A Sidd this whole thing is amazing because Colin Quinn plays nice, but, if you’ve ever heard him on O&A he loves cringe mean humor. This whole episode was set up because at the time every comedian hated Dat for being a generic hack but being a huge draw at the time so Patrice and Vos just wanted an opportunity to shit all over him. Dat wasn’t aware he was just there to be the punching bag so he walked in blind to a an absolute beating all because Quinn wanted to see two of his friends tear into a hack comedian. Colin played the straight mentor type to save face and make it look like it wasn’t set up just to make fun of dat. I’m a comedian in LA and I’ve talked to Dat about this like 40 times.

I was never a huge fan of Colin's standup, but he was a genius on his show. I was too young to watch it live, but allowing himself to be the butt of jokes as a host is missing in both modern and old TV to this day...
Vos was great on this show, he was the toughest. He took the most of the jabs and could laugh and talk his way back. I thought Dat going French at the end was hilarious.
Honestly, Dat was a good sport about it all and it ended perfectly with him going French and Patrice giving a genuine standing ovation. He got killed but made his way back at the end good for him.
I had to come watch this after hearing a story on Bobby Kellys podcast about how Patrice and Rich absolutely destroyed Dat Phans whole soul on a Tough Crowd episode. This gonna be good.
Patrice already knew the future of Dat’s career. Flash in the pan and that’s why we still know of Patrice & most haven’t even heard of Dat. These vets just roasted him, but I mean come on you can’t use the same gimmick with veterans like these. No comedy humor just using the same voice every 5 min
Dat Phan currently does bringer and pay to preform open mics in LA. He headlines bars and low comedy clubs doing literally the same jokes from last comic but with a guitar now. I’ve been at shows with him where the audience shouts the punchlines after the first line of the joke. He’s the worst comedian alive

A lot of fantastic, well established comedians would show up and a TON of them absolutely couldn't do it. A lot of them really need time to work on their material and aren't as good coming up with things on the spot. I don't think that makes them a bad comedian, even if it makes them HORRIBLE at certain kinds of comedy. If you're paying to see a comedian in a club you want rehearsed humor that works with mass appeal, or is very specifically crafted for the audience in house. There are only a handful of names in comedy that can show up on stage without prepared material and make it work.
Steve from Yellowstone we will never see a talent like O'Neil again...he even made his small bits in the office scene stealers. ..dude had the most apt ability to spot another comics weakness...Jim Norton is a close second but Pat was the best ever.
Dat Phan had skipped a few rungs in comedy, and a gimmick is a way to do that so the rest of the comics wanted to know if had anything more. I don't know Dat Phan realized just how much hate there is the comedy world for cutting in line. But everything they criticized Dat Phan for, each of them leaned heavily on early and throughout their careers (ethnic identity and jokes about their own kind). Can you imagine Colin without Irish jokes or Patrice without black jokes or Vos with jokes? But they each developed a larger playbook for making folks laugh, and Dat Phan just wasn't there yet in his experience level. Is he a bad comic? Hell no. Did he deserve that seat on Tough Crowd? Also hell no. But what's he supposed to do, turn it down to gain the respect of comics at the expense of gaining the attention of bookers? He's a player, it's a game, and they're hating him for that. theres a difference between making jokes about your own race and using the same unfunny Vietnamese accent at the punchline of every joke. Take away dat phans impressions and he's done. Take away patrice's black jokes and you still have a good comic.

colin is a real psychopath. he's deceivingly mean, but nobody seems to notice. having dat on the show to begin with was a big setup by colin. then if you pay attention to colin and everything he says and does towards dat is meant to destroy dude. patrice even stepped in to keep dat from naming the producer of the show he was working towards. colin wanted to make dat name the producer and kill any chance of the show moving forward
Imagine if they did this 2day, every single 1 of them would b cancelled. It’s fucking comedy I hate how soft this country is becoming. Context is everything.
