I don't know of a single person my age (50+) who doesn't immediately start singing along.... and clapping... whenever this song comes on... with the volume ALL the way up just to feel it even more. Loved your reactions... you two GET it!
It's actually not the original. It was sung by a guy named John Henry Kurtz. Written by a country songwriter named Mentor Williams. Dobie definitely made it his though.
@@sealdrup Steve, the songwriter is the brother of Paul Williams who wrote a lot of hits for the Carpenters, the love song from a Star is Born called Evergreen and Three Dog Night just to name a few. Songwriting runs in their family guess. :)
Absolutely beautiful, you guys did great to react to this wonderful classic. Yeah, got teary listening to it, me and this track go back a long way. 😇🕊️🌹💕
This just made me look him up. I knew he had passed away but I didn't realize it's 11 years already. And it said when he passed he "donated 100% of his musical assets and royalties in trust to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and to The Tennessee School for the Blind". What a special man. RIP.
I was 8 years old when this came out in 73. It is rare when a voice and a song like this come along, but when it does you appreciate it. I have appreciated this song and Dobie ever since. I still have the 45 of this(it's a record youngins). We need more of this type of music in the world for it would be a much better place. Simply, thank you all for doing this. Us older generation admire you younger folks for taking us back in time to simpler things. Much love.
One of my absolute favorite songs of all time. I was stunned by the dynamic beauty of this song since first hearing this at 12 years; way back in 1972. Someone covered this in like the early 90s, and all the stations would play would be that newer version. Dobie Gray RIP❤
This song always makes me think of my Grandma. I used to stay with her a lot back in the early ‘70s, and I always had my music with me. She actually liked a lot of it, and would ask me to play this record for her… it was one of her favorite songs. This one and Bill Withers’ “Lean On Me”. I miss my Grandma… ❤️
It's so great seeing people discover the awesome music I grew up on. You are on an amazing journey. If you haven't heard Mother's Finest Baby Love you are in for a treat! (Studio Version)
I don't know his other work, but his voice is just beyond great, simply stunning. Always loved this song from when I fist heard when I was in elementary school (long time ago).
This is one of those songs that is so good when it comes on you listened to it again ALL THE WAY THRU. You never cut it off in the middle. Dobie's voice has nice surprises all the way thru!
Love this song! It was a huge hit for Dobie Gray in 1973. His music crossed genres of soul, country & pop. An earlier hit by him in 1965 was "The In Crowd".
It is hard to imagine how big of a hit this was for Dobie Gray back around the early 1970s. It was everywhere and on every rock radio station. Part of my teen years that I always remember whenever it gets played. Superior Asia and BJ! And I'm like you BJ. Rock and the Blues comforts my inward being if the song is right. And almost anything by Sohyang! 😏🎸😎
Thank you! This was one of my favorite songs when I was a teen in the 70's and still is. Dobie Gray's voice was so distinctive and soulful. I can just close my eyes and I'm transformed back to a much simpler time, a better time. Bless you both, you've made an old man smile.
Such a great song and voice. A few years before he passed away, I talked to Dobie Gray, and Michael McDonald on the phone. They were discussing making an album together. That would've been a helluva duo.
Hey y'all, I grew up in the early '60's and '70's and everybody knew this song no matter what color you were! He had an amazing voice and the music/guitars in this was superb! What a true classic he is! Great reaction y'all! From an old white country boy in Sophia,N.C.
I cannot believe it's been 50 years since I last heard this song at my graduation dance back in 1972. Now that I am a 68-year-old senior citizen. The song still moves me. Awesome!
When I was younger I called a radio station (KSHE-95 in STL) to find out the name of this song and actually got the DJ on air. She made me sing it on air before she would tell me the name!
Truely an awesome song & my most favorite of all. And nobody can do it better than Dobie Gray. The lyrics are so point on....’day after day I’m more confused but I look for the light though the pouring rain’....‘I don’t understand the things I do’....’the world outside looks so unkind’....‘just give me the beat, boy, & free my soul, I want to get lost in your rock & roll & drift away’! I got so excited when I saw y’all had reacted to it. And I wasn’t disappointed, loved that y’all appreciated this wonderful song also but I knew y’all would. I’ve been enjoying y’all discovering all the great music I grew up on. Keep up the great work!
Awww you got me again!!!😥🥰❤️ Damm it, my dad used to play and sing this🎸🎸🎸 I forgot about this song...until now. Loving the trip down memory lane guys😍❤️ Love this...thanks!!
Oh man I loved this song as a new teenager in the early 70s. I remember getting the 45 at Woolworths and darn near wore it out. 1973 started my teen years. Thanks for the memories.
This song makes me so nostalgic. Nothing makes me see my daddy's grin again like this song. He always loved this song so much. It always made him calm and happy. Music was huge in my family. We were really taught to appreciate it. And when Uncle Kracker did it with Dobie Pop was a huge fan. Loved this reaction thank y'all
Played this for my Father - In - Law a Vietnam Vet at his wake when he passed away this song always makes think of him and have smile and sometimes a tear or two miss you Dad.
Wow! I was a high school senior when this came out and I could SO relate to every single line! Love this son, and it's been so long! Thanks, guys, you rock!
Thank you for going to the original Dobie Gray I grew up listening to this music and this masterpiece. Much love to you both please keep the classics coming you will find out why they are timeless classics.
Wife here..Absolutely Beautiful to watch you two discovering and enjoying.." free my soul".. I drift away 2 BJ...Asia..your voice is Gorgeous!!..This song has meant soooo much to me throughout my life!!!
If I had to choose one song to listen to for the rest of my life, this would be it Dobie Gray 's version of Drift Away. Been listening to it since it came out and it never gets old.
So glad you guys did this. I absolutely love this song. It takes me back to about the 3rd grade. It was his biggest hit. He was an R&B singer that found more success on the country charts. I think Uncle Cracker covered it about 20 years ago. I have it on playlists on several platforms sandwiched between Otis Redding’s “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay” and Noel Gourdin’s “The River”.
I think my all-time favorite quote by a musician was made by Dobie Gray. I was driving late at night back in the 60's,and he was being interviewed by a radio station dj,who asked him about the changes that have happened in his life since this song hit the air waves. Dobie thought about it for a few seconds, and said "Well,I have noticed that the girls treat me a lot differently now than they did when I was still working at the toilet seat factory". I lost it and almost ran off the freaking road due to laughing so hard.
The co-star on this record is the guitarist Reggie Young...actually, almost as many people talk about his playing on this as they do about Dobie Gray...incredible.
I was born in 1977. I was bought up listening to oldies, country, and gospel music. I always like to hear that song when it played on the radio. Songs like that stand the test of time.
LOVE Dobie Gray!!! Takes me back to my brother(he was a quadriplegic and he loved music) He influenced me by what he listened to. Great music!!! Great memories! Thanks for this reaction!! Other Dobie favorites "If you could see me now" "The time I loved you the most"
In times of intense stress and feeling overwhelmed throw a song like this on and watch it just melt away. Because of that this song to me has never aged a day! It's still timeless.
One of the ones I used to do back in the day. Makes me want to get back into it. Three of my cousins still have bands. My dad was a country singer, he was on radio back in the 60s
This song for me in the 70’s, when I was a teenager, was like the scene in “Almost Famous” on the bus when they were all singing “Tiny Dancer”. In my case we were hanging out in a school yard at night in Brooklyn. What a memory.
You can't beat this one. I could never figure out if he was saying "give me the beat boys" or "give me the Beach Boys", but it didn't make a bit of difference. I loved it either way. It's so peace-giving. Your faces were priceless.
You guys are a great couple! Your reactions are always great and I don’t think people realize how you two do it so many times and still keep it together. Keep doing what you’re doing! We enjoy it!!
I don't know of a single person my age (50+) who doesn't immediately start singing along.... and clapping... whenever this song comes on... with the volume ALL the way up just to feel it even more. Loved your reactions... you two GET it!

Amen, pass the cornbread!
It's actually not the original. It was sung by a guy named John Henry Kurtz. Written by a country songwriter named Mentor Williams. Dobie definitely made it his though.
