When I said "experimenting essentially means failure", it was not meant to discredit experimental bands (I consider The Ocean to be such a band as well). My point was that experimenting merely for the sake of experimenting, and not for the sake of creating deep, intense music, is missing the point. Experimenting must be a means to writing and "finding" new music that is somewhere out there, but not an end in itself.
Dude, in all seriousness: This is the one drummer that does not need samples. I'm telling you this as The Ocean's plus Coilguns, Kunz, etc. live sound-engineer, all of which are bands that Luc has played drums for. He is without doubt the most consistent drummer out there - And probably the only one where I have to turn the double-bass parts down, because he actually KICKS HARDER doing double-bass. If there are samples that sound like this, then they were sampled after him. Hail rock'n'roll.
Wow just got into your band, and my god you guys have impressed me in a way that very few bands have in the past. Straight after watching this and listening the songs metalblade posted from this album I brought a shirt, I will buy the album as soon as I can, thanks so much for being awesome
The coolest group of musicians in the Metal world. When I met Robin and Mike (ex-vocalist), we didn't waste time talking about music, we just talked about food and beer.
Super late to the party but on the bright side I have had so much discography to listen to. Found the ocean through a bass tab channel where I learned Silurian but it took me embarrassingly long to actually listen to the music. Man I love this band so much atmosphere so much groove really cool concept albums I mean what more do you want. Despite being a bassist I’ll admit drummers kind of carry bands and y’all’s grooves are so sick and complex but super tight and don’t overpower the rest of the instruments. Fucking awesome
I also got the sense he wasn't really saying that the actual act of experimenting is failure, but right after he said that, he also said "90% of the time you fail because its not new. But there is the 10% [that works]" So i got that he was saying that if you experiment, be prepared for failure. Not that experimenting really is failure in its self.
I'd suggest getting in contact with the engineer/producer that recorded the drums and the person who mixed the drums. And you could email them or message their facebook page asking the drummer what snare was used.
It probably isn't sampled and is just a coincidence, but to me (with my experience of using Toontrack for the past 6 years), that ride sounds exactly like a sampled one from Metal Foundry. The toms sound a lot like some you get in the SSD samples. I haven't quite placed the others. Its likely a coincidence, but they sound a lot like ones I've used before. With the non-ideal conditions they show in this video, it's possible they sampled.
Using samples isn't the sign of a bad drummer in the least, but for my taste it just makes stuff sound all a bit too similar. Like I said, it's probably just a coincidence and it's not sampled, but some of those hits sounded very similar to samples I use when I record for funsies, it's not an attack at his skill at all.
Having recorded drums and been part of album mixing processes, it pains me to read this. You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. On the The Wish In Dreams, you can HEAR the drums be played. Snare ghost notes, wide-open cymbal sounds, etc. It DOES NOT sound sampled.
And that, a lot of times, means that experiments will go wrong --and that's OK, as long as you keep your sense of judgement with regards to what actually sounds good, and what does not, and don't fall into the elitist avantgarde trap where noone gets your point any longer...

"Now can I just please listen to the last Red Fang record instead?" HAHA, nice.
Robin, you've got some amazing riffs, truly inspiring stuff!
This era of the band with Luc Hess is the best IMHO. He brought such a baller depth to the bands sound.
We can assure you that there are no drum samples on this album.
Metal Blade Records when is the next the ocean album is coming out pelagial is clearly my favorite album of all time
does drum samples also mean triggers?

Could anyone give me some intel on the snare? I'm curious what snare it is, what samples have been used and eq, comp, because it sounds perfect.
simply brilliant! music became even deeper for me after this video!

I am in awe, what an amazing concept!

Most underrated band ever! Love u guys!
It's a good old Ludwig Black Beauty.

You guys achieve top world drum sound on that album
Oh shit, Chris is on the album?

Best album 2013!

What is his drum? I couldn't see clear
you should come to south america!
Seeing them tonight with Shining!!! Fuck yes
Haha! The toilet mic really captures the spirit that comes from below!
This kinda stuff happens all the time, cant tell you how many riffs i've "written" that I later found out already existed...

"Well, uhhm, can I please just listen to the last red fang record?"
I will but only because Pelagial is not released yet :p

The Ocean rules...
are they german? :D
So what kind of food and beer do these guys like?
I don't fully agree with what he said at the end. Experimenting is not failure it's trying something new for the greater good.
The drums sound sampled :I
1:31 I spy ATH-M50's!
These guys remind me of btbam, not musically but artistically
I miss Luke Hess...fukin amazing drummer..what a waste...((
yeah, he is just incredible!
Go listen to Coilguns if you haven't already. Luc, Jona and Luke kick some serious ass. And luke is still incredible.
And the ocean is.............?
