Jerry West couldn't live to see the Celtics win another title. True Lakers legend.
Massive W
Actually, he was very close to Joe Mazzulla and probably rooting for him. Mazzulla was a teammate at West Virginia University with Jonnie West (Jerry's son), and is stil close friends with Jonnie to this day. I'd say Jerry West and Joe Mazzulla were very close too.
JW quote: "Paul Revere should have slept in and let Boston burn to the ground"...Go Mavericks!
That's fantastic.
I said the same thing to my Cousin a Celtic fan !
First Bill Walton and now Jerry West. RIP, Jerry... you were a gem. :-( o
Kareem is next. By July 4th mark my words
As a Dubs fan, I’m forever thankful that this man kept the Splash Bros together. This man had one of the greatest all around lives in basketball history. RIP Logo/Legend! ❤ ❤
In addition to helping the Grizzlies reach their first 50 win season in 17 years, he also had his handprints on the Clippers team that reached the Western Conference Finals for the first time in their franchise history. Every team he touched, something noteworthy happened for that franchise. RIP Jerry.
You have to be well in to your 30s-40s to even comprehend what Jerry West did for The NBA, his executive career alone speaks for itself. I'll never forget the tears that man shed when Kobe died in 2020.
You misspelled 50’’s tbh. Dude had the most important NBA career literally ever.
@Shadowguy You SPEAK FACTS Sir💯
I remember the Knicks-Lakers finals still. Greatness!😊
Even if I weren't a lifelong Lakers fan whose parents saw Jerry play in person numerous times, I would be sorry to hear about the passing of Jerry West. He is a giant in the story of the NBA and beyond that, seemed to be a genuinely kind and good person. Seeing him in tears talking about Kobe after his passing and seeing how much Kobe meant to him, showed what a big heart Jerry had. The game has lost a true legend.
Absolute legend. 1st class. Like the Don Draper of the NBA. Makes me proud to be an American.
Hearing him speak in that half swallowed West-by-God-Virginia that he never lost always reminded me of my Grandfather. RIP
Heard the devastating news this morning that we lost "Mr Clutch". I along with Lakers Nation and the entire NBA family is hurting today as West represented the very soul of the NBA. Whether it was his amazing career at PG or his equally incredible career as the greatest GM in NBA history. The league mourns and I salute a man I had tremendous respect and reverence for.
Long live the logo in NBA memory. Such class. Finals MVP on a losing team.
Sad they couldn’t honor him in Boston. They have MASSIVE RESPECT for Jerry.
Jerry West was my favorite player growing up, My Dad took me to a Sonics Laker game when I was 14 and we had tickets right behind the Laker's bench. Wilt, Goodrich, West, Hairston, Riley, Erickson, McMillan. that was my team and Jerry was the man.
33 straight!
A pure legend. Without him the Lakers would not be the Lakers we know. A gracious and intelligent man. Rest in peace
A West Virginia legend
Rich mentioned that JW won the NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player award in 1959, but didn't mention that this was also in a losing effort, as was his 1969 NBA Finals MVP. That's just incredible and unheard of.
I discovered the Lakers/nba in 1972 when the Jerry/Wilt/Riles and so much more beat the Knicks in the finals. I became a die hard Lakers fan, then at 16. No matter what Jerry did or where he went, he was always first a gentleman. Though I remember him saying that the '85 ring was his favorite, because it was against Boston. Rest in peace, Jerry.
A fitting and heartfelt remembrance of one of an NBA great. A life well done Jerry West and a job well done Rich Eisen. Hat’s off to the two of you.
West Virginia greatest will be missed but never forgotten
Im 66 years old. I watched Jerry West maybe towards the end of his career.
For those GENZ or GENX kids that never got to see him.
Turn on your NBA2k , pull up the Legends. That was Jerry West.
He led the Lakers in scoring, what, 14 years on a row?
He built the Showtime Lakers .
Hes the Gd damn Logo!!
I'm 65 and had his poster on my wall for a couple years.
He is the ONLY player from the LOSING team to be named MVP of the NBA Finals!!!
Like THAT is going to happen again.....
There should be a statue of him in both LA and the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
Rich, you do such a fantastic job when moments like this of sports and life come together. It’s appreciated, thank you. Well said.
I appreciate Rich's honesty. Class act and was the NBA for so many people. RIP legend.
As a Celtics fan since 1960, I have watched 10 finals featuring my Celtics and the Lakers. Nobody scared me like Jerry West--not Elgin, not Wilt, not Kareem, not Magic, not Kobe. Against arguably the greatest dynasty in sports history, he averaged (on 48% shooting): 31.1, 29.5, 33.8, 33.9, 31.3, and 37.9. As a point of comparison, MJ's finals scoring averages (also on 48% shooting) were: 31.2, 35.8, 41.0, 27.3, 32.3, and 33.5. Jordan averaged 33.5 in those six finals, West 32.9.
One of the best. He will be missed dearly. RIP Mr. West
Rich, Jerry was one of the all time greats! RIP #44! The Logo! Mr Clutch!
Laker fan my whole life, I knew and went to school with Jerry son and went to their house from time to time. It was so sad to see him spend the last 15-20 years hating the Lakers and trying to do what he could to knock them off. RIH to the logo, I know you bleed purple and gold!!
He never hated the Lakers : he hated the Buss children and how they treated him and his wife….it’s DISGRACEFUL how Jeannie and Co. have been towards him 😡
Dub fan says thanks!
RIP Jerry West! Nothing short of legendary! Jerry West Was the NBA and the Lakers of the 60’s-80’s. He was a remarkable man who accomplished so much professionally.
Thank goodness the Celtics Dynasty led by Bill Russell ended in '69. It's no coincidence that players like West and Robertson, among other All-Time greats, finally won a Chip after being shut out throughout the decade of the '60's as the Celts won the Chip every year except for the '66-'67 season when Wilt beat Russell and the Celts in the ECF before defeating the San Francisco Warriors for the Title. Jerry finally got his ring in the magical '71-'72 season which included the Lakers 33 game winning streak in the Regular Season.
I was lucky enough as a Teen to attend the '71-'72 All-Star game at the Fabulous Forum and see West take over the game late and lead the West All-Stars to the win. Jerry dominated the 4th qtr of that game on both ends of the court. I still have the program from that game.
RIP Mr. Clutch. RIP.
RIP Sir and thank you- my love of basketball was cemented by watching highlights of you. one of the LEGENDS of the sport.
My idol as a kid learning basketball. First sports poster in my room. Wanted to be like him. Helped me love the game. Huge part of my childhood. You will be missed RIP Mr. Clutch
great tribute, rich. thanks for sharing.
Jerry West is personally responsible for the Lakers and Warrior dynasties. The greatest executive in the history of the NBA. He also played a part in mentoring Pat Riley and elevating him to the head coaching position of the Lakers. The history of the NBA would not be the same without him.
It’s ironic that Jerry West will be remembered today at a Celtics game a team that he hated and would not ever go to the Boston Garden because of the Celtics domination of his Lakers. Jerry West Hall of Fame player, Hall of Fame human being RIP. Tom Bush
The NBA all-time team of the 1960s Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Elgin Baylor, Oscar Robertson, and Jerry West.
And that team could beat any alltime team from any other decade.
I would say Sam Jones deserves a mention...
With all the deserved accolades he earned throughout his career, what I valued the most about Jerry was his honesty, his competitiveness and the quiet honor and dignity with which he carried himself. He was a samurai who fought and lived with grace. Biggest mistake the Lakers ever made was allowing #44 to walk out the door.
Hate the Lakers, love Jerry West. Rest in Peace, Legend.
Same
I had the chance to interview Mr. West many years ago (but after his playing days). He was, as ever, the hard-nosed competitor, but he was a GENTLEMAN, elegant and well-spoken. I've interviewed many sports figures from the 1950-70s, and DiMaggio is probably the only one I'd put in Mr West's class. And I still and will always think of him as "Mr West" despite our being the same age! Via con Dios, my brother!
❤️ jerry west very very sad day , jerry west my hero forever
I remember watching the great Jerry West growing up in the 60s and 70s. What a life! Thanks Rich. Maybe he can straighten out The W from heaven. That would be a final accomplishment . 🏀❤️
RIP Jerry, You were and are a man of quality and high standards. Thanks for all you did for the Lakers, The players and us, the fans!! God Bless.
One of the greatest players and G.M. of all-time. Legend!
Jerry was the greatest. It is a reminder of how bad the NBA is now.
West Virginia is in mourning. He was our STAR.
LA Lakers still have the longest winning streak in NBA history. 33 games in a row.
An All-time great player.
AND one of the greatest (and very underrated) GM’s.
This term "underrated" is used in the wrong context so often that it's painful.
How is the KNOWN... GOLD STANDARD for GMs in the post-Auerbach era "underrated"???
@@TheEsquireOfSports In many parts of the country, he was rarely mentioned, nor was he given credit.
Sad day for NBA fans especially for Laker fans. The godfather of basketball in LA. Damn feels like I lost my grandpa. Rest in paradise Mr. Clutch
“Father Time is undefeated.” Stay safe everyone! 😢
Huh?
A Legend.... Amazing Man....
RIP to a legend. Modern fans have to understand about Jerry West as a player, he was the most complete guard offensively and defensively before Jordan. He went to 9 NBA Finals, had more 35+ point games in the Finals than anybody else, 5th all time in playoffs ppg at 29 PPG, averaged 27/6/7 without a 3pt shot, and of course was arguably the greatest executive in NBA history.
He was not scared to make a big move as a GM, trading an all star center for a 17 year old guard out of high school was considered asinine. Then they get Shaq and even then it was questioned and believed that they could’ve gotten more for Divac (they probably could’ve)
Legendary in hindsight but it was insane, RIP logo.
There was talk about the NBA updating the Logo.
I guess thats been settled
No….Let the Logo stay.
The man epitomized Basketball not just for LA, but America.
Jerry was magnificent!!!🎉🎉
He was such a brilliant mind
There will never be another like him 😩
RIP The Logo 😢
Wow! He will be missed! A real neat man. Lived a long life but there will be a void. Condolences to the family. 😔😪
You did great, Rich
Elgin Baylor actually brought the Lakers west. He saved them in 59' by upsetting the Hawks to get to the finals. They were on the brink of bankruptcy.
RIP Jerry. He passed on the day of a finals game legend.
Mr West passed away before the Celtics passed the Lakers all time championships.
Go MAVS.
When you're "The Logo" of the NBA...✌️❤️
Lets go mountaineers ❤
The same week he was on the cover of SI and Sport.
Rip Jerome Alan West, you will be missed
On the Mt Rushmore of SG's, Executives and Lakers....
Remember Magic talking about how West would let him sit in on meetings before practice in a full suit taking notes. He wanted players to know the business side of the game
What did Kareem say to Jerry West in reply to his comments?
"I've been hearing that crap ever since I was at UCLA. I'm out there busting my buns every night! Tell your old man to drag Walton and Lanier up and down the court for 48 minutes!"
pure gold
Go Lakers!
RIP, Mr. Clutch. Nobody has represented the state of West Virginia better than The Logo himself.
Jerry West and Elgin Baylor on a fast break was 2 points in the bank!
❤Class MAN Player Coach GM
Jeanie buss revoked wests lifetime season seats less than 2 years ago. Man got 🤬 on before passing
You can be a super star, an all star, even a legend, but can you be a logo?
Jerry could.
😢
One of those plumbers that JJ Redick referred to.
Mj had a greater impact obviously magic had big one too but jerry west was the guy for the nba before magic and mj and he is top 2 for me impact wise on the nba behind mj
Celtics going up 2-0 gave him stress & war flashbacks from 60’s-70’s, look what you caused Dallas coaching staff 💔🙏
Shame that the Clippers broke the news. The Lakers did him wrong.
Addendum: I still think the 71-72 Lakers are the best team EVER!
I wore 44 for many years
When you have a nickname The Logo you know you had your legacy made. RIP
MR. CLUTCH
Jerry west a legend in ohio too
Finally, a conversation about a truly great human and basketball player. I’m so sick and tired of talking about Caitlyn Clark. Please let’s move on from her and get back to reality. 😊
For me, if we count him as a shooting guard, he is the 2nd best shooting guard behind MJ
I respect it, even though I don’t agree at all. It’s clearly Kobe to me. However, Jerry’s definitely third, and anyone who puts Wade over him is insane or just doesn’t understand just how great he was.
@@jerodgraham6623 you have to understand era context...jerry west played in a smaller league team wise talent wise with no foreign guys with worse athletes and defenders and shooters and he could sleep on defense in his era and the truth is he played with baylor wilt hairston goodrich his whole career...if wade had prime lebron bosh and shaq his whole career we would look at him like mj...wade could lock up west and kill him on the boards get more assists score more and expose him on defense...
Just watch a certain part of society lobbying to change the logo to a more pigmentaly acceptable one and the NBA will follow suit. They'll probably say that they're retiring his logo like teams retire jerseys. RIP oh great one.
contrary to popular belief bill russell was not the biggest star of that era that young kids playing growing up wanted to be like outside of the very few tall freaks like kareem..we had mikan and sorta cousy pettit then we had wilt who was huge as well and baylor less so a little bit of bill russell and sam jones but jerry west was the player kids modeled their game off of like mj magic kobe lebron curry...the guards of the early to mid to late 70's all were good because they watched jerry west....gail goodrich at his peak for example was literally jerry west jr...
Jerry one time commented on all the young players who call themselves dogs. Like I’m a dog on the court. Jerry said I was a wolf, wolves eat dogs.
Third greatest shooting guard of all time. Y’all already know the two ahead of him.
Kobe and Sam Jones 😉
I think the two greatest guards of all time are Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson. I'm sure I think the third-greatest guard is either Kobe Bryant or Jerry West, but I'm not sure which of them I think it is...
D wade and Mj...West isn't really a sg and he is 4th at best behind Kobe as well...stop it...wade would cook west....and defend him well...
@@Zane_Zaminskyyou mean lakers legends kcp and jodie meeks
@@razkable West was 4x first team and 1x second team all defensive team. The NBA didn’t start awarding All defensive teams until he was 32 years old.
IMHO of NBA executive/coach legends it’s Red, Jerry and Riley. I leave Phil off the list because he’s a coward who seemed to always have his back flair up when his teams weren’t contenders.
Funny story
Lebron almost won nba finals mvp in 2015 on the losing team but lost out to Andre igudala by 2 votes
Womp, womp. Boo friggin' hoo. Buh-bye.
Now they can change the logo
Eisen has spent a career shoe horning self deprecation into the ability slot. It’s never worked. A reliable and bumbling bore.
Jerry West>Neil Armstrong and it's not even close.
Can we update the logo to Kobe now?
no
No. even less now
That's really insensitive
I honestly don't think Kobe would've wanted that.
Edit: Jordan gets the logo before Kobe anyway.
You are not 100% wrong.
As a Lakers fan thank you trading for Kobe during the draft and thank you getting Shaq. You’re truly a legend Jerry West!
kareem is an intellect if you think 80 is a high IQ
Total legend - need to update the logo to Russell, Kareem, or Jordan though. Can't have a white guy as NBA logo anymore - NBA is totally tone-deaf. ✌️🪷🏀
