Most people don't realize that Stevie played all the instruments on most of his early albums ... drums, guitar, bass, keyboards ... everything. An incredibly talented musician. (Brian McKnight is similarly talented, and played all the instruments on his debut album as well).
Man, this is beautiful! I always knew Stevie was a great musician but seeing how they set everything up so quickly, got him over there and the sound for the kit he was playing, and seeing that big smile on his face as he sat down and began playing... Stunning. Just stunning.
I went to Stevie’s live in Yokohama in 1982. This might be a video taken in some other city, probably Tokyo. I still remember he started saying “I think I wanna play drums”! His live went on for 2.5 hours, and from “Sir Duke”, non-stop hit songs medley. That was my first & best live experience. Thank you, Stevie!
Shout out to the road crew. Do you have any idea how much time they spend getting drums to sound good live. Within seconds these cats had a drum kit set up, for a blind man at that, miced up and ready to go. It was like those dudes in NASCAR when they make a pit stop.
So strange that people are getting so uptight in so many of these responses. Now how would Stevie feel about that? The man preaches love and peace. C'mon folks. Have a great day! Please and thank you.
@allanseeder Stevie plays piano, organ, synths, harspchord, accordian, harp, drums, percussion instruments, clavinet, bass guitar, guitar. It is said that he can play virtually any instrument!
@@Drummerboy-se8sl Yes, and you can also tell that he played the drums on both songs, because there is a unique sound to his drumming. You are welcome.
@sbaiar I thought he was playing over the bar line and coming back in on the two. Listen to the claps. But I do like the old black and white drum solo from back in the day better.
@yseduction06 oh please he totally knows... how could you say he doesnt? he's a master musician! many many many drummers (blind or not) play with the sticks backwards (for more volume)... sorry, this is the second time ive been compelled to comment on people laughing at the poor blind guy that 'doesnt know' his sticks are backwards. its kind of insulting. i know you mean well, but come on people!
He is a nightmare when he gets these ideas onstage and doesn't plan them with anyone. He goes off dancing and Calvin (the guy that helps him sit down) shits himself and runs on before Steve falls off the stage.
@sbaiar It seems most of the pianists I know are rather competent on drums. My former Guitarist Is a classically trained pianist and a damn good self-taught drummer as well.
@MrKilltastic umm it gives it a thicker timber.....many people it, especially latin jazz and reggae players since they do a lot of transitions between rim clicks, strikes and then back to hitting the drum head....and then there are just some people that prefer the feel of it(vinnie paul)
One of the best musician out there. One Who has not allowed his disability to bring him down. He is still standing on who is In God, to the music he loves and doing this w/o drugs and influence. So, what is our excuse?
@blakmagik4 - Actually I didn't know Stevie was a "drummer". Not all, but most of my exposure to drummers tend to come from the straight ahead jazz to jazz fusion side of things. So, if he has some fair notoriety to be qualified and coined as a "drummer", I never knew.
Set a metronome to his playing. Then, get back to me. He is off. His timing is terrible. Now, does it matter? No. Not at all. He is an amazing drummer as far as making up a groove. His drum parts are incredible. He is more talented than I will ever be. but, I can keep time better than him. So?
Erik Larson Where's your fucking video? Shut the fuck up, then. Btw, you need to gouge out your eyes first. That has nothing to do with him being blind. Seriously, though... you can see where drums are on any set before sitting down. He has to feel how the kit is set up or remember from previous set ups. If the drum tech changes just ONE thing, or if something is just SLIGHTLY off, that will mess up his timing. Fuck off, Loser.
And the groove thing... Stevie Wonder has plenty of groove - he proved that to the world in his first few years at Motown with "Fingertips." Then you've got "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" and "I Was Made to Love Her" and plenty of others - all before the guy was even 20 years old. But I highly doubt anyone would call the drum solo "groovy" if they only heard the solo and had no idea who it was. The point here, I think, was that he CAN PLAY the drums well. Not a textbook example of a groove.
@lukinigga I can see you don't play the drums - many great drummer play with the butt of the stick at the top namely, mike portnoy, dave grohl - not my favourite drummers, but still great, it's quite a common thing really
@BedRockBrutha ...Wow. Such a viceral response. Did I hit a nerve? I you blind too? Please track with me... I'm not saying drummers NEVER drop time. But I am saying that if you are taking a drum solo, and it's a relatively straight forward one at that, and you happen to be a semi to professional caliber drummer, you shouldn't be blatanly dropping time several times during your solo. Maybe it wasn't his kit, maybe it was a different setup, I don't know... It just wasn't that happening.
It sounds like they were riffing past Superstition. Because the bass line that Nate Watts is playing sounds alot like that, along with some of the backup synth play.
@Thellbro Like supathickinLA28 said... good drumming for a blind guy. Yes, I "do" music. I'm a professional jazz musician. No decent drummers should be accidentally dropping time... multiple times. It was neat he felt free enough to do that and have some fun, but that's about it... I'll say it again... Stevie SINGS his face off...
Its definitely the crowd, I mean drum solos by their very nature are dynamic and improvised so the crowd should have shut up and let Stevie do his thing lol
One of the greatest musicians... piano, drums, harmonica, singer, songwriter!! All this without his sight - Shhh I can't even whistle.
...and upon all Stevie whistles too-lol

Stevie is a genius. He played drums on his own tracks such as superstition, living for the city, higher ground, and more!
He's a genius
Yeah, his style is very distinct.
Love the drums on Knocks me off my feet. So distinct. He plays everything on that song
Man, this is beautiful! I always knew Stevie was a great musician but seeing how they set everything up so quickly, got him over there and the sound for the kit he was playing, and seeing that big smile on his face as he sat down and began playing... Stunning. Just stunning.
I never saw a blind man playing the drums. Yet my ideal Stevie jamming on the drums is so phenomenal to watch. I'm in awe of his talent.
just wow. thats amazing i've gained a new respect for stevie wonder defintley one of the greatest.
He knew EXACTLY what he was doing. He intended on going faster (hence the band cutting out).
Exactly. Stevie was showing out.
This is straight up musical genius. Man I'd love to see him in concert.
highly recommended, best concert of my life and I've seen many legends.

Stevie was just possessed of the drumming spirit!
Rock-on Stevie. Go on with your bad self!
I remember seeing this on TV! It was almost 30 years ago.
Thanks for uploading.
Stevie says he wants to play drums at 0.06 and they finish setting up the drum set at 1:46 . That's a fast setup.
I saw this on TV! And recorded it on a Beta tape but I didn't have a Beta player
so I could not see this performance for long. Thanks for uploading!
2:13 Ok so this guy is blind ..... it's just amazing even without seeing he feels the rhythm it's scary talent bro it's the god of the music
