- Are you or someone you love expecting a new baby? Today I'm sharing with you my favourite DIY to make for new babies. I love giving these Crinkle Taggy Toys as baby shower gifts or gifts once a new baby is born. These Crinkle Blankets are so easy to make and you can use scrap fabrics, scrap ribbons and even create the crinkle noise with a special recycling tip - you'll have to watch to see!
Baby's love the sensory stimulation that comes from these Baby Paper Tag Toys. They have high contrast colours, different textures and make a fun sound. Once a baby is around 8-12 weeks old they're starting to try to grasp and this is a perfect first toy to give them to practice that skill. You're going to love this one!
Let's get making!

Welcome to My Mum Makes! I’ve started this channel as a creative outlet to share my sewing projects online. I have watched several tutorials and you are the only person who said, the toy is washable. Thanks😊
No worries! It certainly needs to be washable I think with baby slobber. I'm glad it was helpful to mention
Great idea to use the cereal packaging, I need to try that. I read somewhere that these toys can be a bit of a suffocation hazard (no problem when only used supervised), so what I do is I cut a bunch of holes into the plastic and do a "breathing test". Just a little tip to be extra safe.
Have a great day! I enjoy your videos a lot.
Yes very true, you don't want them to get it stuck on their face. Thanks for the safety tip
What an awesome idea! Thank you! Sewing community is amazing! I was wanting to make these .. new grandma here soon. Exciting 🥰
Congrats on becoming a new grandma! I hope you have fun making these for your grandchild 💕
I make reborn art dolls and I always like to send them home with a box opening with lots of gifts for the new baby! And as their handmade dolls I like to stick to handmade things to send with them ♥️ these are perfect. THANKS SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! ♥️♥️♥️🇨🇦
That's a fun idea! I had to look up what a reborn art doll was and my golly they're impressively realistic!!! I'm glad this video was helpful for you
I love how clear your instructions are! I have seen some others making tag toys, and I was a bit confused, they were too big too
I can't wait to try these for friends' newborn triplets.
Thank you 😊
Just made two of these for my new nephew, great design. I customized one with a couple pieces of wide velcro sewn inside for the crunchy part on one corner, and part of a shirt with a pocket on it for the opposite corner.
Sounds great! They sound like very creative ideas. I hope your new nephew enjoys them
Made a nursing pillow and baby blanket for my cousin. Had a lot of large scrap material from each. Thank you, this was such a helpful video. I Loved it, was fun to make and it really tied the two pieces together. (The baby blanket was supposed to be another cover with a different theme but it was too short to get a full pattern out so I turned it into a fluffy blanket. It really didn’t match the cover at that point.)
You're so welcome! I'm glad this video helped you with your gift for your cousin! They're a lot of fun to make.
Brilliant video thanks so much, short, concise, and so informative. I especially love the tip on using the plastic from the cereal box and using a larger piece of material when sewing it together ⭐️ 💕
I'm so glad they were helpful tips! I hope you enjoy having a go at making it . Thanks again for such a lovely comment
New mum here. I'm much more of a knitter/crocheter. Not so amazing at sewing but can straight stitch and plan on making some of these for my little one 😊😊
Congrats on being a new mum! Yes these are a great easy make. Do you have a favourite thing to crochet or knit?
Just what I have been looking for, my 2nd great son arrives in September the crinkle toy is great, thank youx
Congratulations for the upcoming arrival in September! I'm glad you long the crinkle toy
Going to make for my 4th granddaughter that’s coming in Aug👏👏
Ohhhh congratulations!!! That's very exciting. They really do make a great present
Thanks for the video. I can't wait to make one. I ordered some teething rings and thought I'd loop one of the ribbons around it. I also ordered the crinkle paper so I can't get started on my toy today but can't wait to make one for my grandson.
Great idea to use a teething ring!! Probably do a few extra rows of stitching on that ribbon to make sure it's strong. I'd love to see a photo of how it turns out. 💕 Thanks for commenting!
@@MyMumMakes I ended up attaching both a teething ring and a ring that can be used to attach the toy to a stroller. I would show you a picture but I don't know how to attach one to a comment.
@@asheryl1966 that sounds perfect, well done! I'd love to see a photo on Instagram (@mymummakes.marie) or Facebook (My Mum Makes) if you have either. It would be great if you could send it over TH-cam but that's not an option at the moment
@@MyMumMakes I think I sent it to your instagram.
love making these! i just made some that are also pillows, thx for the tutorial!
Thanks for sharing this video. These are cute taggy toys. I’m afraid to sew around the pins, you made it look so easy.
If they're in this direction, even if your needle hits the pin it will just slide off it usually. Just take it slowly and it isn't as hard as it seems. 💕 Thanks for commenting!
I just NOW watched your video and I am going to give it a try since I am a beginner level. I have two quick questions to ask you if you don’t mind?
1) For my clarification, did you say that these taffy toys are NOT machine washable?
2) I was wondering if it is okay/safe to use a dryer sheet instead of cereal plastic bags?
I have used dryer sheets (after it was taken out of the dryer) for homemade dog and cat toys.
Thank you for your time and sharing❣️
It's perfect for a beginner so I hope you enjoy making it.
It is machine washable as long as it's on a cold wash, not hot water. You can't dry them in a dryer though, just air dry.
I've never used dryer sheets before but I imagine they would be suitable. Not sure how they go in the wash though? If you do it you'll have to come back and let us know if it works
Thanks for sharing.
I made this today! It’s soooo cute! Thank you for your video.
My pleasure!
Wonderful! Have a blessed weekend everyone.
Thanks you too
@@MyMumMakes My daughter and her husband are expecting their first baby soon. This is just right!
Congratulations to them and to you too! I'm glad it was a helpful video for you
I love all your makes and I'm finally getting time to make a few. Do you wash your ribbon material first before adding them to the taggy toy? I'm concerned about the dyes coming off in my Grandbabies mouth. 😮
These seem so simple! I can't wait to make some for my baby. Thank you.
Yes they're a really fun, simple make and easy to customise too. Thanks for commenting!
Great, thank you!!
Beautiful and well made taggy blankets, thank you! If I may suggest to slow the speed when you show them so we can see them better. 🌸🌸
Thanks for the feedback - yep can do. Hopefully you are still able to follow it even if it was a bit too fast
Oh yes, we still can. You’re a great teacher. But I’m sure other people don’t mind. Thanks for answering and keep on doing tutorials! 🌸🌸
@@marietteforget7804 I really do appreciate you connecting. I'm currently working on s car seat cover video so that will be coming out in just over a week.
@@MyMumMakes thanks ! And wow, what a cool project! I have just subscribed to your tutorials! Have a great day! 🌸🌸
Thanks for subscribing!! ❤️
Hi Mum, hope this message finds you and your family well. I just have a question, the plastic or the cereal packages you use, do they dry completely when you wash them and not put in the dryer? cause i was thinking that if they do not dry completely they might grow mold inside. Have you tried putting them in the dryer?
Hi!
We don't have an electric dryer at home, we air dry everything in the sun and it dries fine. I wouldn't put it in a dryer if you do have one because it would melt the plastic
My cousin and I are both pregnant, she is due just under 2 months before me, and we are both having girls so will make double of these haha 1 for me and 1 for her baby shower gifts
Sounds perfect! Great idea
Love these taggies great tutorial
Thanks! I'm glad you like it
Thanks alot for sharing this.
My pleasure
Great idea and video! Can these be washed and dried? Or flat dry best? Thank you
I'm glad you liked it! Yes they can be washed in a washing machine but air dry only. Hope you have a go at them - they're a fun make!
@@MyMumMakes thank you so much! I made 2 .. so fun 🤩 so cute 🥰 I can’t wait to see our new little bundle of joy.
Ohhhh congrats! When are you due? Sewing little baby stuff is the best form of nesting 💕💕💕
Made it. Loved it. Thank much
You're very welcome!
I love this video. Great explanation. Thanks for this tutorial.
You're very welcome!
que material puedo poner que haga ruido a este juguete del bebé, que yo pueda ponerlo en la lavadora y secadora
Try parchment paper. The kind you use for baking. 😊
Love this! Had to subscribe!😊TFS!
Where did you get the elephants t fabric my son has a blanket similar I wanna remake
It's lovely, but unfortunately the fabric is discontinued :( it was from our local Spotlight shop 3 years ago but I've since looked for more and haven't found it. Sorry about that
Just tagged you on Instagram with the one I just did. Thank you for the easy instructions! Def need more practise but I’m happy with how it turned out!
Oh yay I'm so glad you found it helpful. It hasn't shown up on Instagram for me yet but hopefully it will do I can see! Just checking you tagged @mymummakes.marie
Thanks for commenting. It's always encouraging to read
@@MyMumMakes yup the tag is right 🤔
@@ScotiaGirl902 ok good. Maybe something odd on my end. I'll try to work it out. Glad you let me know!
Super cute I got to try this
Excellent, I'd love to see a picture once you do 😊
What fabrics do you use most for these ~ Thank you!
I use mink on one side and satin on the other side so they're two interesting textures for the babies to touch. Then there is also a later of polar fleece inside to make it extra soft.
What material did you use that you attached the tags to?
I've used a Minky fabric because I like the feel of it and think the texture is interesting for babies to feel. You can use anything though
What type of fabric is the polka dot fabric? And what did you mean by high contrast fabric on one side? Also, what else can be used in the middle than the polar fleece?
The polka dot fabric is satin just to give it a different texture.
High contrast means that there is a big contrast between the black and white colours on the satin side which is good for babies because they haven't developed the ability to see heaps of details yet.
You don't have to use any fabric on the inside if you don't want. But you could always use flannelette or any other soft fabric if you do have to have a soft layer inside.
Hope that helps!
@@MyMumMakes thank you so much!!!!! That was very helpful!
@@jeniferalvarez2914 excellent, I'm glad to have helped. Happy sewing!
what ribbon do you use?
I don't use any ribbon in particular. I use satin, cotton, anything really.
How would I go about making a cube with the crinkle paper?
Great question! I'd sew the crinkle paper to each of 6 squares, sew the sides to each other to create a cube leaving one side open, stuff it with filling and hand sew up the hole. Hard to explain but a good idea
@@MyMumMakes thank you so much! ❤️
Great video, keep up the good work and great tutorials!!!!!!!
Thanks Sophie, I'm so glad you're enjoying them
@@MyMumMakes I actually have a sewing and crafts channel: th-cam.com/channels/AHNWewspBrLWU6Tp6RRpOg.html
I have a brand new universal 90/14 needle in and still struggling a bit. Would you recommend a different needle?
That's what I've used with mine - Schmetz branded needles I find to be the best. In what way are you struggling and I'll try to problem solve with you how we can fix it?
@@MyMumMakes with the extra thickness I find I'm breaking needles 🤷🏼♀️
@@leannewilliams6166 could you try a jeans needle? They're good with thick fabrics and lots of layers
@@MyMumMakes thanks, I'll try that! Also thought maybe I should increase tension in thicker sections.
@@leannewilliams6166 worth a try. I hope you find a way to work it out
How loud is it supposed to be? I used one sheet of the cereal bag and I hole punched a bunch of holes into it bug the final product came out not as loud as I expected
Great question. I did find that different cereal packets had slightly different noise levels depending how thick they were. Corn flakes have been good ones for me but you might just want to keep listening to your cereal packets (lol) and see if you can find what is a noisy one for you. They aren't extremely loud though and the crinkle paper you can buy is definitely louder. But the cereal box packet is good enough that it's audible
@@MyMumMakes I ended up adding a second layer and it made a louder noise and I was satisfied with that
Excellent, I'm glad you found a solution
It made a really nice baby shower gift.
Good morning I'm not much of a sore myself and I think these make great gifts just wondering what would you charge for one
Great question. I have previously sold these for $15 on Etsy but there are some cheaper and some more expensive on there
Will I have the new grandbaby coming in March and I showed this to my daughter and a friend of hers thought but she wants to buy her from me but I'm not too sure how big your squares are and they're amazing like your stuff is amazing I really like the stuff that you've made so would you be able to tell me how big your fabric squares are
@@lorieadrian4412 congrats on your grandbaby coming soon!! I'm glad you like my projects. You can make them any size but these ones if mine are squares that are about 20cm or 8 inch
Well thank you so much for your help and advice I will have to try and remember to take a picture and send it to you, plus now I want to make my 3 year old grand baby and set of the bean bags you did for Christmas 😆 lol I think he will love them 😊
Yes definitely send me a photo! I would love to see
How does the crinkle material in the middle, not get wet in the washing machine?
Yes it gets wet but then dries when you flat dry it
👍
The video is really nice. Can you show the stitching little slowly to understand easy.
Hi, what type of fabrics did you used?
Hi! You can use anything really but I used a satin on the back, Minky on the front and polar fleece in the middle
What kind of fabric did you use
I use Minky fabric on one side to give a fluffy texture for them to feel and then satin on the other side to be a contrasting texture. But you can really use anything or just scraps you have around
Any suggestions on why when I sew my plastic ends up just falling off, the needle is basically just cutting it and it doesn’t get sewn along with the fabric. 😅 new sewer here. lol
Hi there!
Could you try lengthening your stitches or sewing a bit further away from the edge and see if that makes it a bit stronger on the plastic? You can always send me a video of what you mean on Instagram private messages if you need more help

Books are always winner. This looks like a good idea too! :)

Suitable for once they can start intentionally grasping so some time from 3 months
@@MyMumMakes thank you!
Where did you purchase your crinkle material? The link is not working. Thank you
Oh sorry the link isn't working. It looks like it's working from my end so that's odd.
It's "crinkle material from tomni designs". Hopefully googling that will take you to the right spot.
Buy a roll of florists cellophane. It doesn’t disintegrate when wet like gift cello.
Oh great advice! Thanks for that, I didn't realise that was an actual thing but sounds perfect.
Oh, it's "Weet-Bix". No "A" in the middle? When I hear it mentioned in British shows I always thought it was Wheatabix.
It certainly would make more sense if it was spelt like wheat! I'd never thought about Weetbix not being intentionally known!!
Weetabix is the UK version! Here in Aus we have Weet-Bix but they are basically the same thing from what I understand.
@@flutterby345 oh interesting! I didn't realise it would be different

Oh how exciting! Congratulations to you with having a new sibling on the way
Hi, what is the fleece part of this? I didn't quite hear what you said?
Hi Chloe!
No worries - the inside is polar fleece, and the outside layers I used a minky fabric and a satin. But you can use any types of fabric for this project or even just use scraps
@@MyMumMakes thank you very much!
please slow your video down, your taggy is wonderful but you go through all the steps way to fast for me to carefully watch how to do them.
