  • If you've had to harvest your tomatoes a little early, here's the method we use to keep ripening those tomatoes (sometimes until December!). This is a great way to extend your tomato harvest. Fresh marinara in November? Yes please!
It is also a good way to handle an early frost in the garden (or just a short growing season).

Thank you, I was wondering about the fermenting of these and you answered my question. :) I had a wonderful time canning with my daughter-in-laws last week. We taste tested some tomatoes I was fermenting. "The lowly tomato has risen above all other fruit and vegetables!" Kristen declared!!!

Try pickled green tomatoes! Here in Arkansas those are a delicacy... Try them with fried fish or beans

I'm just starting new plants here in FL. I hope they don't go crazy like they did before, I had 15 foot tomato plants... ha it was quite funny. I only had a mix of black cow, peat and bag soil ( anything will grow in that ) because of the terrible soil here. I'm going to have to stop them from growing so high.
I hope you all stay warm and healthy. When you did the last video you were making chicken soup it sounded so good I made some too : )
I received my herbs and elderberries yesterday, time to get back to my class. I've got to watch it time and time again, so glad it's a lifetime class I will need a lifetime to learn .
    As always Ty

Like your vlog, I know its a lot of work but we wrap each tomato with news paper. This keeps them from touching so they don't spread anything that might have a disease or the like. That way by going through the tomatoes weekly, I find the bad ones leaving dtains on the paper, and even have had some last till February and once had some last til March. The small green ones i use once they ripen make salsas and other tomato mixes.

Put the greenest ones on the bottom..then the riper ones in top.. It's easier to check..

Apples also ripen other veggies because of the gases they emit as they ripen and rot...

I'm going to try this. I'm fermenting all my chili's could I have done this with them? I'm also in N. Idaho and this has ruined my chili's and my cherry tomatoes so I'm fermenting all to see what I get.

I use a 50 50 mix of water and 3% hydrogen peroxide on a cloth to wipe them off first. Not too wet, wrong it out. It helps keep bacteria at bay, and also, sometimes there could be worm eggs on the outside that can be removed. They're barely visible to the naked eye.

I did not hear and not was mentioned where to store this box of tomatoes until they ripen? On the floor in the house? A cold garage bench or floor? Please help as I will need to do this. My weather here went from 80 to 50 something in 1 day and has been cold and rainy ever since. All the tomatoes on the vine are green and flowering also to struggle to grow the tomatoes I should have gotten through the end of October like 2 years ago. :(

Every 18°F drop in open air temperature doubles storage time. This doesn't work for refrigerators. IMO, just use them when it nears 50. Disinfecting the fruit first helps, along with the container.

Back where we come from...we don't ripen green tomatoes, we soak them in buttermilk, dress them in cornmeal and fry them suckers up...

Thanks for the tip. I'll try it next year. Our tomato growing season is short here up north.
