It's more noticeable when you're reviewing footage. But, if you watch at 11:54, you can see a point where the collision detection is way off. I get killed by the frog, despite there being a sizable gap between it and myself. That doesn't happen *often* in the game, but enough for you to go... hmmmm, there's something a little off here.

The compromise between infinite lives and dying continuously was the continue ‘cheat’ that let you continue on the game over screen at the cost of $400 and hold up on the d-pad pressing button 2 continuously (apparently 8 time).

I think the issue could be that the underlying game is based on the version with the old graphics regardless of which mode you're in, including the hit boxes, but the new graphics are a bit more dynamic in size and shape. Even his idle frame is a bit shorter in the new version, so I'm wondering if you can get killed by something which appears to fly over your head.

  • @jameswalt1
    @jameswalt1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

There's a significant issue that John from Digital Foundry was discussing on their weekly Podcast. For every 6 frames there's only 5 frames of animation, so every 5 frames it skips a frame and it makes it feel completely off. Not that the original game isn't hard already, but this issue is creating an even bigger problem with precision and movement. He speculated that they may have started the project code based on the PAL version of the game, then the project spiraled passed the point of being able to correct. That would make sense mathematically (50hz > 60hz). You can visibly see the micro stutter watching footage.

I've seen a lot of reviews bashing it, honestly. Push Square definitely didn't like it...going as far as to ponder who even asked for this remake in the first place. It has more right to exist than the two Bubsy games we got a few years prior, but I'll agree that it's a bit flawed.

This guy is full of crap.. it's a great remake. I put about 5000 hours into the original as a kid. This guy obviously played it just a few times. It is a difficult game, don't expect to beat it easily. Controls are slippery, and you have to basically remember the whole game. That being said, I don't like some of the boss changes, but the new music is really fun.

On the release day, the devs participated in some Twitch streams with spanish gaming influencers, as they're spanish. Turns out that the issue with the precission is actually a design decission to remain more faithful to the original, and not a bug or a flawed implementation, even they had toyed with other controls and those were just disabled (I believe that's the reason why there are those assets for adjusting the hitboxes). Seeing the reports from these streammers live and the community in general, they announced that they would enable these better controls as an option in an upcomming patch but the reviews were already on the way and it lost its momentum. Patch rolled 3 months later and nowadays there are options to enable reworked controls and adjusted collisions, which would make the game much more enjoyable.

    Hello!
I'm Daniel Parrado, the programmer of this game.
Sorry for taking so much time to comment but I shit you not: I have been looking for this video for years.
I watched a ton of reviews back in the days of the release so I wasn't able to find this one.
That weird sprite was a joke between Josyan and me.
He told me he used to have an unconventional interpretation of the frog enemy's sprite when he was a little kid.
He thought the nostrils were the eyes and the actual eyes were some kind of ears.
Then Josyan modified Alex' main sprite by adding the frog "face" and we called him "The actual hero of the game", "the actual main character", etc, as a joke.
Some time after that, I began using said sprite as a placeholder when I was coding the logic of the enemies while Narehop was making the final art.
I was pretty sure I removed all references to frog-kidd but looks like I left some behind and Unity Engine added it to the final build.
    So, mistery solved!
Thank you so much for the video, really appreciate it!

I only played this recently on an emulator on a Pentium Pro machine - my wife asked if I could find the game, as she played it on her GAM BOY she had as a kid. Needless to say it took me forever to find the game as I was sure it was a Nintendo title. Turns out, South Koreans had a Samsung Master System called GAM BOY lol. Neat game though, I was also getting frustrated at the precision required.

Having a graphical option to switch between modern and retro pixel art is something that was also done for the recent remakes/remasters of
Command & Conquer - Remastered .. Available on Steam: store.steampowered.com/app/1213210/Command__Conquer_Remastered_Collection/
If anyone fondly remembers playing this in the 90s and would like the exact same game, but with tons of fixes, made utterly beautiful and lots of optional customizations.. I REALLY can't recommend this game enough.. You can press SPACE BAR any time in-game to swap, seamlessly, between beautiful modern graphics and the glorious old voxel art
C&C-Remastered is exactly what Command and Conquer should have always been, none of that Generals / RA3 crap when EA came in and pissed all over the strategy and army/base-building aspects of the game, opting instead to focus almost entirely on graphics rather than strategy and gameplay. C&C-R is perfect.

Just got myself a switch so this is really cool to know is a thing! I never had a Master System back in the day but my best friend did. This was a rental his dad found and we found is quite different and enjoyed it. Fast forward to my collecting days and I fiund a stack of games still with boxes in a thrift store. One title of course was Alexx Kid! Now nostalgia is tricky thing, but I have grown fond of how some titles on the old Sega still have a good level of challenge. Maybe it was because I never played them endlessly as I did with a few NES games I had. Still not my favorite platform game on the system, that goes to "Wonder Boy in Monster Land"! If I could get my hands on an old arcade cabinet of that I'd drown in nostalgia!

My recollection was that you had 2 encounters with Scissors-Head, one at the end of the volcano level and then at the end of pissy short level before the gyrocopter stage. I could get to get to the end boss but never beat him as the moving shuriken always got me. I did find a continue code that used points as cost so when you didn't have enough game over.

I can't say I have that much trouble with Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Or any of the old Sonic games. I was really confused when someone I knew was playing through Sonic 2 and said they were spamming save states every five seconds nearly. Especially since the only real difficult part of the games is the final boss usually due to no rings.

Games like this are hard for us now. At that time we were more „hardcore“, because most games were harder. No save features, less levels, a lot arcade ports.
Now you have games for casuals. A lot of checkpoints per level, autosave, easy game modes, sometimes immortality or a chance to skip when you die to often.
When i play an old game now i die fast. Mostly i don‘t even get the first level.

    • @flightlesschicken7769

That hard design was a hold over for from the arcades because they were designed to suck quarters out of you. Nothing to do with "casuals"

@@flightlesschicken7769 Okay, then the mistake was on my side. But the core is the same.
Back in the day there were a lot of arcade ports which were very hard. But still then i played games like „Super Ghouls and Ghosts“ to the end. Today i‘m not able anymore. ;-)
But as i later heard the japanese people were even more „hardcore“, so the games they made were very hard for western people, too.
Today, and this is still my opinion, they games were too easy in comparison. You can save any time, you have more lives or what ever.

I can only find one website that mentions the "mythical giant monkey beast house prince" thing and I can't figure out where they got "osaru-ka no ouji" from or where were they got the idea that it means "mythical giant monkey beast house prince"... Osaru just means a normal "monkey" 😂😂 and "Alex Kidd Osaru" doesn't sound anything like a "pun" in Japanese. Does anybody know where that came from?

The cartridge version of Alex Kidd in Miracle World that we got in Canada circa 1987, which I think was imported from Europe or at least it was an NTSC version but with the European 5-language manual, had Alex Kidd eating an onigiri between screens. I guess that preceded the hamburger version a lot of western countries got.

    • @DenisNorden
      @DenisNorden 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Same here. I had an early Mastersystem release in the UK (the control pad still had the screw-in joystick), but it definitely had the Rice Ball / Onigiri on the cartridge version I played. And eventually completely finished after swearing at the penultimate level many, MANY times.
Took me ages to realise that the little white hut with the black door which which Alex ate at the end of each level was actually just a very oversized foodstuff.

The original US release had the onigiri. I think I got mine in 1987, so it must have been mostly early western copies that weren't "burgerized". I didn't know anyone else with a Master System. A few friends bought a Power Base converter for their Genesis because Master System games because super cheap here for a time, though I didn't know the hamburger version existed before youtube.
