    Very nice, thank you. I have a Superscope CD-312 that needs new belts too, looks identical to this Marantz 1810 deck.
    I have noticed that the internal workings of these decks are used in many models.
    Makes repairing mine a lot easyer.

    I enjoyed this video. I had Marantz receiver back in the mid to late 70's. I had given it to my sister years ago, and I think he is still using it today. Marantz made high quality audio equipment.

    Would you know if most Marantz cassette decks from the late 70s use the same motor? I have a 5030 3-head with a bad motor and I'm looking to cannibalize another Marantz deck to get the machine going. Thanks for any advice!

    Thank you for the video. I have a Marantz 5000 cassette deck which is very similar to the 1810. I have two questions I hope you can help me with. The first is I changed the belts and idler tires and afterwords when I press the rewind switch it does not auto stop or pop back up when the tape has reached the end. The auto stop/pop up feature works for play and ff.
    Second question is do you know what is the replacement bulb for the record light?
    Any/all guidance is appreciated

    Thank you Dave, very helpful tips here. I just wanted to ask you a question. I have a Marantz model 5200 tape deck. The vu meters don't work. No motion at all. I appreciate any suggestions if it's possible for you. Thank you.

      I was mistaken about the vu meters. They are working on output channel but the output channel on the tape deck doesn't have sound when connected to receiver, yet it works fine through headphones, and input recorder. The tape deck is equipped with another external adaptor output RAC connector channel which they work fine, in that case the Vu meters do not work. Now, I am hoping that you have some tips with the main output RCA connections problem. If you don't mind me to ask, What do you think the problem is? Your kind advice will be truly appreciated. Thank you

    I just ordered a replacement belt set for a Sony TC-55 and at over 17 bucks plus shipping it sure makes it hard on the wallet to keep this great old equipment in top shape. Belts are SOOOO expensive for what you get.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Considering that I used to buy a 10 pack for 2.99! Yes they are. The tiny dime size belt for my Teac DA40 cost me 20.00 US by the time the shipping was added.

    • @Evan420
      @Evan420 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ZenithClarity1969 they must know that it's the most common problem in these cassette decks and players so they raise the markup so high. I recently ordered a belt from ebay for my beautiful Sony Walkman F2, for $4.90, I don't know what it costs with shipping so maybe $6. Not too bad

    Nice tip for the sizing of the belts when they're destroyed. I have an Akai GXC-725D cassette deck that looks very similar to this unit. It's got the "Glass and X'Tal Ferrite Head" printed on the cassette door. It plays fine but doesn't record. I'm not familiar with how the record mechanism works in cassette decks. Would you be able to go over the general idea of how to check for record problems? I think it might make for a good video. Thanks in advance for any help or tips you could impart.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The GX heads were exclusive to Akai. My GX265D reel to reel has 6 of them. That is 2 erase, 2 record and 2 playback.Obviously this is an auto reverse deck, and it has a center capstan with direct drive reel motors. To reverse a switch changed the heads, and the ac motor reverses direction.

    I am working on a 50 year old Star Roamer tube radio; it has a power transformer, which should provide isolation; still has two wire power cord. When plugged in one way, 65 volts ac on chassis; when plug is reversed, 27 volts ac on chassis. Can this be caused by leakage from old power transformer? Thanks for your opinion. Will replace power cord with modern grounded, three wire cord, of course.

    • @fulwell1
      @fulwell1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd be inclined to look for leaky caps, starting with any filter caps, whilst also looking for any obvious signs of a short

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      More than likely a leaky chassis isolation capacitor that goes from the line cord to the chassis.

    Is it just me but towards the end after the fix and youre playing the tape originally the spools seem to turn smoothly but then when you see them again they are jumpy? Maybe thats just an illusion due to recording/digitizing/uploading/yourtube reencoding?

      I'll do that when I get the correct size belt. After visits to 3 shops I could not get the exact size, and the one I did pick up is too tight. Since the owner is going away for 6 months he didn't want to leave it, so I put the belts in for a demo only, and then removed them until it comes back to get the correct ones installed in the spring.

    Good Gawd. A rubber band. Well it wouldn't be the first time I've seen that. How on earth people expect it to run for any time, let alone steadily enough, is quite beyond me !

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I see this all the time.Stability is actually very good as the flywheel effect of the capstan shaft smooths out the elasticity effect, but they won't last long. The problem is finding belts. I had to go to 3 different shops to find the belts for this one, and it isn't getting any easier. that's for sure. Nobody wants to bring in any belts, and even getting stuff of the internet has become a crap shoot with all the sub standard parts out there.I ordered some belts off ebay, and they were pulls from another tape deck that were looser than the original ones I was replacing.A rubber band is a fast band aid that will get the tape deck up and running again in a pinch, but it won't last very long.

  • @zx8401ztv

    Good old tapedeck, nice fix :-D
    It allways supprised me that the dc motors on old tapedecks last so long, ive seen a lot that look like that one, most still work :-D.
    Ok the speed and wobble isnt superb after all that time, but most people play pop music so its not really noticable.
    Ive seen a lot of belts become black sticky goo, but thats mostly on phillips equipment.
    The mode switch is a bugger for playing up, when spray cleaning wont work ive dissasembled the switch and cleaned the contacts with soaked paper.
    There is allways a black coating over every contact, all the manufacturers must have used the same lube in those days.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have also disassembled switches and found black gunk in them. Many times that is from someone trying to clean it with the wrong cleaner that leaves a residue behind. Sometimes it was blue gunk, and other times green.Tuner spray was the worst. The old NuTrol which was FreonTF with a lubricant was the best, but you can't get that anymore due to FreonTF being banned due to it eating the ozone. The new NuTrol is relatively good, but is now diesel based (diesel is a good solvent and lubricant) Probably has some other solvents in it too, but you can sure smell the diesel, and it makes a nice flame thrower.

    • @zx8401ztv
      @zx8401ztv 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blue or Green gunk, ive never seen that before lol.
      I used to use a switch cleaner called servisol, and it worked well on most switches/pots, but those pesky tape record/play mode selectors didnt allways play the game.
      So it was dissasemble and clean with metholated sprit and paper, and for stubborn contacts i had a odd rubberish block from maplin electronics that had fine abrasive in it, handy :-D.
      Keep the flame thrower away from that tape deck :).

      Cramolin Red and Blue is what we used before Chlorofluorocarbons, specifically Dichlorodifluoromethane were outlawed. That stuff really worked. One was used first, to clean corrosion, chase dirt and noise, the other used last, was to preserve it when done, DeOxit D5 & D100 is what they replaced it with, which like Nutrol are OK but nowhere near as good as genuine Cramoiln was.
      Oddly enough you can still buy old school Freon if you have a license, which I do. It is now cheaper by far than the new non-CFC refrigerant, the opposite of 20 years ago. I charge my '81 Corvette every so many years, 5 or more, when it needs topping off, The old stuff cools off much better than whats used today, which is why I never changed the car over. Overall, it was better all the way round to stay with the old stuff that lasts years between fills. At 5$ a 12oz can I'm not arguing the logic !

Those bands from bracelet making for kids... but I onky used them for eject mechanisms on pc dvd drives becsuse that is almost always the problem and they are accessible from the outside and i had thousands of these damn things lol!. In any other scenario I would source the proper belts tho.

      It wasn't so much the added cost of replacing the light. I didn't have one in stock, and he was really pressed for time. The owner was heading out of the country for 6 months to go to Mexico for the winter, so he couldn't wait for me to get into the parts stop to get one. I only have every 2nd Saturday off, when I can go parts shopping as the parts shop isn't open Sunday or Monday and even ordering one off the net would have resulted in a delay. He wanted it back quickly and said the light didn't matter because it sits in a cabinet with a solid door so he doesn't see it anyway.
