One of the most common types of cuts you'll have to make with a circular saw is the CROSSCUT. This short video from The Honest Carpenter will show you how to make the fastest, easiest crosscuts possible with the circular saw, and very simple tools and techniques!
Circular Saw Basics: EASIEST CROSSCUTS!! (6 Tips For Fastest, Easiest Circular Saw Crosscuts!)
Circular saws intimidate new DIYers because they're a FREEHAND TOOL, meaning that they have no system of guides built in to keep them on track.
To make very accurate circular saw crosscuts, I believe that you need a guide that is easy to use, and always at hand.
I prefer to use the common SPEED SQUARE.
By holding the speed square against the edge of a board, you can use it as a guide for the edge of the sole plate of your circular saw.
I like to keep the bar of the speed square along the edge of the board nearest to me--though some people hang the bar from the far edge.
It's often a good idea to clamp your speed square before making your circular saw cut. Just be sure that the clamp is not in the way of the circular saw body.
You can also use the speed square to make ANGLED CUTS with the circular saw!
Just pivot the speed square at the corner until the correct angle number is aligned with the edge of the board. Then, use the edge of the speed square like normal as a guide for the edge of the circular saw sole plate.
It's a good idea to clamp down your board as well to prevent movement or wandering.
Just remember: CIRCULAR SAWS ARE DANGEROUS!
This video is just a source of information. It's up to you to use tools safely! Follow all safety instructions in your manual, and be sure to seek help or guidance from a professional if you need it. Never make a cut if you feel that it's unsafe to do so!
    Thanks for watching!

I taught middle school woodshop for 40 years. I really appreciate your efforts to give good safe instruction to the next generation. Apprentice training served this function in the old days. Due to the lack of shop classes in schools today, it is up to TH-cam and other online sources to pass on needed skills to the next generation. Thanks again!

As a father of three pushing 40, I wish that I paid attention more back in shop class. I have skills but they aren't necessarily transferable to home life and I find being able to do basic carpentry among other skills trades invaluable.

  • @terobb0

1 item novices need to know: let the side with the off cut hang free to avoid pinching the blade. There’s a temptation to make your cut with support from other boards or saw horses on both sides of the cut, but that will lead to pinching the blade and the saw will try to back up on you. The other method is to fully support the workpiece with a sacrificial board or piece of foam or whatever (this works well when breaking down plywood and you intend to use both sides of the cut).

    • @simpleman283
      @simpleman283 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

If cutting between saw horses, you must apply vertical force by the hand you are holding wood with to your work piece so that it feels almost like it if floating on the horse to your right. Otherwise like terobbO said it will pinch the blade and kick back on you.

Even though I have done joinery work for over 40 years now every now and then I watch videos like yours as a refresher of all the safety tips . . . it is so easy to become sloppy and cocky and that's when you'll make that mistake which could be severe. I do agree that apprentiships in skills like woodworking are harder to come across these days, and if it wasn't for people like you on TH-cam I just wonder how many more admissions to A&E we'd get ! Woodworking is a industry that isn't without it potentially severe hazards. I'm amazed at how many people take out the blade that supports the guard on table saws instead of just the overhead guard, which leaves the horrific chance of kick back. A friend of mine was hit by a kick back and caused internal injuries so bad that 2 days later he died, in a lot of pain !!! Scary shit eh !!
Keep up the valuable work that you do on TH-cam. Cheers.

Retired journeyman carpenter. This man knows what he is saying, listen to him. One addition; wear eye protection always, and hearing protection if you're sawing indoors. I have constant 24 hour a day ringing in my ears from ignoring the second rule.

This is the best tutorial I've come across.
For anyone considering buying this thing, my personal opinion after trying this product today is that it sucks and was a waste of money. I bought it because I'm not confident in my ability to cut a 4' straight line. After fucking up multiple pieces of expensive lumber, I gave up and did the rest freehand. Slightest bit of sawdust underneath causes it to slide. And there's nowhere to clamp it. IMO one is better off you seen a straight 2x4 or straight edge as a guide been pissing away $90 on this piece of shit.
Just my two cents for all the other random non-carpenter people out there

Good basic info. Good to watch this type of video, even if you are competent with power tools it reminds you not to be complacent, stay focused & avoid a nasty accident.

Fastcap makes a 16x24” framing square with a “parallel guide” that lets you use it as a saw straight edge, this and the 12” square lets you do exact free hand up to just under 4’ without a track saw or trying to put an 4x8 sheet through a table saw
