  • Movie review of the 2018 Hindi film Zero, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif - by Melanie on Pardesi.
Zero is a 2018 Indian Hindi-language romantic drama film, written by Himanshu Sharma and directed by Aanand L. Rai. It was jointly produced by Colour Yellow Productions and Red Chillies Entertainment's Gauri Khan, and stars Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif. It follows Bauua Singh, a short man from Meerut who, after having difficulty finding a marriage partner, finds a companion in Aafia Bhinder, a NASA scientist with cerebral palsy. However, leading superstar Babita also gets close with him, testing his first relationship. This love triangle takes them to far-off cities, and thrusts Bauua on an adventure to discover both his true love and completeness in a life lived to the fullest.
Produced on an budget of ₹200 crore (US$28 million), Zero is Khan's most expensive film. The film was conceived by Rai in 2012, after he was inspired by the superhero genre. Pre-production began in 2016. Initially having a working title of Katrina Meri Jaan, Zero went through numerous title changes before arriving at the final title in early 2018. Principal photography of the film began in Mumbai on May 2017. It marked the last film appearance of Sridevi, who died shortly after completing the film. Filming concluded in 2018 at Orlando. The film's soundtrack is composed by Ajay-Atul with lyrics written by Irshad Kamil, under the label T-Series.
It was released on 21 December 2018, to mixed reviews from critics. Critics particularly praised the film's visual effects and the performance of Khan, but the screenplay was criticised for its inconsistency. It earned ₹20.14 crore nett in India on its first day.

Totally agree - you nailed all the points that left me exacerbated! The star of the film is Katrina - never thought I would say that - they always treat her like a
“dancer” & “eye candy” - producers/ directors take notice - she can be so much more! I can watch an entire film around the bath tub scene!

Wasn't her performance a revelation?! I think she needs her own action movie -- that one scene in Tiger Zinda Hai was so kick ass!

Sad to say but I think Shahrukh Khan does not look like he’s aging well and the fact that he’s been a chain smoker all is life is starting to show as well. He needs to start playing father type roles

Melanie, I absolutely hated ZERO. I know a lot of people said the first half was good , but the movie simply didn't work for me from the get go, because Srk's character didn't come across as a real person. I couldn't empathise with him or relate to what Anushka saw in him and that's crucial for a love story. Nothing made any sense in this film. The only plus point was the picturisation of Mera Naam Tu. I walked out of the film long before the climax. The only other film I walked out of in my recent memory was - Jab Harry Met Sejal. I think SRK should steer clear of romantic roles for a while (and I'm someone who loved him Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti I'm). Sigh...

As a Shahrukh Khan fan, its a very very disappointing film. I was feeling that, they tried to make something good and result came zero. Shahrukh Khan was extraordinary in this film. Im feeling sad for this man, he is trying hard last few yeras, but result not coming.

  • @shaunizzkool

I actually like the film but I don’t love it. Being a die heart SRK fam since the the first film I ever saw which was Kuch Kuch Hota Hai at 6 yrs old these past few films have been disappointing. Zero has great music a stellar cast. Dozens of A list cameos but it’s the flawed writing that makes it just plain OK.
Zero is like 3 different films wrapped up into one and it feels at one point even the film itself is confused about what direction to go in. SRK is good but the second half especially the whole sad song roaming through the city was so not needed. Anushka performance was great but she doesn’t pull it off well playing someone who has cerebral palsy. I feel Priyanka would have knocked if out the park. I noticed in some scenes Anushka almost broke character. Anushka is a great actress but it seems with most characters she plays it one dimensionally and almost all her characters looks similar. The stand out of the film was definitely Katrina and that was a surprise. A very please surprise too. She did such a great job there was so much depth with her character that I wish Anushka had.
ANYWAYS I rather watch a film based on Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif Characters alone. A woman who doesn’t let her disabilities stop her from being independent and successful and another woman who overcomes her weakness and learn she doesn’t need someone to feel good and prevails. With all that being said I noticed directors/writers have a Khan in their film they feel they have to go all out and make a larger than life type of movie. That ship has been set sail and long gone it isn’t the 90s or early 2000s anymore Dear Zindagi was such a refreshing movie to see SRK doing something entirely different. We don’t need every movie to be larger than life we just want a good story with heart like you said ❤️

shaunizzkool The song Tanha Hua was in the movie because he finally realized he made a mistake, that’s why there was scenes where he was watching other couples together, and once he made his big breath, he realized that he was became a literal zero, and god gave him a second chance, that’s why he started dancing on the streets. I believe it’s the expressions that makes this movie so unique for me, cause you see a story in every expression that everyone makes in Zero

    • @shaunizzkool
      @shaunizzkool 5 ปีที่แล้ว

TheMasud2002 I totally get that. I really do. It’s like a bunch of scenes were cut off. You don’t really feel for his character during that song at least a lot of ppl and myself didn’t really feel much. I really liked the film but I have to be honest as true SRK fan there hasn’t been a film since probably JTHJ that I would call one of my favorites. Dear Zindagi was different though and I prefer Raaes and Chennai Expresss over Dilwale and HNY. Hope he focus on choosing better scripts. The way they written Anushkas character though..that was sad. Being able to pull out a gun especially in a type of building that would definitely have metal detectors and shooting at SRK and not having to face any charges in the film blows my mind. What also blows my mind is the cringy scene where she scoots her chair down to NASR or as we call NASA and makes it just in time to chat with him via computer. Through out the second half her character hates him so much she even wishes he doesn’t come back to earth and dies and the next second realizing her love for him. There wasn’t any real realization there. The amount of heart and soul the film had in the first half. It’s not there in the second half and isn’t believable at all especially with the whole Anti gravity room which doesn’t exist but if it did why is he but instead training in a pool. I’m so mixed on Zero. I really want to love it but I love it only in parts.

The first half was good, yeah there were some illogical sequences but all in all, the first half had a lot of heart and humor in it. So I liked it. But the second half got so out of hand. The only good thing about the second half was Katrina Kaif’s amazing acting.

@@PardesiReviews I know, she blew it away! People will probably think all this praise for her from the critics is an exaggeration but she really was on-point and so in-element. So she deserves it. Anushka kinda disappointed me though, I was expecting something like Kalki Koechlin in Margarita with a Straw.

I think the folks that watch Bollywood are finally starting to stand up and take notice and want to watch movies with quality scripts like Andhadhun and Badhai Ho rather than star driven movies like this one and race 3 type of movies. The fact that this movie has bombed at the box office is a testament to that. The Bollywood producers and directors need to start looking at its neighbor down south to the Malayalam movie industry where the script is king nd it’s not about the visual effects and star driven.
