In August 2009, I bought my iPod. It was a silver 120GB version of one of these. I was having a lot of anxiety attacks around that time, so I would listen to podcasts in bed at night as I fell asleep, except, I'd keep listening through the night until morning and then continue on with my commute. That was nearly 11 years ago, and my routine hasn't changed at all. My iPod has broken and fixed itself so many times it's hard to count. The screen got a ton of dead pixels and then they came back to life again. Three out of the four corners are squared off and no longer fully round because of how many times I've dropped it. There were days when it wouldn't turn on or sync properly, and I'd go eBay hunting for a replacement, only for the old girl to revive herself before I would ever place an order. The back case is so scratched up that it looks like it has the same brushed metal finish as the front. It's been 11 years and my routine hasn't changed. My routine hasn't changed in 11 years. I've never quite figured out how to sleep, but I get so much comfort from my iPod on the nights when I can't. I calculated at one point and I've easily gotten more than 20,000 hours of use out of this without a single repair or modification. One of the songs on it is back from that period, same week I got it, I saw this artist perform in Dublin. His name was Spoonboy and one of his lyrics is "To be invincible, all you've gotta do is stay alive" and that's been my iPod's motto from the very start. It's been the only thing in my life that has been there for me no matter what, and it seems dumb to put that much value in an object, but who cares. Humans are dumb. I love my iPod.
I like the way these things look and feel, but I'm less a fan of the way the sharp metal corners will dig holes through the fabric of your pockets after a few months
I'm in Canada and I just got a iPod 6th (80gb) version used for $80... I figure if anything breaks, at least I got it cheap enough to justify spending the money to fix it lol... Also, my kids can make use of it to watch movies on it lmao. These things are tanks.
i used to have one of these, i think i still got the guts of it somewhere, but youre right, these are the biggest pain to get into, and theyre definitely slower due to the harddrive, i never got around to fixing it but i do miss it
I have an iPod 4th gen 30gb that I haven’t modded because I just haven’t needed too. All my music still fits and the hard drive is still good so 🤷♀️. Taking solace in the fact that it will be easy to open if and when the hard drive conks out
Mine is in perfect condition not a single scratch and I was debating buying a fifth gen to use and keep this one in good condition but eh whatever I’m just going to open my 7th gen and replace the battery even if it scratches
these were the first ipods i remember seeing so i like them a lot. i think theyre pretty iconic time capsules of the 2000s. But these definitely came out right before the total decline of the original ipods. like by 2010 i never saw any ads for them, anyone using them, by then the smartphone became mainstream and iphone had the music app. i mean the ipod touch 4 came out at the end of that year and why wouldnt you get one of those instead if you didnt have iphone money?
I just got one of these, and i can agree they kinda suck. But my 5th gen's screen got obliterated while moving. And my 4th gen has a bad battery, so i have to deal with it
When I was in highschool I had a black 120gb iPod Classic 6th gen (1st revision). It was such an amazing music player. I remember using plastic clean tape to protect the backplate from scratches. I even had 2 silicon cases. But one time I dropped it and the HDD suffered some damage, whenever I reached 55GB of used space it freezed, so I had to avoid getting to that point. I sold it and then got my first Android phone in 2010.

Oh hey I love spoonboy! I haven’t listened to him for years, I’m definitely gonna go back to his music
@@glutenfreeguy104 I did not expect to encounter another Spoonboy fan here of all places. Heck yeah!
This is genuinely wholesome, thank you for sharing :)

I just made a custom leather sheath for mine. Solves that issue

I love binging a whole new slew of dank videos.

I had a 5th gen and a 6th gen. I much preferred the 6th gen because the face of the 5th gen was a fingerprint and scratch magnet.
Dankpods! You're The Best!
it's funny seeing the talk of how excited he is about upgrading the 1tb ipod, knowing its fate
You know, dankpods' videos always help me feel less shit
I like these after shows, they’re so good!

Ive had an 80gb 6th gen in a drawer that I wanna repurpose as an audiobook player at some point.
Would fix the battery on my 7th gen but it’s hard to open and I’m not risking it not gonna find a £20 classic anytime soon.

i simply love those, don't find them clunky or fiddly or nothin', especially the 7th gen that have bluetooth /(4.0.) but still...
idk why but something about you constantly turning the ipod just a smidge really grinds my gears
I had a 160GB ipod gen 6 and hated it because they changed the sound chip from Wolfson in this generation. All my music sounded tinny.
