The Boeing B-29 Superfortress is an American heavy bomber developed during World War II. It was designed to replace the B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator in the long-range strategic bomber role. The B-29 was the largest and most sophisticated bomber of World War II and was equipped with advanced defensive armament, powerful engines and a pressurized bomb bay, making it one of the aircraft the most advanced of its time.
The B-29 was equipped with four Wright R-3350-23 and 23A turbocharged 18-cylinder radial engines, each capable of producing over 2,000 horsepower. It had a wingspan of over 43 meters and could carry a payload of over 9,000 kg of bombs. One of the most notable features of the B-29 was its pressurization system, which allowed crews to fly at altitudes above 9,000 meters, where temperatures were below -50°C.
The B-29 was made famous by its role in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. In addition to these historic missions, the B-29 was also used in other conflicts, including the War of Korea. After the war, some B-29s were converted into transport and weather reconnaissance aircraft. 🎧😴✈️ Sleep well !
