Continuous Backlash Compensation - Harmonic Drive's expertise in the field of elasto-mechanics of metals is applied to the internal gear of the HPN, HPG, HPGP and HPF Series to provide the gearhead with continuous backlash compensation.
Planetary gears have simultaneous meshing between the sun gear and planet gears and between the planet gears and the internal gear. Some manufacturers try to reduce the backlash of the gearhead by controlling the dimensional precision of the parts, however this causes interference of meshing parts due to dimensional errors, resulting in uneven input torque and noise. The backlash increases over time as gear wear takes place due to this interference. Harmonic Planetary® gears use a precision engineered elastic ring gear which compensates for interference between meshing parts. This proprietary Harmonic Planetary® gear design provides smooth and quiet motion and maintains ultra-low backlash for the life of the reducer.
You can create a high precision actuator by connecting any manufacturer's servomotor to our precision gearhead with our Quick Connect® coupling.

This particular demo is NOT a "Strain wave gearing", it's a two stage planetary gear train

Hi Gil, that's right, this is our HPGP 4-planet, planetary gearhead.

I personally prefer a "real gearing" mechanism over a "teeth compressing" reduction mechanism like Strain wave or Cycloidal drive or any other "new" derivatives of these and dealing the backlash with traditional methods.

@@lifter1000 I know with actual computing power backlash is easy to compensate, but "new" solutions are always improvement, what you say sounds like oldies saying I prefer manual than cnc 😅😅😅😅

Is the inner ring (ring gear ) flexible?
    Thanks.

Thanks for your question. The ring gear in the HPG / HPGP has a slight amount of radial compliance but remains torsionally rigid.

Stupid title.. this is NOT a harmonic drive but a planetary gearbox made by a company that was dumb enough to name them self after the first product they produced (they probably thought they were smart by doing that)..... So it's a planetary gearbox made by a company called harmonic drive... The same as if a company called them self Diesel motor and they started to produce electric motors

I think Harmonic Drive is a brand name...and what you are referring to is a strain wave drive system; systems they and other companies produce.
