      Actually, he was very close to Joe Mazzulla and probably rooting for him. Mazzulla was a teammate at West Virginia University with Jonnie West (Jerry's son), and is stil close friends with Jonnie to this day. I'd say Jerry West and Joe Mazzulla were very close too.

    In addition to helping the Grizzlies reach their first 50 win season in 17 years, he also had his handprints on the Clippers team that reached the Western Conference Finals for the first time in their franchise history. Every team he touched, something noteworthy happened for that franchise. RIP Jerry.

    Even if I weren't a lifelong Lakers fan whose parents saw Jerry play in person numerous times, I would be sorry to hear about the passing of Jerry West. He is a giant in the story of the NBA and beyond that, seemed to be a genuinely kind and good person. Seeing him in tears talking about Kobe after his passing and seeing how much Kobe meant to him, showed what a big heart Jerry had. The game has lost a true legend.

    I discovered the Lakers/nba in 1972 when the Jerry/Wilt/Riles and so much more beat the Knicks in the finals. I became a die hard Lakers fan, then at 16. No matter what Jerry did or where he went, he was always first a gentleman. Though I remember him saying that the '85 ring was his favorite, because it was against Boston. Rest in peace, Jerry.

    As a Celtics fan since 1960, I have watched 10 finals featuring my Celtics and the Lakers. Nobody scared me like Jerry West--not Elgin, not Wilt, not Kareem, not Magic, not Kobe. Against arguably the greatest dynasty in sports history, he averaged (on 48% shooting): 31.1, 29.5, 33.8, 33.9, 31.3, and 37.9. As a point of comparison, MJ's finals scoring averages (also on 48% shooting) were: 31.2, 35.8, 41.0, 27.3, 32.3, and 33.5. Jordan averaged 33.5 in those six finals, West 32.9.

    Thank goodness the Celtics Dynasty led by Bill Russell ended in '69. It's no coincidence that players like West and Robertson, among other All-Time greats, finally won a Chip after being shut out throughout the decade of the '60's as the Celts won the Chip every year except for the '66-'67 season when Wilt beat Russell and the Celts in the ECF before defeating the San Francisco Warriors for the Title. Jerry finally got his ring in the magical '71-'72 season which included the Lakers 33 game winning streak in the Regular Season.
    I was lucky enough as a Teen to attend the '71-'72 All-Star game at the Fabulous Forum and see West take over the game late and lead the West All-Stars to the win. Jerry dominated the 4th qtr of that game on both ends of the court. I still have the program from that game.
    RIP Mr. Clutch. RIP.

I've interviewed many sports figures from the 1950-70s, and DiMaggio is probably the only one I'd put in Mr West's class. RIP to a legend. Modern fans have to understand about Jerry West as a player, he was the most complete guard offensively and defensively before Jordan. He went to 9 NBA Finals, had more 35+ point games in the Finals than anybody else, 5th all time in playoffs ppg at 29 PPG, averaged 27/6/7 without a 3pt shot, and of course was arguably the greatest executive in NBA history.

  • @Bork19
    @Bork19 12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    He was not scared to make a big move as a GM, trading an all star center for a 17 year old guard out of high school was considered asinine. Then they get Shaq and even then it was questioned and believed that they could’ve gotten more for Divac (they probably could’ve)

      I think the two greatest guards of all time are Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson. I'm sure I think the third-greatest guard is either Kobe Bryant or Jerry West, but I'm not sure which of them I think it is...

      D wade and Mj...West isn't really a sg and he is 4th at best behind Kobe as well...stop it...wade would cook west....and defend him well...

      @@razkable West was 4x first team and 1x second team all defensive team. The NBA didn’t start awarding All defensive teams until he was 32 years old.

    IMHO of NBA executive/coach legends it’s Red, Jerry and Riley. I leave Phil off the list because he’s a coward who seemed to always have his back flair up when his teams weren’t contenders.

    Eisen has spent a career shoe horning self deprecation into the ability slot. It’s never worked. A reliable and bumbling bore.

    Total legend - need to update the logo to Russell, Kareem, or Jordan though. Can't have a white guy as NBA logo anymore - NBA is totally tone-deaf. ✌️🪷🏀
