Unless the horse has a respiratory condition which prohibits the use of straw, or they eat their beds, (normally out of boredom) then a deep bed with good banks will help a cast horse right himself - not always, but there is a science behind such methods. Shavings, pellets, cardboard, and other modern bedding materials are used for efficient stable management for the human, (equally, space saving, muck heap management, and financial implications) - not always for the horse. However, horses, no matter what, will find a way to injure themselves!
