    First visited my sister and brother in law in 1973, they lived in Roman Road above the PO.
    Fascinated by the old Cockney Pubs Rose of Denmark, Ranleigh Arms (Teds), and saw my first topless barmaid in the Prince Albert. Great memories for me, but it aint there now!

    I lived in Old Ford Road in the 70's. Wonderful to see the pics of Roman Road, the canal, the market. So many memories.I would walk from the St Stephens estate to school (Parmiters) in Approach Road. Didn't really notice much at the time but now, looking back,so much has changed and will never come back

      Do you remember when there used to be Fallow Deer in the park? They were in a large enclosure on the area by the canal,( where the camera pans around to show the park on the left, I believe). My mum told me that there were piggeries there during the war. I also used to walk to Parmiters, through Vicky park from 68-73.

    The modern pictures of the canal were only taken about 12 years ago, yet they show almost empty canals with no moored boats. Twelve years later and every inch of the canal sides are now heaving with barges/house boats which people live in. You can now walk for miles along the canal and there are no gaps between the barges parked along the canal.

    • @RobinsJunk
      @RobinsJunk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That all took off as the Olympic stadium was being built, by the time it was finished the canal was full of boats.

      I know. Life was better with no NHS and living in slums with inadequate heating and outside toilets and no car or tv or holiday in Spain, and flying for over 1000 miles for the cost of half a days minimum wage and then dying at fifty something from tb or some other horrible disease. Yep, life was definitely betteR

    I grew up in Hackney and lived there for many years. I use to go to Roman Rd market on a Saturday shopping and my cousin Evelyn Armstrong owned a hairdressers in Roman Rd. Great photos, pity there is little detail of which road the photos are of. It would make it so much better.

    Definately shots of Bow in this, was born in 1947 in Lichfield rd, the last set of shots are Tredegar Square, used to play on the public swings and roundabouts in there as a child, East End no longer belongs to cockneys I'm afraid.

    i went to the old library ( 1 min 18 secs ) it was at the top of vivian rd / roman rd bow e3 . and the chisenhale dance space ( 3 min 15 sec ) used to be the old cohens veneer factory . they used to make spitfire propellers there . when you went up to the first floor by the stair well was a huge cross section of a tree trunk which was highly polished and had names inscribed onto it . the dance studio in my opinion has been the biggest waste of money and space since it came into being .great vid

      @@Sylentmesenja You have to remember that London boroughs haven't remained 'fixed' through time - they've changed in terms of their boundaries or boroughs have joined up with other boroughs etc.
      Alot changed back in 1974 when the LCC (London County Council) became the GLC (Greater London Council). Many small boroughs were brought together to simplify things administratively. Before then London had even more boroughs than it does now.
      Also, as other's point out, the name 'Tower Hamlets' didn't even exist before 1974. Originally the borough around there would have been either 'Hackney and Bow', or something like 'Bow and Poplar' or just 'Bow'.

    • @AndrewHelgeCox
      @AndrewHelgeCox 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robtyman4281 Sounds plausible but Hackney started outside the North boundary of Vicky Park by the start of the eighties and some of these pics are twenty years old or less. I think so about the boundary, South of the park was North Bow in Tower Hamlets, West was Bethnal Green. Pretty sure Lefebvre Walk was Bow, TH.
