You do not know how much of an impact this video has had on my application writing. Using this method, I realised I had a lot more to offer and that in previous application cycles, I just undersold myself. Really Really grateful for this.
Great, advice I am currently applying for a master for the IPLS in Belfast and I have been struggling to put my thoughts into words in this regard. I can't simply say I want to practice tech and IP law . Working in retail over two six-month peroids has allowed me to develop a commercially oriented minset, but I am nervous being a milk-man wouldn't be considered relevent.
Hi Idin, this video is so well done & insightful, thank you for putting out such great content! This is by far the best walkthrough of the 'why commercial law' question. Keep up the good work!
Hello Idin, thank you so much for the helpful video! I am in my first year of post-grad law degree, previously I worked in the public policy field and am now looking to switch to commercial law. I was just wondering do you have any advice in presenting my interest in a being a commercial lawyer, despite not having any direct business/corporate related experience? Thank you!
@@IdinSabahipoureeeeek!! Update: I used this format and GUESS WHO GOT AN INTERVIEW???? this girl☺️🥺thank you, Idin❤ interestingly, it’s for a mini-pupillage. I’m actually an aspiring barrister, but your videos remain a lifesaver.🎉
@@onyi__ That's AWESOME! I'm so glad to hear you've managed that :D (and who knew I was helping aspiring barristers too) Hope you smash the interview (check out my 'watch this before an assessment centre' video for my advice to you pre-interview)!
@@IdinSabahipour 'Tell us about a project you have recently worked on or a challenge you have faced as part of a team. Do they expect you to link back to the firm? Thanks!
@@rebeccawillis7313 Ahhhh, maybe I should do a video on competency questions in general. I wouldn't say you would have to link to the firm specifically. Maybe you'd be able to link the competency shown to the qualities needed during the training contract more generally. I'll add this topic to my list anyway!
Hi Idin, thanks for your brilliant and useful videos! if it's not too late, could you maybe do a vid on how to answer the "what is your greatest achievement question"? I really struggle in answering this. Thanks in advance
Great content thank you. I have an interview coming up and I was wondering how would you structure an answer for "tell us about a recent case that has caught your interest?" or something along those lines.
Hey Shah! Thanks for the comment. For something like that, the way I'd approach it is: (1) Outline the case in a sentence or two, to say what is happening (e.g. Company X bought Company Y); (2) Why it interested you (e.g. Indicative of a wider trend of similar acquisitions); (3) Link to the firm as far as possible (e.g. How could the firm you're interviewing at respond to the wider trend mentioned in point 2?) This isn't a framework that fits every news story but generally, if you pick a story that can relate to the firm in some way, it'll give you more opportunity to talk in more depth and show your understanding of the firm which is really good. Good link in the interview 🤞
This is so brilliant. I have scoured the internet for examples because I had no idea how to write this. Do you have any tips for someone who already has had one year of legal training (in another country)? It almost seems like a chicken and egg situation where I've ALREADY trained for a year, but now I'm applying for a training contract in the UK, and I have to act like I haven't started my career yet.
Hey @Pokadoodledoo! Thanks so much for the kind words. To be honest, I can't imagine how having past legal work experience isn't going to be helpful for an app now. It's usually a good way to show that you understand what the role is. But maybe I've not fully understood the situation. Send me a message on IG (@idinsabahipour) if you want to chat about it.
@@IdinSabahipour I was just Working on this question, so this was really helpful as it was not packed with legal experience examples, and there was a clear structure, 🙏🏻
Hi Idin. Really great video. Just a question, should we write about open days/insight days we attended with other firms (and not the one we're applying to) in our 'why commercial law' question? Would that backfire?
Hi Natasha! Thanks for the comment - I'm glad you found it useful. I'd say you definitely should! At such an early stage in your career, a firm would expect that you'd looked at different law firms. It would, in my opinion, look good to see you've shown an interest in the career as a whole. Just make sure you can take those 'general' commercial things you've learnt from other experiences and make them relevant to the 'specific' firm you're applying to. Hope that helps!
Hey Kat! I think it depends on if the question is using "corporate law" as a synonym for commercial law or if its actually referring to the "corporate practice area". For the first type of scenario, I think it's okay. For the second though, I'd focus more on talking about corporate work or mergers, acquisitions etc. that demonstrate your interest in corporate. I know that's a wishy-washy answer, but I hope that helps!
Thank you idin this video is great I like and subscribed it. Please I have a question if you could do a video on how to find out that a particular law firm is different from it's competitors I am planning to apply to Charles Russel speechly, MacFarlane, farrer band co, and withers worldwide they all look the same known for its private client high net worth individual same seat structure , pro Bono diversity inclusion. So if they ask how they are different from it's competitors what would be answer. If you could a video or answer me here I would be grateful. Also, maybe you should do video on Watson Glaser critical thinking test. Thanks regards Hamid.
Hey Hamid! Thanks for this. I'm definitely going to do a video on Watson Glaser tests. About telling the difference between firms, that's definitely a challenge. Did you see the video I made on how to research law firms? That might help you out with that!
