Funny - closing the barn door after the horse is gone - just looking at images of the actual gusset plate before failure in the Minnesota bridge failure case clearly showed buckling - and the adjacent strain gauge rossette (mounted on a thicker member - why didn't the ME see the deformed plate!) clearly not effective.

the system used was the Vic-3D system from Correlated Solutions, Inc.
It'll be interesting how this experiment will play out and what effect it will have bridge construction into the future.
