They did that for the 75th anniversary of the Dambusters and I was in the kinema in the woods at Woodhall Spa where the Dambusters were based after the dams raid
When they showed this in the cinema's for the 50th anniversary I booked tickets for myself and the rest of the family to see the screening of the film. At the time this was released in 1969 my mother was only 5 and my dad was just 2 so this was their first chance of seeing it on the big screen, everyone shouted your only supposed to blow the bloody doors off too.
Apparently, when the studio heads saw the rushes of this they absolutely freaked. If any one of those drivers had been an inch out going up the ramp, the guy standing at the back of the bus waving them on would have been flattened. Watch it again - the last car up doesn't miss him by much, does it? Which just increases your admiration for the stunt work, really.
Peter Collinson - he did it himself as Paramount and some others had concerns about a stuntman doing this, so the director did it himself. Got to admire it.
I know the “you’re only supposed to blow the bloody doors off” line is the most celebrated of this fantastic movie but for me I just crack up at Michael Caine’s bolshy “Get the... Get the wheels in line... the wheels in line!!!”
The blue mini cooper is the bad boy of the 3 mini's who doesn't listen or co-operate or like taking orders The red mini is the good boy of the 3 always agreeable and totally dependable and acts as the leader The white mini cooper is like the elderly grandad of the 3 mini's who looks out for red and blue and proves he's not just some rusty hunk of junk and can bring it when push comes to shove
I got stuck on the prison level for so long, I didn't know what to do to pick the guy up! Back then you couldn't just hop on TH-cam for a guide. I bought magazines and everything trying to find the answer, then one day I found one guide that explained it (on the whole internet!) At that moment I ran upstairs and drove straight through those doors blasting the horn, I was so frickin' happy!
Literally everyone over the age of 15 has seen this at some point in their lives, the point of something being a 'classic' is that everyone's seen it regardless of it's age. Trust me it'll be a lot of years before this film becomes obscure.
@@sunsetvlogs5500 they filmed michael caine leaving wormwood scrubs, but the actual interior of the prison is kilmainham prison in dublin, interestingly, the reason they had to film in dublin was because Noel Coward (mr Bridger) was a tax exile and thus couldn't film in the uk.
52 years old this film is and Michael Caine seen here in this clip at 88 years old which is where he is now is retiring from acting So happy retirement Michael Caine
As first saw this as a seven year old boy and all I could remember were the Minis. The people were inconsequential 😂Those cars have a life of their own. Before they put me in a box I have to drive one.
Would happily stand corrected on this, but I believe the bus was the only Italian Job vehicle to survive filming. It was refitted with its seats and survived in the Scottish Highlands until the mid 90s.
The coach used is of course a Bedford VAL70 Harrington Legionnaire which was converted back to a coach after the film and I believe lived out its life in Scotland before sadly being scrapped. Pity it didn’t survive.
my first car in 1983 was a blue 68 mini, sliding windows similar to those in the films but not a Cooper, but it was close enough for me to my favourite film
always made me laugh this scene like 10x more effort than needed there is literally no traffic and no one around they could of just stopped the bloody bus and drove on it would of been quicker.
Wouldn’t be realistic. When you just swiped a few million in Bullion, under the noses of unregulated lunatics, you’re, to be honest, dumb levels of brave, to stop *at all,* until you’re as safe as you can get. Well, minus ‘blending in with traffic’, but you get the idea.
Don't know if anyone knows but if you listened to Talk Sport radio many years ago a presenter on there call Mike Dickin always used to say he was a stunt driver in one of the minis who did this scene and the sewer tunnels. Sadly he died about ten years ago.
This part filmed in neither Italy, Ireland, nor England, but a newly constructed yet unopened to the public autobahn in Germany. If you look closely you can see the other side is still under construction.
If I won the lottery I would happily pay however much it would cost to recreate this and drive the mini into the back of the coach, and it would be money well spent
@@paultaylor781 yes they did, but with stunt drivers, the inside bits of the cars with the actors was done againsts a green screen and if you watch carefully the white lines change.
Still one of the greatest films ever made
THE...
RIP Tony Beckley who played Camp Freddie.
A brilliant actor.
He also played Peter The Dutchman in Get Carter.
The minis where as mutch characters as the cast.
Totally.
The red Mini's license plate says HMP, ironic because Charlie Croker, who rode in the red Mini, did time at HMP Wormwood Scrubs.
Are You lot idiots?
100% Fiat offered the producers as many cars as they wanted if they used them for the heist. But they held firm and used British minis
I beg for its 50th anniversary which is next year in 2019, that the 1969 version comes back to the cinema for a week, cause I’ll be 100% watching it
It came true I watched it today!!

The “Ok, hang on.” from Tony gets me every time 🤣
I love the ‘Hurry up Dominic’ line from Michael Caine a bit earlier on too, so many great lines

Not much traffic on the motorway.
Still held up in Turin.

As advise goes, it's up there with, 'get the wheels in line'.
Music by Quincy Jones, who also composed "Soul Bossa Nova" aka the Austin Powers theme. Very groovy, baby!
