as good as new the next day. The way i see it, it's better to do literally nothing at all for one day than to keep trying to exert yourself only able to go at 50% efficienecy for like a week.
Also theres some studies that show zinc can be a preventative if you take it RIGHT when you start to feel any kind of symptoms. It's not necessarily proven but ill take a lil zinc cough drop when i feel a tickle and itll go away completely sooooo...
Gotta wrap yourself up like a burrito and do some intense competitive sleeping, sweat it out, and wake up next morning feeling way better
Mfer is going into the odinsleep
@@TwoDementedGuys Odin obviously knows what he's doing bro
8 hours? That's what you should get when you're not sick. I'm currently in the midst of a ultra sore throat situation and the first couple of days I slept probably 12-16 hours... some of it may have been half asleep, hard to tell. Double blankets and comfy clothes so you can sweat it out.
@@SilverionX Maybe I misunderstood but I thought they meant throughout the regular day they get around 8 hours of sleep, so in addition to the regular sleep hours they sleep another 8.
He's so medicine-pilled
yeah why does he talk about it this much
Pill pilled
Unhinged thumbnail. Never thought I'd see NL and Yukari in the same room
Yukari must've accidentally made a gap in NL's brain that made him think they changed the cough med recipe. Or maybe librarian paid her so that this clip can materialize.
🕳🧠🤷♀☂
They did change it in the US, but he lives in Canada. He was going off on a problem his country doesn't deal with. He even mentions "The FDA made them change it", seemingly forgetting that's a US agency, and his country's version is split between the CFIA and Health Canada.
Also, it should be mentioned the FDA never made them take out the DM that makes Lien work, that's still in there.
@@sagecolvard9644 Yea i noticed that when a chatter pointed out FDA is american, and he basically was schizo ranting to the point of crafting bits to present to his good friends lmao
He's right that medicine doesnt work anymore but only because they give you the safest possible dose and its on you to decide if you want safety or effectiveness.
Are you perhaps a Touhou connoisseur Librarian?
I dabble
Clicked for the Wild Thumbnail stayed for the Conspiracy theories thank you Librarian.

NL's 'sick takes' might be some of my favourite.
Okay but he was cooking here 100% unironically we need to legalize drugs.
but not because you deserve a little heroin as a treat when you have a cough??
we need heroin in the water supply
there are certain three letter organizations that make a lot of their money (and connections) on the black market drug trade. i doubt theyd let it happen
i love Remilia, she is my wife

Dude
That's Lean !
Man the other day I learned that both
a) canadian cough meds have pseudoephedrine
b) you are not supposed to take pseudoephedrine if you're on vyvanse
in one fell swoop (I should have read the label)
Whenever I take pseudoephedrine it feels like a super mild form of vyvanse for me. Which makes sense since both are stimulants. I hate it
When r u gonna use the shitty old Umineko sprites for clickbait
Lmfao the day we get an NL x Umi crossover will be blessed
My manager's remedy for sore throat is shot of vodka to kill the germs and bump of coke throughout the day to numb the throat.
I'm not sure about the vodka part but coke worked really well to ease the pain.

Least based and correct NL take
Touhou roguelike?
I can't afford to be sick for too long, give me the heroine syrup for my cough. That's the vibe I'm getting here, but could be wrong.
Thanks bro, you've ruined the placebo effect of cough medicine for all of us.
I once asked my mom why she didn't just buy Gravol in the US when she flew down there and she said they don't sell it. I thought she just didn't know Gravol's clearly a brand name and they might sell it under a different name, but it turns out she's right. Gravol is Dramamine in the US and you need a prescription for it. I now understand why homeopathics took off because if your medicine is THIS restrictive then it's probably having trouble outpacing a sugar pill.
You do not need a prescription for dramamine
extremely based
