One "tool" I keep in my shed for when I am using sprayers is a sheet of cardboard. If I am spraying in an area where I don't want to hit neighboring plants, I use the cardboard as a shied. It even works great with the lawn. I don't like grass growing up against my fence because the mower misses it and the string trimmer marks up the wood, so I place the cardboard about 2 inches from the fence and spray. I end up with a 2 inch No Plants Land around my fence line that goes unnoticed because the grass hides it.
All that said, I don't spray much in my yard. Maybe twice a year if I have to.

I've used a mixture of vinager and salt as a weed killer spray and it works and is safe for the birds, lizards, turtles and frogs around my home.
