Emily Artful. I’m an artist, but my friends that I’m less close with were asking me at school today asking for art. I only did free art for my sisters and family. Also a free one for my best friend but they just were like, “this girl works like 3 hours on this art plus it’s using expensive supplies and have homework on top of a busy schedule, I’ll take one” and think they could get it for free. I was being very generous when I said they could get a drawing for $6. But no. They wanted it for free. Totally understand how you feel.

And even so, I had a friend who was a hairdresser, I used to trade her DIY stuff. I'd come round and fix her curtain rail etc and I'd get a haircut. I actually thought that a 100 quid tattoo design was a bargain against a plain haircut!

Sofia Malik awww I've had something similar!! I had a pencil piece I drew of my moms friends cat... It took me definitely almost a month and she payed me $35, I it was her cat in the Grass... The grass still gives me flashbacks. Mind you she made some good money with the several Little jobs she did, she bought everyone she worked with gifts all the time.

Nameless I personally don’t give my friends and family free art (unless it’s a gift) or even discounts because it’ll get me a lot of fake friends, however I am more likely to accept art trades from my friends than my clients. I’m not judging your rule of thumb here, I’m just giving mine.

It can also depend on, what you make, how much money you use to make it - or how much time. I live from art - but with that being said, i (almost of cause) don't make a lot at all. I can't "just" give a canvas, one and a half meter long, to some friends. But maybe one day, i have the money, and the time:)

I’m in an art school majoring in visual arts. I’m still getting people asking me to draw them stuff for free. I’ve done commissions for a few of my close friends. But they pay me by helping me with school stuff (cause I have some classes I struggle with). But they ask it on Very rare occasion. The kids in my class ask ALL THE TIME (before quarantine). And it sucks, they say sh!t like “oh come on it can’t be THAT hard to draw, and I’m just like “if it not hard to draw, draw it yourself” and they look at me as if I asked them to eat a live frog. I swear I thought art school would have less of that type of people. Nope

Seriously, that last exchange is so unbelievable. It probably takes even more time than a haircut to design a tattoo, but even without that, her logic of “i went to school for that and i go to work and have clients (and you could do that stuff without going to school)” is just crazy. Out of all things, cutting hair is something people do at home all the time without formal training.

But it's "just" drawing on skin. Nobody would walk in a tattoo studio and ask for a free tattoo. But paid drawings? "OMG what an asshole."
Still think she is quite bad (not terrible) but the video was well made and I liked the topic.
I mean, some people have friends/family that would do free tattoos so maybe the person just thought that since the tattoo was free the art for it should be too? Very unlikely chance but I like to keep hope.

One time I was in school and I was sketching something before class started and this boy went up to me and asked me to draw him something. So I said “sure for 10$.” Then this kid called me a gold digger! And I turned to him and said “Do you know what a gold digger is?” And he said “No.” this repeated until the end of the year.
P.S Oh and by the way we were in 8th grade.
Art supplies cost a lot, making the art takes a lot of time, there is so much thought process that goes on behind it, it takes days and days of agonizing work, drafted sketches, mistakes and erases. So no, it's not as easy as these delusional locals make it seem. It takes a lot more than paper and a pencil. I can't with some people. The nerve. The audacity.

Art is such a hard career. No one takes it seriously. I love painting too, and I would love to eventually make some money out of it. This is something I'm dealing with, people wanting artwork but not wanting to pay for it. Also the prices you mentioned in the first example were really cheap.

YES, OMG. I get that so much and when people ask me to draw them or draw them something they like I normally do it for free because I try to be nice but then they say "that doesn't look like me at all!" Or "this doesn't look that good" So now I know to charge them either to motivate me to do the drawing or to shut them up
Oh my god the teaching part 😂. I'm no artist but I used to be good at writing essays back in highschool and my classmates were asking me to copy my work and I would say no, and they would say then can I pay you to do it for me? And I would say no I have 3 essays due next week I barely can make it myself and they would get angry and say at least can you teach me how to do it? And in my mind all I could think of would be how lazy are you? It's not that hard just read some good essays and try to have all the good stuff in your essay. It's not really comparable to art because it takes a lot more effort to be a good artist, but damn it was even easier to do it yourself than asking others. Lol.

The amount of times I've been told I charge too much, or have been asked for free art is unreal. It's like they have no concept of how much time and effort goes into making something and the materials. Good art supplies are so expensive! I'm getting so mad just listening to all of this, I know exactly how you feel
The fact that she even offered to do a trade is much nicer than I would have been in the moment.

EDIT: I'm getting a lot of replies from people saying that they ae naturally good at art and don't need to practise. I'm not doubting that you're good at art, but be careful with your words as it can come off as conceited. I'm sure you don't mean it that way, but it's not a good look.
I'm not saying everyone needs a professional art teacher, I'm saying no artist is as good as they are without hard work. By saying that they were born with it can actually be dismissive of all the years of practise they've put into it.

It CAN be natural, but it's extremely rare having that kind of talent without any prior experience. In all seriousness, pretty much anyone can be an artist if they dedicate the time to practice multiple times a week, if not daily.

This hits so close to home! I sew. The minute I mention that, people pile on the requests. “Will you make me a skirt?” “Can you sew my wedding dress?” “I need pillows for my couch, will you make them?” The awful thing was, as a young people pleaser I had not yet learned how to say the word no. But worst was my mother in law. She would hand me a big black hefty garbage sack full of her mending! Inside would be everything from threadbare nightgowns, granny panties with broken elastic and tee shirts with dissolved armpits. She’d also buy several pairs of cheap jeans for her husband and hand me the pile, saying “They need to be shortened 3 inches”. BTW, I was working full time with a baby in daycare and a neanderthal husband who didn’t help with housework. After a few years of this, I grew a pair of ovaries and would hand her bag back, saying “Sorry, I have a drawer full of mending I don’t have time for. But when my things get this bad I throw them in the rag bag or trash them” I also gave her the address of a dry cleaner who did pants hemming at $5 a leg. When she protested, I suggested she watch the JC Penney ads for sales on Wranglers or Levi’s, so she could buy the correct inseam length. That put an end to that! I love to sew and most often, my projects are gifted or sold. But listen up Bitches, do NOT ask me to dress your bridesmaids or fix your shit. Mmmkay?

I didnt do such elaborate works like most advanced but its still something I worked hard on, especially the technique and everything to make it look nice. They didnt even try the basics and asked me for my films during final week. It was exhausting trying to help...I regret doing so but I didn't want to give up on photography tho so I did the work anyway...just...not for them...

I love how people say things like" Wow your art is amazing!" " Your incredibly gifted!" Its like another artist friend of mine says! The best way to an artist you truly appreciate his art is to BUY one of his or hers pieces! It's a very simple way to demonstrate your appreciation of the art. There is no more gratifying act than for an artist to actually sell a piece. Its amazing to see someone finds enough value in what you created to have paid for it. It is genuinely humbling and deeply gratifying. Buy Art!!
I did a painting, posted it and my friend said “I could use this in my life”. I said it took me 8hrs to paint. She really thought I was going to give it to her. And still guilt trips me. 🤦🏻♀️ I get it.

I live in Slovakia, and you now I work hard but even with that, my mothly payment is 410 dollars. After paying every ckecks and groceries remains 100 dollars. So yes, for some of us this is overpriced.
