    A good way to keep the compressions in time is to do it to the beat of "stayin' alive"- that song is 100bpm :) I'm a nurse and every time I've done CPR I sing that out loud lol

    • @Superstarlight867530

      It's basically all the same thing - it's called the 'four to the floor' beat (four beats to the bar). Essentially the reason disco was invented; anyone, even non-rhythm-having white folks (NB. I'm white) can dance to it, so if you can dance to Stayin' Alive, or whatever, you should be able to perform CPR!
      This is a wholly non-medically-approved, not-particularly-responsible message...but still reasonably accurate! 😉

I would like to let you know that I was very upset at the moment so I went on TH-cam and I was very happy to find that you had made a comment and after watching your video I was happy. Thank you so much and I hope you have a good holiday. I got my certification about a year and a half ago, but I'm pretty sure you don't put a baby on the ground while doing CPR... You put them on your arm at a downwards angle so if they did choke on something, gravity works and it comes up.... Also, do compressions to Stayin' Alive.... it's the right tempo!
    PLEASE ACTUALLY GET YOUR CERTIFICATION BEFORE PERFORMING CPR... YOU LEARN SO MUCH MORE AND YOU ACTUALLY PRACTICE HOW TO DO IT! Don't just do it because "Rachel taught you how"... go get certified by someone who is capable of teaching and showing you the right way! Please!

    • @frisskyaj6648
      @frisskyaj6648 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      mollymiccee and if you do it inexperienced you can make the person choke even more

    • @EmilyMFilms
      @EmilyMFilms 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      mollymiccee you would put the baby at a downward angle if they have an airway obstruction but are still conscious. If the baby at any point becomes unresponsive you would put them either on the ground or a table and do compressions. If you were to just find a baby pulseless/no Respirations you go immediately into CPR

    • @adamemac
      @adamemac 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      mollymiccee Also.. yes it's ideal to be certified first BUT we would much rather you try it, following Rachel's instructions, than not do it at all. As long as you're pressing on the chest and not stomach and breathing for the patient, you're helping him/her.

    • @adamemac
      @adamemac 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      EmilyWyso Well said! I couldn't agree more!

    • @mollymiccee
      @mollymiccee 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're the only option, I agree with you, but make sure it's being done correctly - which is why I'm saying get certified.

  • @cailynrossiter5569

    There are classes all over the place if you want to get trained. I took an online info class with virtual scenarios and then went to a real life seminar where we actually got to practice on a dummy and practice first aid. I would recommend it, because worst case scenario, you never have to use it, but in the event that you do, it can save a life.

  • @norasshelfdiscovery7883
    @norasshelfdiscovery7883 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Just compressions bc it's more important. If your blood is being pumped at least residual oxygen is being transported - whereas if you do only do the breath thing but miss out on compressions that doesn't do anything helpful. Also with children you start with 2 breaths then do compressions and so on (adults: start with comressions and then 2 breaths and so on) bc reasons for passing out in children is more often related to airway problems (in adults it's more likely heart problems)
    If there are people around designate one to call 911, a second to get a defibrillator and one to get a first aid kit (always helpful - gloves, breathing mask (for the breath thing in case one doesn't want to risk possible infection (if one doesn't know the passed out person) just being honest here) and much more (plasters, bandages, scissors, etc)
    Also CPR is only necessary if the person is not breathing on his/her own - if a person is passed out but breathing simply but him/her in a stable position on his/her side - if there is no breathing or one can not be sure do CPR, if the person in fact was breathing he/she will probably soon regain consciousness and complain about the moderate pain of receiving CPR 😅👍🏻
    BUT ALWAYS DO IT ! AFTER 10 MINUTES WITHOUT BREATHING (if nobody is doing CPR) CHANCES OF SURVIVING EQUAL ZERO!!! (Every minute percentage of survival chance drops by 10% this can be prolonged and stopped by performing CPR and giving first aid !!!) it can save lives 👌🏻

      Lucyana WingBlade You go through DRSABCD.
      Danger - Yourself, Bystanders and lastly the casulty.
      Response - 'COWS' These are questions you ask the casualty to get a response.
      Can you hear me?
      Open your eyes.
      What is your name?
      Squeeze my hands.
      If you get a response put the casualty in the recovery position and still call Emergency services.
      SEND FOR HELP - Get bystanders to contact emergency services.
      Airway - Support casulty's neck and tilt in back, if there is something in their airway scoop it up in an upwards motion not downwards.
      BREATHING- LOOK, LISTEN, FEEL for breathing
      COMPRESSIONS-
      30:2 (compressions to breaths)
      2 hands for adults (2 big breaths), 1 hand for a child and (1 breath) 2 fingers for a baby (2 breaths from mouth)
      Defibrillator- Listen to instructions, don't touch the patient when the shocks are given and tell bystanders to move back so machine doesn't pick up other pulses
      These are just the basic things, for furher knowledge go to Royal Life Saving for information or even training in CPR.

    I literally just took a CPR class yesterday. The reason they tell you not to do the airways and breaths is because doing continuous compression gives the person a better chance of survival. Compression still will allow air to flow into the lungs because you are also pushing on the lungs. They barely even teach mouth to mouth anymore because compression is so vital. If you aren't trained in CPR, call 911 and put them on speaker phone and start compressions until the paramedics arrive, and you can speak with the dispatcher if you have any questions. The worst thing you can do is nothing.

  • @onerandomnerdygirl2306
    @onerandomnerdygirl2306 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I am a lifeguard and the reason you shouldn't do breathing if you aren't trained, is because if you do it wrong on a child or a baby you could burst their lungs.

      Aimée Thomas yeah...it's bad...please don't do cpr on a baby unless you have been through a class it's really dangerous. No shade to Rachel! I think this is awesome so that people will know the basics. But some times it can do more harm than good if it's done wrong. Like internal bleeding.

      I am a paramedic and med student in Germany .. I have never seen somebody bursting somebody's lungs due to cpr.. the reason why you are advised to only compress if not trained is that more people are actually willing to perform cpr, as most people are scared/disgusted of/by the breathing part - at least that's what we learn here! In babies/children it's actually more important to do the breathing (that's why you start off with 5 breaths before compressing) because the reason their hearts stop is almost always because of a breathing issue.. :)

  • @masterdare

    This video saved my babysister! I was home alone only for about 10 minutes with my baby sister (Addyson) I went to the bathroom and she was eating cheez-itz (she's 4 btw) and watching a tv show. While I was washing my hands I heard her coughing heavily, then she stopped, and started gasping for air. I ran over as quick as I could, laid her on the ground, and performed the CPR for two minutes, like what Rachel said. After that she sort of was breathing but not much. I called my mom and she was rushing home, and got home like 2 minutes after I called her. Addyson was sat up and was breathing as if she had just drank some water and it went down the wrong pipe. So my mom was hitting her back trying to make the choking stop, while was holding her hand praying. Then about 15 seconds after, she coughed up the cheez-it! Rachel, I just want you to know, you're literally a life saver😉❤️!!

    I'm an RN and certified in life support and CPR and you did a darn good job Rachel! And yes it's true - if you're not properly trained then you should only do compressions as doing ineffective breathing 1) wastes time where you could be doing compressions and 2) you may be forcing air into the stomach instead of lungs which could lead to vomiting and aspiration when (if) the person wakes up. Well done Rachel 👏🏻👏🏻

    Before you start cpr you should always check that they haven't choked or have something blocking their airways. So you must roll them on their side (if possible) (there is a special way to have them on their side so maybe google it, it is hard to explain)and make sure there is nothing blocking their airway. If it's good, start cpr. Hope this helped

      Liz_wood _ a child is someone over the age of 2 until under the age of 10 if im not mistaken. Child cpr and adult are similar. If you are unsure, treat as an adult. It's always best to let someone certified do it. If you come up on a scene and you are not certified call 911 and they will walk you through compression only cpr.

    CPR has changed to mostly compressions; they are the most affective. You were right in your suggestion to not do the breathing because it takes time away from doing compressions. Love your lessons.

    Is the Heimlich still a thing in the states? In Australia we are taught back blows and chest thrusts.
    The acronym DRSABCD is a super easy way to remember the basic of CPR in an intense and stressful situation!
    Danger (to you, bystanders and the victim), Response (are they conscious) , Send for help (call 000/911) , Air way (is their airway obstructed, chin tilt/jaw thrust) , Breathing (feel/visualise chest rise and fall) , CPR (if unconscious commence CPR 30 to 2, that's all you do) and Defibrillation (if an AED is in vicinity attach pads and the machine will analyze the heart rhythm and give voice commands to follow). If they respond to cpr/aed place them in the recovery position and wait for the ambos! It really pays to know this stuff, thanks Rachel for making everyone aware!

    I've got trained on CPR and other things and Rachel explained beautifully! This is almost 100% how you do CPR. Other thing is you should count your compressions (like 1,2,3) out loud, somebody will be able to replace you if you get tired or something.

    An infants compression ratio is actually 10 cycles of 15 compressions to 2 breathes. Infants normal heart rate is 100+ beats per minute, so they require more oxygen. And you want to check if there is an airway obstruction before you perform rescue breaths, you don't want to push anything in there further. If you can see it, pull it out, if not don't go digging in there for it. Always perform cpr with a rescue mask, you don't want to catch some disease or illness.

    pretty important content Rachel :) good to get it out there. of course it is best to go and do a course with certified teachers, but you covered the basics pretty well.
    the big acronym for cpr these days is DRSABCD like doctors abcd, danger, response, send for help, airways, breathing, cpr, defibrillation.
    the best way to check for response with babies is to clap loudly right in front of their face and check for a wince response or eye movement, like you said, babies respond differently to adults or kids

    *WELL DONE, RACHEL!* So happy you did this video!! EVERYONE needs to know how! As someone who has performed CPR on patients multiple times (not trying to say that as braging) and been both successful and not so much, I can't express how EARLY CPR HELPS A LOT before we get there! When doing it, push chest hard and consistent. May feel _different_ or weird but necessary. Try to locate and use an AED (defibrillator/shock machine) if possible, VERY EASY to use and they're in many public places like grocery stores, malls, Target, Walmart etc
    *THANKS AGAIN, RACHEL!* Great vid!

    I'm taking a emergency car class in school right now & I just want to give you some constructive criticism, Rachel. 1) the C in CAB is circulation (check for pulse). 2) DONT EVER DO MOUTH TO MOUTH! 😖 the safest way to give someone a breath is to use a breathing barrier (personal mask so their germs don't enter your mouth) you can get one on Amazon & carry with you I case it's needed 3) please don't put your face up to their mouth to check if they are breathing. Either use your hand or look for chest rise. A lot of the info was correct but those 3 things I wanted to clarify. Just thought I'd let you know that. But thanks for making a video about it. It's important to know 😊

    I think you did pretty great! Only things I would add is you have to shake the person and ask "ARE YOU OK?!" If no response, check pulse, chin lift/head tilt, check breathing. If no pulse, start compressions. If not breathing and no pulse, compressions only, unless you have a mask. If no breathing, but have a pulse, could be obstructed airway...call 911. In all instances, if you are with people, assign someone to call 911 (you said that) and also assign some one to get an AED. Most public places have them.

    D - danger (yourself, patient, others around you)
    R - response (ask the patient questions)
    S - send for help (call ambulance, get oxygen mask and defib)
    A- Airways (check airways are clear using pistol grip)
    B - Breathing ( look, listen and feel for any signs of breathing)
    C - compressions ( 30 compressions, 2 breaths. do 5 cycles or 2 minutes worth until you use defib.
    D - defibrillator (follow prompts on defib until ambulance arrives)
    DRSABCD

    I took health and a babysitting class so I'm certified in CPR and my mom works in a hospital and they said pump to the beat of staying alive. You know the song that goes AH AH AH AH stayin alive stayin alive. And then my mom also told me that you have to break their ribs of someone has a heart attack because the ribs protect the heart so if you break the ribs better chance of them living. And Rachel you did a really good job of explaining that.

  • @Alpha_Donk

    It truly is recommend if you don't have training to do hands only, I've seen people explode training dummy lungs. You could do more damage if you don't know what your doing.
    Also mouth barriers are recommended to help prevent diseases. Granted in a real world situation your probably not going to have one during a time of need.
    Also call 911 immediately, it takes one second to dial 911 and you can put it on speaker phone and start cpr while providing information regarding the current situation.

    Hi Rachel! Awesome job explaining CPR (I'm certified and studying to be in the medical field). One important thing that wasn't mentioned though, is to make sure the environment is safe, you don't want to be struck unconscious from the same thing that made the person unconscious. Also, this is weird because I had no idea you were teaching CPR today... and yet I was thinking about my CPR training last night for some reason (and I was certified before the summer).

    Actually the first thing you need to know is "Drs ABC" which is
    Check for Danger
    Check for Response
    Shout for help
    Check their airway
    Check for breathing
    Start compression
    And there are many many situations so if there are any other people who are properly trained, just let them do it. However, if it really is an emergency, then just do the basics
