From Wikipedia: "The Gates of Delirium" is the first track on Yes's 1974 album, Relayer. The album title comes from the lyrics of "The Remembering (High The Memory)" from Tales from Topographic Oceans. Based on Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace, the song begins with a prelude, which leads into a lengthy instrumental section (beginning at about the 8 minute mark) representing the battle. The final section (entitled "Soon"), released as a single in 1975, is a very gentle, soothing prayer for peace and hope which represents the aftermath of the battle. Before the re-issue of Tales from Topographic Oceans or In a Word: Yes (1969 - ), this was the longest officially released studio recording by the band with almost 22 minutes, taking up the entire first side of the LP. It is the only Yes studio album to feature Patrick Moraz, who replaced keyboardist Rick Wakeman earlier in the year. Relayer reached #4 in the UK (remaining 8 weeks in the Top 40) and #5 in the US (remaining 16 weeks in the Top 200). A loud crashing sound heard in the middle of the song is caused by a set of old automobile parts mounted on a rack being pushed over. The band decided to keep it in instead of doing another take. Alan White explains in the liner notes of the 2003 remaster of the album. "The percussion on that song is pretty unusual," he says. "Jon and I used to travel together to Chris' home studio, where we recorded the album. We would stop at a junkyard along the way and pick up parts of cars. We'd just go there and bang on things. There were springs and pieces of metal, brake, and clutch plates. We'd buy them and bring them back to the studio. We built a rack and hung all these things off it, and we'd bang on them. During the recording I pushed the whole thing over. That crash is what you hear on the album." Agree, it also makes you realize how timeless it is. I just love the fact they used a rack of junk, old mufflers and such, that they literally got at a scrap yard, to make some of the stranger sounds during the "battle" part.
@@jeslookn5470 This is so true Jes. I'm 64 now and I feel like I was privileged and lucky to grow up during the 60's music explosion and into the 70's prog rock era. To me, the Moody Blues started the prog rock era which led to bands like Yes, Genesis, ELP, Strawbs, Renaissance, Camel....just to name a few. All brilliant bands. Don't get me wrong, I liked heavier rock bands as well, but, I just found myself leaning towards the prog rock. I was lucky enough to see all these bands live as well. What a great time.
I used to play this over and over again and very loud in the 70ties....until my head started to hurt. I still love to listen to it from time to time, I'm 63 now and love it as much as the first time I played it.
1975. Lying in bed in Bradenton, FL with a tiny earphone jack and a DJ named Jason on the program 'Night Song' played this. Around the 16:10 mark I am floating through the Universe. No. Never messed with drugs. Don't need them with music like this. That was when music was a living breathing miracle.
I remember buying this on it's release on vinyl It was a cold winter day, I got out of school early to get to the record shop before it closed ( a wet cold Monday afternoon) and getting home locking myself in my room and just playing and playing this - It Blew Me Away for Days/Weeks - took it to school and played it for the music teacher he was a "Classical snob", but he just said Wow!" and went and bought it. Mission Accomplished. :O)
My favorite kind of music is classical music, but I really love prog rock as well. With prog rock, you can really tell the musicians are really into it.

Ladies and gentlemen Chris Squire and Yes the greatest show on earth. This tour was my first blessing of Yes live and I was so impressed I saw them 35 more times till Squire's passing 🙏🍁

I'm 30. I only got into Relayer and Yes about 6 years ago. This is the greatest piece of musical art I've ever heard. The uncontrollable air guitar, air keyboard, air drums that come out of me when listening to this brings upon the greatest pleasure and enjoyment I've ever had before. I will forever praise Relayer and hold it in the highest regard. I will never forget when, where, and how I felt when I first listened to it. To this day, I still get goosebumps. The buildup is fantastic, then you get sent for a glorious fucking spiral starting at 8:00. Then, you get absolutely blasted with the groove at 10:23. I was so shocked when I found that this was the same song at that point. I like to imagine what if scenarios, like what if this was not limited to LP recording times, this groove feels like it goes on for a long time but what if it went on for twice or 3 times as long? I would get so lost in a trance and I would love it. Then.... Just when you think you understand how it's going to go from here.... you get literally fucked in your ear in the best way possible around 11:42 with all those weird ass sounds. And then all those bass slides come in?!?!?! This is intense. This song is so intense. Nothing will ever be as good as this. I personally feel the soon part is overrated compared to the rest of the song. Genesis, Jethro and ELP give me this same feeling, but nothing like Yes can with Relayer. I wish music today could any sort of flame to it. I hope you all are doing well.
The Gates Of Delirium and Close To The Edge are definitely the best prog songs ever but it's single songs from the album, the rest of the songs from Relayer and Close To The Edge are not so interesting to me. Genesis in terms of albums for me in 5 times better than Yes. Every from first 5 Genesis albums are masterpiece in entirety. Maybe it's just me, who appreciate mellody more than complexity. But if you are the same as me I can suggest some songs for you to listen. "sadako e le mille gru di carta" by Logos and "Horror Vacui" by Unreal City. If you would like please share something not mainstream too. It's hard nowadays to find something good.

10:23 is the only segment that has any value in this composition, and it is clearly Chris Squire's influence - but then it's ruined by the cacophonous meanderings of noise.
Some of the best 21 minutes plus prog rock ever recorded! I have always loved this song, and I still do today as I did back in 1974 (45 years ago!!!!) Even if I was just an early "teen" I remember as it was yesterday the days when, at the beginning of March, with my mam and my sister we used to walk up the hill where we were living at that time picking up anemones in the fields between the olive trees. I used to take my "mono cassette tape player" with me and play the entire album along the way. Today, every time I play this song I cannot avoid to have vivid memories of my mam walking in front of us with her long blond hair flying in the wind, smiling and happy. Every time when "Soon" started she used to ask me: "who are they?, this sounds beautiful!", she never remembered the name of the band even if the name is so easy to remember! She loved classical music with passion, in particular Vivaldi, Mozart and Tchaikovsky. They always told me that she used to listen to the "Four Seasons" while she was breastfeeding me. When I listen to this song, all the times it hits mark 16:12 I cannot help to be moved and shed some tears thinking about my mam and to those sunny, happy and peaceful days. She was so beautiful...

The melody starting at 16:12 is the pinnacle of progressive rock in my opinion. It's one of the most beautiful and haunting melodies ever created. Steve Howe's guitar playing on this track is exquisite.
War and Peace in a 22 minute nutshell by YES. The music takes patience and repeated listenings to finally get the groove in. once you do, you will crave it!
What? Not at all. The very first time I heard it it became one of my top favorite Yes song and it still is. Sound Chaser on the other hand... It took me a lot of listens to finally be able to enjoy it. I originally didn't understand the Tales from Topographic Oceans album, but after a lot of listens I love it now, track 2 and 3 are definitely in my top favorite Yes songs. Other than those few, I'd say Yes music is extremely accessible.
I agree with Video Tape. I've somehow dodged Yes most of my life, focusing on Genesis, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull and (Fish era) Marillion; it never really caught me (and I never really bothered digging into it), until I heard ProgRockDock's collection of favourite Yes songs. When I heard Gates of Delirium, I was instantly captured, and kept thinking: "Why on earth haven't I heard this one before?" The whole battle section is phenomenal, and Soon is one of the most hauntingly beautiful pieces they ever did. Thanks to Sebastian (ProgRockDock), I now enjoy a list of wonderful Yes songs, even if I gave up on some of it (Tales from Topographic Oceans for instance - I just don't get it, and I think life is too short, and great music comes in such an abundance, that I will probably walk happily to my grave without spending any more time trying to enjoy that album...)
I've felt that same way since 1977, when I first heard this. I have a sinking feeling we're at 6'47". It does end with a Picardy third though, which gives me hope for the distant future. We have a lot of discord to go through first.
I usually avoid listening to this song, so that everytime I listen to it, it can sound brand new. I am moved by it and in awe of it every single time. It is all it has been already called here, the acumen of prog rock, Yes's masterpiece, the completion of humanity's music in its widest sense.
Funny, he once commented (I paraphrase a bit, I'm sure): "I don't know how they let me get away with it!" Well, Steve, maybe because "it" is extraordinary.
Steve's playing is some of the 'bravest' guitar playing out there. Might seem a strange statement but his inventiveness and musicality is absolutely incredible and isn't afraid to go to places where others wouldn't go.
i agree steve is one of the all time greats but then again whatever lineup yes had they produced masterpieces i overlooked this one for years but its magnificent
I had a friend that was totally into Yes, He drove me nuts. At the time, I was into Southern rock. This album was the first I bought of Yes. I love this song. I have many Yes albums now. Saw them in 2000. Best concert I ever went too. They played Gates too. Thanks Chris...
I wasn't really into music until I was at a friends house one Saturday sometime in 1971. The Radio was on and in those days the late Alan Freeman DJ'd a programme in the afternoon dedicated solely to album bands and he played Yes. I just sat there listening. I couldn't believe what I was hearing, it was like nothing I'd ever heard before. I was totally blown away and 49 years on I still haven't heard anything else like them and they remain my number one band.
I had the same experience in '72 when a preview of the film Yesshows was shown on the Old Grey Whistle Test. The first song they played was Close To The Edge and it blew me away; and it still does!
An absolute masterpiece. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Rick Wakeman, but I always wished that Yes had continued a bit more with this lineup with Patrick Moraz. He gave them such an edge.
remember getting this album the week it was released wondering what it would sound like with Wakeman having left the band and this was a new studio release. My friends and I had been big Yes fans since the Yes Album and had seen them on Fragile ,CTTE, and Tales Tours which were all fantastic. Got the Relayer record and we preceded to get right for the first listening smoking a bunch of good Columbian Bud and WOW! Minds blown ..... and then saw them do it live at Tampa Stadium. They were such a special band in the 70's .
For me the biggest piece of music of the 20th century. I am a huge Genesis Fan, but this composition of Yes is simply the fucking great song of Progrock. It will never be topped by anything, I guess.
Yeah, Laurina, I agree. They ("Gates" & "Supper's") are rather like apples and oranges. They're both superb. Certainly, "Gates of Delirium" is my favourite Yes song, running neck and neck with "Awaken". "Supper's Ready" is my favourite Genesis song. For what it's worth...(ha!)
10 years old in '68, just went to work on my Dad's rockpile. Already drumming on everything around me as a kid bought I Santana and War albums first. Then Fragile when an older brother gave me a Japanese Beatle bass. Then mostly Stratocasters and everything I heard mimicked for the next 50 years.
I had no idea how badly the original mix served this album. Steven's remix and remaster brings the music out of the muddled, overcharged, sound effect-laden mix of the first one. Absolutely stellar.
The original album mix was a muddy, overdriven nightmare. I think the detail this one brings out, particularly with Moraz and the rhythm section, is pretty astonishing.
Yes you can Troy. This has been a go to song for myself and my drum kit. Have it dialed, but it nice to hear exactly what Alan is doing. I like the original vinyl, but this is a great mix as well. Technology has come along way since the recording.

I saw them in Louisville when they were touring this album. The ticket cost $5.50. I was less than 20 feet away from Chris and Moraz on the floor and only a few feet from one of the big speakers. My ears buzzed for 2 days. It was an amazing evening.

@The Sense8 Thank You Project I didn't know that. What happened to Eddie Offord? Fragile is probably, to this day, one of the best sounding albums I've heard in terms of dynamics, clarity, and mix. But Relayer sounds like it was recorded and mixed on a broken 8-track in someone's garage. In fact, Going For The One sounds really "mushy" as well.

The keyboard at 9:42 Is one of the highlights of the entire album. Patrick Moraz shines and brings the passage to a whole new level. I have been listening to this album for a quarter of a century, and have only just now heard the keyboards clearly at that point of the song. I will still probably prefer the original mix, but now I can listen for the notes and know what I am hearing. Steve Howe's guitar battle sounds are much clearer than I have ever heard. The drums are clear and unobstructed, and the bass has a whole new presence. I can hear each note that Squire is picking distinctly.
FEW bands are better live. YES is one of those bands. and their music is SUPER complicated !! YESSONGS is a collection of the greatest live recordings in history

Saw the Relayer tour in 1975. The thing with Yes is they replicated their music very well in their live shows. I was stunned at how close to the recording the live show was. Fantastic!!!!!!!!
I've listened to this song well over 1,000 times, and this Steven Wilson mix is AMAZING! I'm hearing things I never heard in the original mix, or at least were so low previously. The singing harmonies are spacious and the instruments are all placed amazingly clearly in his mix. Chris Squire sounds great, and Steve Howe's guitar seems to have voices I never heard before. Just amazing to listen to! Gotta get these.

What a Masterpiece! This is the most epic bass composition of all time. Saw them do it several times, and it was always one of the most powerful pieces ever! YES was a one time event! There will never be another! I think this is their answer to CTTE! Back when I could not figure out how they memorized these pieces.
This was the first Yes tour I saw in concert. I wanted to see Wakeman, and I had never even heard of Patrick Moraz .... but he seemed like such a scientific player .. even during the battle movement, he was calm and focused ... It was pure joy watching Yes play the complete Relayer album, and I'll never forget Moraz' performance.
Steve Wilsons remix sounds like an amazing entire alternate take- im hearing keyboard and guitar parts ive never heard in 45 years! Yes's greatest song -- the battle sequence starting at 8:05 is Steve's most incredible sounding guitar work. And Patrick's keyboard sounds and solos are fantastic. Chris is otherworldly as usual !
The bass tone at 10:24 just kills me. It just gets me grooving. The whole song is too good. Though I have already deemed Close To The Edge as my favourite song ever, The Gates of Delirium is definitely a strong contender.
It is amazing, I'm surprised the members of Yes didn't complain at the time to whoever engineered it about how distorted the original sounded. This is the one Yes album that really NEEDED to be remixed!
@@mikereiss4216 I don't know how "distorted" the original vinyl sounded, especially since Sound Chaser is almost MIDI-like and the other tune is a ballad. But Jon Anderson did say that this was the "Grey period" of Yes production. Some of Steve Howe's best stuff here is buried in the mix, but that's okay, makes it even better w/ headphones.
the sheer skill and coordnation alone are impressive but these dudes did this all in one take. the length of the composition combined with the skill passion and effort required to perform it perfectly put me in awe
Ah no way, they recorded this just like their previous 2 albums...1-2 minutes takes, then spliced the tape together. Hell even when Rush recorded Lavilla in 1978 they wanted to record it one take, and despite trying over and over and over they wound up having to stitch three takes together to get the song.
I really think Chris Squire was playing harmonics on his bass way before anyone. My roommate in college would crank this song up and play his bass along with it.
Man , some these comments blow me away,..like Claude Fazio,.. So many my friends said that Awaken is the ultimate yes song ,..omg I love that song ,... however for me , Gates has always been No1 ,.. I dont have the musical knowledge to say why,.. I just know that even after 40 years ,..it touches my heart like no other .
I am the hugest YES fan. Placing Yes classics in favorite of best position is super tough. Delirium is ALWAYS in my top 5 and at times rises to #1. But really do you favor you children? haha !! Yes for me as 30 songs that are immaculate and about 70 that hit the superb button. They are after all the greatest ensemble of players and writers in prog and dare I say it...MUSICAL history. YES music will be played 150 years from now. Just like we play classical today. YES...just the best !!

I'm into prog since some years (I'm 27, so still young) and have discovered many great bands and pieces. Let it be Flower Kings, Spock's Beard, ELP, King Crimson, Haken, Tool, DT, Genesis, Rush, Camel, IQ, Marillion, Porcupine Tree or whosoever, the list of bands I've already discovered is long. But the ending Part ("soon") of this song is without exaggeration the finest thing I've ever heard. Words can't describe it.
This music is absolutely astounding. Rich melodic speech, harmonies breathtaking orchestration constantly renewed in the use of the stamps of the instruments, in short a Babylonian sound architecture erected by humbles and impetuous interpretes-composers🌺🕊️

I used to play this over and over again and very loud in the 70ties....until my head started to hurt. I still love to listen to it from time to time, I'm 63 now and love it as much as the first time I played it.
1975. Lying in bed in Bradenton, FL with a tiny earphone jack and a DJ named Jason on the program 'Night Song' played this. Around the 16:10 mark I am floating through the Universe. No. Never messed with drugs. Don't need them with music like this. That was when music was a living breathing miracle.
I remember buying this on it's release on vinyl It was a cold winter day, I got out of school early to get to the record shop before it closed ( a wet cold Monday afternoon) and getting home locking myself in my room and just playing and playing this - It Blew Me Away for Days/Weeks - took it to school and played it for the music teacher he was a "Classical snob", but he just said Wow!" and went and bought it. Mission Accomplished. :O)

My favorite kind of music is classical music, but I really love prog rock as well. With prog rock, you can really tell the musicians are really into it.
Yanto2013 I received this on a pink plastic 8 track tape for Christmas 1977. Pink wasn’t the appropriate color.

I'm 30. I only got into Relayer and Yes about 6 years ago. This is the greatest piece of musical art I've ever heard. The uncontrollable air guitar, air keyboard, air drums that come out of me when listening to this brings upon the greatest pleasure and enjoyment I've ever had before. I will forever praise Relayer and hold it in the highest regard. I will never forget when, where, and how I felt when I first listened to it. To this day, I still get goosebumps. The buildup is fantastic, then you get sent for a glorious fucking spiral starting at 8:00. Then, you get absolutely blasted with the groove at 10:23. I was so shocked when I found that this was the same song at that point. I like to imagine what if scenarios, like what if this was not limited to LP recording times, this groove feels like it goes on for a long time but what if it went on for twice or 3 times as long? I would get so lost in a trance and I would love it. Then.... Just when you think you understand how it's going to go from here.... you get literally fucked in your ear in the best way possible around 11:42 with all those weird ass sounds. And then all those bass slides come in?!?!?! This is intense. This song is so intense. Nothing will ever be as good as this. I personally feel the soon part is overrated compared to the rest of the song. Genesis, Jethro and ELP give me this same feeling, but nothing like Yes can with Relayer. I wish music today could any sort of flame to it. I hope you all are doing well.
The Gates Of Delirium and Close To The Edge are definitely the best prog songs ever but it's single songs from the album, the rest of the songs from Relayer and Close To The Edge are not so interesting to me. Genesis in terms of albums for me in 5 times better than Yes. Every from first 5 Genesis albums are masterpiece in entirety. Maybe it's just me, who appreciate mellody more than complexity. But if you are the same as me I can suggest some songs for you to listen. "sadako e le mille gru di carta" by Logos and "Horror Vacui" by Unreal City. If you would like please share something not mainstream too. It's hard nowadays to find something good.

Some of the best 21 minutes plus prog rock ever recorded! I have always loved this song, and I still do today as I did back in 1974 (45 years ago!!!!)
Even if I was just an early "teen" I remember as it was yesterday the days when, at the beginning of March, with my mam and my sister we used to walk up the hill where we were living at that time picking up anemones in the fields between the olive trees. I used to take my "mono cassette tape player" with me and play the entire album along the way. Today, every time I play this song I cannot avoid to have vivid memories of my mam walking in front of us with her long blond hair flying in the wind, smiling and happy. Every time when "Soon" started she used to ask me: "who are they?, this sounds beautiful!", she never remembered the name of the band even if the name is so easy to remember! She loved classical music with passion, in particular Vivaldi, Mozart and Tchaikovsky. They always told me that she used to listen to the "Four Seasons" while she was breastfeeding me.
When I listen to this song, all the times it hits mark 16:12 I cannot help to be moved and shed some tears thinking about my mam and to those sunny, happy and peaceful days. She was so beautiful...

War and Peace in a 22 minute nutshell by YES. The music takes patience and repeated listenings to finally get the groove in. once you do, you will crave it!

What? Not at all. The very first time I heard it it became one of my top favorite Yes song and it still is. Sound Chaser on the other hand... It took me a lot of listens to finally be able to enjoy it.
I originally didn't understand the Tales from Topographic Oceans album, but after a lot of listens I love it now, track 2 and 3 are definitely in my top favorite Yes songs.
Other than those few, I'd say Yes music is extremely accessible.

I agree with Video Tape. I've somehow dodged Yes most of my life, focusing on Genesis, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull and (Fish era) Marillion; it never really caught me (and I never really bothered digging into it), until I heard ProgRockDock's collection of favourite Yes songs. When I heard Gates of Delirium, I was instantly captured, and kept thinking: "Why on earth haven't I heard this one before?" The whole battle section is phenomenal, and Soon is one of the most hauntingly beautiful pieces they ever did. Thanks to Sebastian (ProgRockDock), I now enjoy a list of wonderful Yes songs, even if I gave up on some of it (Tales from Topographic Oceans for instance - I just don't get it, and I think life is too short, and great music comes in such an abundance, that I will probably walk happily to my grave without spending any more time trying to enjoy that album...)
I've felt that same way since 1977, when I first heard this. I have a sinking feeling we're at 6'47". It does end with a Picardy third though, which gives me hope for the distant future. We have a lot of discord to go through first.
This is a tremendous masterpiece in general, but 16:12 marks the start of one of the most haunting and beautiful pieces of music ever written

I usually avoid listening to this song, so that everytime I listen to it, it can sound brand new. I am moved by it and in awe of it every single time. It is all it has been already called here, the acumen of prog rock, Yes's masterpiece, the completion of humanity's music in its widest sense.
I don't think there's been any song recorded which displays the astonishingly diverse skill-set of a single guitarist better than this one.
Funny, he once commented (I paraphrase a bit, I'm sure): "I don't know how they let me get away with it!" Well, Steve, maybe because "it" is extraordinary.
Steve's playing is some of the 'bravest' guitar playing out there. Might seem a strange statement but his inventiveness and musicality is absolutely incredible and isn't afraid to go to places where others wouldn't go.

I wasn't really into music until I was at a friends house one Saturday sometime in 1971. The Radio was on and in those days the late Alan Freeman DJ'd a programme in the afternoon dedicated solely to album bands and he played Yes. I just sat there listening. I couldn't believe what I was hearing, it was like nothing I'd ever heard before. I was totally blown away and 49 years on I still haven't heard anything else like them and they remain my number one band.
I had the same experience in '72 when a preview of the film Yesshows was shown on the Old Grey Whistle Test. The first song they played was Close To The Edge and it blew me away; and it still does!
From a Genesis super fan, Prog never got better than this. Many come close to it but this just takes the cake

An absolute masterpiece. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Rick Wakeman, but I always wished that Yes had continued a bit more with this lineup with Patrick Moraz. He gave them such an edge.
And Steve Howe collaborates with him more than he does Kaye and Wakeman. He does this with Moraz & Downes only.
No doubt Relayer would have been quite different with Wakeman in place of Moraz.
remember getting this album the week it was released wondering what it would sound like with Wakeman having left the band and this was a new studio release. My friends and I had been big Yes fans since the Yes Album and had seen them on Fragile ,CTTE, and Tales Tours which were all fantastic. Got the Relayer record and we preceded to get right for the first listening smoking a bunch of good Columbian Bud and WOW! Minds blown ..... and then saw them do it live at Tampa Stadium. They were such a special band in the 70's .
Relayer and Tales are definitely my two favorite Yes albums...They're both from another space and time....
For me the biggest piece of music of the 20th century. I am a huge Genesis Fan, but this composition of Yes is simply the fucking great song of Progrock. It will never be topped by anything, I guess.

Relayer was the first Album I bought in 1974. It's still one of the best I have.
10 years old in '68, just went to work on my Dad's rockpile. Already drumming on everything around me as a kid bought I Santana and War albums first.
Then Fragile when an older brother gave me a Japanese Beatle bass. Then mostly Stratocasters and everything I heard mimicked for the next 50 years.

I had no idea how badly the original mix served this album. Steven's remix and remaster brings the music out of the muddled, overcharged, sound effect-laden mix of the first one. Absolutely stellar.
The original album mix was a muddy, overdriven nightmare. I think the detail this one brings out, particularly with Moraz and the rhythm section, is pretty astonishing.

I saw them in Louisville when they were touring this album. The ticket cost $5.50. I was less than 20 feet away from Chris and Moraz on the floor and only a few feet from one of the big speakers. My ears buzzed for 2 days. It was an amazing evening.

@The Sense8 Thank You Project I didn't know that. What happened to Eddie Offord? Fragile is probably, to this day, one of the best sounding albums I've heard in terms of dynamics, clarity, and mix. But Relayer sounds like it was recorded and mixed on a broken 8-track in someone's garage. In fact, Going For The One sounds really "mushy" as well.

The keyboard at 9:42 Is one of the highlights of the entire album. Patrick Moraz shines and brings the passage to a whole new level. I have been listening to this album for a quarter of a century, and have only just now heard the keyboards clearly at that point of the song.
I will still probably prefer the original mix, but now I can listen for the notes and know what I am hearing. Steve Howe's guitar battle sounds are much clearer than I have ever heard. The drums are clear and unobstructed, and the bass has a whole new presence. I can hear each note that Squire is picking distinctly.
Mike that keyboard solo at the end of Sound Chaser is one of my favorite keyboard solos of all time.
I still prefer Rick Wakeman's work on Tales and Close to the Edge

Saw the Relayer tour in 1975. The thing with Yes is they replicated their music very well in their live shows. I was stunned at how close to the recording the live show was. Fantastic!!!!!!!!

I've listened to this song well over 1,000 times, and this Steven Wilson mix is AMAZING! I'm hearing things I never heard in the original mix, or at least were so low previously. The singing harmonies are spacious and the instruments are all placed amazingly clearly in his mix. Chris Squire sounds great, and Steve Howe's guitar seems to have voices I never heard before. Just amazing to listen to! Gotta get these.

Experienced the Relayer tour in 1975 at Long Beach Arena on my 20th birthday and at the Cow Palace two days later. Truly mesmerizing.
I got to see them do this once in all the times I've seen them. It made me cry. I couldn't believe that were playing it. A great Yes moment in my Yes memories of seeing them. And in Philadelphia, Yes was a beloved band. Take care all😷💚🦅🏈

What a Masterpiece! This is the most epic bass composition of all time. Saw them do it several times, and it was always one of the most powerful pieces ever! YES was a one time event! There will never be another! I think this is their answer to CTTE! Back when I could not figure out how they memorized these pieces.
This was the first Yes tour I saw in concert. I wanted to see Wakeman, and I had never even heard of Patrick Moraz .... but he seemed like such a scientific player .. even during the battle movement, he was calm and focused ... It was pure joy watching Yes play the complete Relayer album, and I'll never forget Moraz' performance.

But Jon Anderson did say that this was the "Grey period" of Yes production. Some of Steve Howe's best stuff here is buried in the mix, but that's okay, makes it even better w/ headphones.
Theres still plenty of good music being made. You just have to look for it.

the sheer skill and coordnation alone are impressive but these dudes did this all in one take. the length of the composition combined with the skill passion and effort required to perform it perfectly put me in awe
Ah no way, they recorded this just like their previous 2 albums...1-2 minutes takes, then spliced the tape together. Hell even when Rush recorded Lavilla in 1978 they wanted to record it one take, and despite trying over and over and over they wound up having to stitch three takes together to get the song.

I really think Chris Squire was playing harmonics on his bass way before anyone. My roommate in college would crank this song up and play his bass along with it.

I am the hugest YES fan. Placing Yes classics in favorite of best position is super tough. Delirium is ALWAYS in my top 5 and at times rises to #1. But really do you favor you children? haha !! Yes for me as 30 songs that are immaculate and about 70 that hit the superb button. They are after all the greatest ensemble of players and writers in prog and dare I say it...MUSICAL history. Let it be Flower Kings, Spock's Beard, ELP, King Crimson, Haken, Tool, DT, Genesis, Rush, Camel, IQ, Marillion, Porcupine Tree or whosoever, the list of bands I've already discovered is long. But the ending Part ("soon") of this song is without exaggeration the finest thing I've ever heard. Words can't describe it.
I'm still a teenager and Gates is my favourite song at the moment, Steve Howes best guitar work is on this album in my opinion

This music is absolutely astounding. Rich melodic speech, harmonies breathtaking orchestration constantly renewed in the use of the stamps of the instruments, in short a Babylonian sound architecture erected by humbles and impetuous interpretes-composers🌺🕊️

Remember getting the album when it first released, me and my mate Darren sitting on the floor in his room sharing a john player special the news agent sold us (one cig at a time was all we could afford) and just floating away on this. Was it the time of our lives YES
