I check in to see your videos off and on to see what you have. I am from middle Ga and we went to Daytona Beach every year until I was 15. I visited again when I was 24(1979) and found a train store on the 2nd story of a building across the river in Daytona City. Up here in the Atlanta area, I was fortunate enough to work for over 17 years( There are Trains in 8 areas of the house but I am reducing that) at 2 different Train businesses. Trains have nothing to do with my College degree or my Master's degree but were more fun. Retirement is weeks away and I may eventually launch a TH-cam something in the future. I am glad you are working on the landscape. Get some Dave Frary videos on landscaping your layout. He is the Obey-won-Kenobi of Train layout landscaping. Just a side true and yet funny reality of sectional tubular track. I recently 2/2023 set up a large oval on my table of Lionel original 072 track. I bought it used about 8 years before and must have cleaned up the running surface back in 2021. Now I spent over a hour or two one evening, straightening and clamping the pins and the joining rail ends to fit tight and good, using a rail shaping tool and thin pliers, and a screw driver or two at times. Well the current set up is 16 curves and 6 straight all of the Lionel 072 type. I put a loc-on at one spot and the train would run the whole track but it had some weak spots for power. the funny thing was the power end I had my hook up on, that track and the two on either side had very poor connections, no matter how much I used the rail clamp tool, or pliers they remained so so with power weakness. However at my main hook up end, those two or three sections were just weird. Just one section to the right then the whole right side worked better, one to the left then the left side worked better, as in almost consistent the whole track around till it got back to the power end side. I had the lock-on power connected to the one in the middle of either side of my other trouble tracks. Both sides were OK but not great. So every time around the hook up end they would run almost twice as fast on the hook up track over the rest of the track. So I ran a very thin like 22 or 24 gauge wire to the other end with another lock-on, things improved. But I will need more hook up tracks to fix this or us better track. I have other types of track and new ones as well but this sat so long, I just wanted to make use of it if possible, since these are not so easy to buy in usable condition, especially the original ones..
I just watched this old August 26, 2020 video of your, and it really helped me out "getting off dead center" in establishing my little 5x8 layout. I really appreciated your suggestions on the grass and was so glad you showed how you made those track supports with 1x2's! What a simple and effective approach! I've been meaning to put an elevated track on my layout, and even tried the FastTrack Trestles, but I wasn't too thrilled with them because they really BLOCKED the view of the bottom layer because of their wide built in bed, and the bases of the supports were way too wide, and I had to do a lot of absurd "straddling" to get them to work. I gave up! Now I'm enthused again, thanks to your tips! 1x2's and regular STURDY good old fashion Lionel or Menard's Tubular track! Thanks again, and keep those videos coming!

Really great job at explaining the setup. I am resurrecting a set I had back in the late 1950's and 1960's. Looks like you have a number of trains and accessories I still have such as the Lackawana engine, the red/green signal house and a platform for milk cans. I just built my tables and am getting started. I have a considerable amount of the old post-war Lionel tubular track and will most likely order some of the Menards track for my initial setup. Zack, Layout is looking good and Expanding. Like my layouts you can only go one way when you run out of room. In my case I went up, and up and up. From flat to elevated to full ceiling loop. The ceiling loop is actually bigger than my main layout. What do you think you will do when it’s time to expand. And you know you will! It happens to all of us, regards Conductor John MTH

I still do not have my layout set up but there are a few things for sure like 12x12 L-Shape Design, a Second lot more and lots of postwar Action. Thanks for all the great tips. I really like your approach. As someone who is starting out, the K.I.S.S. principle and budget plays a big part. I also like postwar era style and power. I like to add some pre-war accessories to keep the vintage look.
Very good video pretty nostalgic seeing a layout like this reminds me of a buddy’s layout that really got me into trains reminds me I need to give him a call sometime anyway When I had layout I was a ho scale modeler and I did focus a lot on realism but this shows you don’t have to have the best or super high budget or most realistic accurate layout to have fun or get started it reminds me of how we all started to enjoy the hobby and have fun and we all can do it in our own ways that’s what makes this hobby so great Also you definitely deserve more subs
Beautiful layouts! I use Gar Graves Track and for my raised sections I cut out luan ancored to my supports. When it's cut about 1/4 inch wider than the ties and road bed is installed it looks great and never moves no matter how heavy the equipment is running on it.

@@CountryBunkersTrains hi Zack..I'm the guy you met at Round House trains the other day. I've got a lot to say..I'll try to make it brief.. my thoughts are bouncing all over the place. I've been in N for 20 yrs.. This past year I tried HO.. I've wanted to go to O but, could never pull the trigger due to cost. I checked out the Mennards prices that you went with and yes.. Your entire layout came in under what my one loop 9.5' x 18' came in with Atlas. I considered the track you used on this layout using wooden ties between the steel plates which would have looked fine..but, I want to use O-54 switches and there is nothing tubular to make that happen. I may have to bite the bullet and pay the price for Atlas to achieve what I'm after. Realtrax doesn't have to sizes to fit the track plan I've come up with using anyrail on the computer. I don't care for the look of Fast track at all.. In any case it looks like I may pack away the N scale, tear down the one yr old three walled HO shelf layout and bite the bullet. That was the main reason I made the trek to Tony's on the weeked to see the O in operation again..and yup.. I got the bite for it once again.
GREAT VIDEO!!!!! Will probably sent you a note! I have 2 like 8x10 loops and a 3rd 3x8. I tried both an MTH 100 Brick and bought a 180 Lionel Powerhouse. And I can't run all three trains. I can't run the outside loop. The second I power it up it kicks the breaker. Again GREAT video!
Are you running both the 100 brick and 180 brick together? Or just one at a time? I am definitely at the limits of my 135w brick. I can get away with one passenger train and 2 freight trains sucking up power. Anything more and it pops the breaker. The MTH trains seem to suck up a little less power than my Lionel engines. If I throw my Lionel SD70ACE in the mix, it will overload the breaker with the 2 other trains running. I need to get another TIU and some power bricks for the 2nd layout.
@@CountryBunkersTrains No I'm running a single brick to fixed voltage 2 of the TIU to a terminal block. Only track is wired to that terminal block. Neither brick will run all three. Railking Triplex, GE Evolution, Centipede, 5 car passenger. I've been thinking of adding a second brick to voltage 1 and another terminal block. But i bet that gets into numbering the track 1 and 2. ......glad to see you using Menards track, the store is 5 min. from my house. In the fall I'll be like a kid in a candy store when they bring all their train stuff out. SO WISH I HAD ROOM TO ADD THAT REACTOR PLANT....THAT IS SO COOL. I want to add a ceiling run room is about 18' square no one will see the track and I thought Menards would be GREAT. JUST DON'T KNOW HOW TO POWER THAT MUCH TRACK????? Thanks ! Really interesting layout and use of space. Also liked simple trestle design and function. But no track support on all the elevated routes? Just random trestles? No track issues, sagging or separation under the weight of your trains?

For cleaning the track, I’ll use a yard stick or something similar to reach if needed. Sometimes I just have to get my big ole rear up on the table/s though..... Happy holidays!
Haha that is not “goofy postwar” track. That is a high end, prewar, 14” 072 straight track designed for the 1/4” scale model series...752E, 763E, 226E, etc.

Very impressive layout, I’m curious are those post war switches. Also I was curious if you’re gonna use some Menards buildings on your layout. Anyways I think you give an amazing job of explaining everything as far as the process you use in building your train layout.
Merry Christmas to you as well!! Adding that loop took about 3-4 days due to waiting on everything to arrive. The layouts together have been going on 3 years now. Still have a lot to do.
I run the MTH engine on both. The tubular is set up more like a postwar “toy like” layout, where as the other is more high rail in a sense. Both are command control equipped however.
The Only Crittics you need to worry is you other people don’t Like it they can go Away Elsewhere.I Like All Layouts don’t care who it is From.even watch Trainshows from other places.videos or goin live.
If I recall correctly, the legs for the supports are 6.75” tall. Overall height with the support on top of the legs is 7.75” (how high the track is above the table).
Hey Zack, what are you going to do when you run out of room. It happened to me, first I made a large layout then I built a elevated section then I went directly to my ceiling. The ceiling layout is bigger than my actual layout, it’s about 37’x26’. Have you thought about what you’re going to do when the time comes and believe me it will. Regards conductor john

instead of solidering to the track just take a flat blade screw driver in the underside of the rail and slip the wire in the gap remove screwdriver then solider it
We’ll get back to it soon. Once the other is finished. It’s dead in the water at the moment being used as a table for all the stuff off the other layout.

Nice! I prefer the “toy” aspect of Lionel trains myself too. One of the reasons my layout is very flat, is because as a kid, I played with them on the floor. Like every other kid probably started! If I wanted realism, I’d just go down the street and walk along the tracks!

Menards sells terrific tubular track, BUT the company doesn't ship to Canada; nuts!

Very impressive layout, I’m curious are those post war switches. Also I was curious if you’re gonna use some Menards buildings on your layout. Anyways I think you give an amazing job of explaining everything as far as the process you use in building your train layout.

I buy from a little of everywhere. I’ve purchased through eBay, local shop, and train world online. Menards has some good pricing on stuff as well!

The Menards track is pretty heavy duty and very budget friendly only question I have with it is will it last a long time
I had a good run with it before I sold it. Still seemed as sturdy when dismantling it, and sold it. Think it will hold up for a while.

Merry Christmas to you as well!! Adding that loop took about 3-4 days due to waiting on everything to arrive. The layouts together have been going on 3 years now. Still have a lot to do.

It’s your mth layout the newer tubular rail, or older solid rail?
I run the MTH engine on both. The tubular is set up more like a postwar “toy like” layout, where as the other is more high rail in a sense. Both are command control equipped however.
Can you share the dimensions of the tubular track layout? Love the design, curious if it would fit in my garage, thanks.

What is the overall height of your wooden supports Zack
If I recall correctly, the legs for the supports are 6.75” tall. Overall height with the support on top of the legs is 7.75” (how high the track is above the table).

Hey Zack, what are you going to do when you run out of room. It happened to me, first I made a large layout then I built a elevated section then I went directly to my ceiling. The ceiling layout is bigger than my actual layout, it’s about 37’x26’. Have you thought about what you’re going to do when the time comes and believe me it will. Regards conductor john

instead of solidering to the track just take a flat blade screw driver in the underside of the rail and slip the wire in the gap remove screwdriver then solider it
I am redoing my layout with Menards tubular track and it is really quiet
It is nice and quiet compared to the fastrack/realtrax!
Next trick is to paint the rails to that realistic Look.how bout it?

These are pretty simple/easy to make. If you have a saw and can use a tape measure, they can be made in short order. Happy New Year!

Nice! I prefer the “toy” aspect of Lionel trains myself too. One of the reasons my layout is very flat, is because as a kid, I played with them on the floor. Like every other kid probably started! If I wanted realism, I’d just go down the street and walk along the tracks!

Width varies depending on where they are being placed. Height of the legs is around 6.75” with a total height of around 7.75”.

Upgrade your track that garbage. I used that 40 years ago.
