I remember the 1989 crash well.

Among the last AEC's were bought by sta and would have been plying the streets and possibly interchanging with the O'bahn.

I didn't know that there was a crash.

So what is the verdict on the O'bahn? Success or failure?

Success, around 30,000 passengers per day.

And every so often some dickhead drives onto it even tho it is clearly marked with big flashing yellow lights and NO ENTRY signs.
Then once they are on it the game becomes 'how far can I go before I fall off?'
Other then that its pretty good.

i swear by it from klemizg to the city then connect onto either w90 or 200 onto work which is in panorama when not driving on my own.far better than the alternative 174-176 or 178 to town and connecting onwards(i live in payneham)

Overwhelming success. The ease of getting into town from the north-east via the O-Bahn has made it a very popular mode of transport

      Sucessful.
Though it can't handle the volume of passengers as a train or even light, it wasn't expected too.
It did make ridership go way up though.
It's a bit rough & noisy compered with rail, but the speed of the journey is very good for the distence & those Mercs were state of the art for their time.

It's not a pity, that such systems are on the decline around the world and are being converted into trams or light rail ... including Adelaide.
Seen transversely, the route of an O-Bahn is equivalent to a multiple tank barrier. In contrast, the grooved rail of a tram has never and nowhere restricted the use of the street area !

That was never Street area to begin with though! It was originally planned to have either a dedicated heavy or light rail route along that corridor, however that was abolished in favour of the O-Bahn as it would supposedly be more popular, and maybe also slightly cheaper!

Exactly ... and this is the classic milkmaid bill, made in many cities of the world, which only have recognized what kind of a deceptive package such a system is, in our days. And that's one of the reason, why the City of Caen (F), Nancy (F), Essen (GER) and others with "Guided" or "AVR" BRT-Bus, have turned to Tramway / Lightrail by now, or are underway to.
However, a bus - no matter which one - has no place on routes with high ridership, that are served more economically (and more attractively) by rail (Tram; LRV; Metro). It's that easy for today's urban planners !
      👋 🇩🇪
On the other hand, it may makes definetly sense to enable buses to use the tram tracks (including tunnel and viaduct sections, as in Essen (GER) ), in order to improve the mass transit system of a city as a whole.
In addition, here's something for you to enjoy, from my country :
