  • The Watson Glaser test... Law firms seem to love it but applicants often find it difficult to navigate this step in the application process.
    For those of you who don't know, Watson Glaser is an online test that usually lasts around 30-40 minutes. It assesses your "critical thinking" which, in this case, means your ability to logically and rationally consider information that's presented to you.
    The questions in the test fall into 5 different categories:
    1. Inferences
    2. Recognising assumptions
    3. Deduction
    4. Interpretation
    5. Evaluating arguments
    There's no secret trick to passing the Watson Glaser test. But, I think that the key to performing well is to really understand what these similar-sounding (but very different) categories mean.
    In this video, I go over how I would suggest approaching each stage of the test to give yourself the best chance of getting getting through it!
    I hope this video will help you out in your applications! Use the comments section to let me know your thoughts and what topics you want me to cover in the future.

    Thankyou for this clear explanation, I definitely feel more prepared to do more practice tests with these methods. I'm planning on applying for vacation schemes and training contracts soon!
    Just a suggestion, I wonder if you could perhaps do a similar video on the general psychometric tests (numerical, verbal reasoning) as some law firms also use this method of assessment (although Watson Glaser is definitely the more popular one)

    Hi Idin, thank you for the video. It is great but I have one question. You mention @10:00 for deductions that "you could try to come up with a counter example that disproves the conclusion". Can you provide an example of when coming up with a counter example that would disprove that there are clear days that are boring?

    • @IdinSabahipour
      @IdinSabahipour  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey James!
      I didn't make that so clear in the video, so thanks for asking that.
      In the example at 10:08 we're given the statement that (1) some Sundays are rainy and (2) all rainy days are boring.
      So, let's take those both as a fact, as you're meant to do for this section.
      Following from that, some days of the week could be clear, right? We're only told that *some Sundays* are rainy.
      So, on a clear day, we're not given a rule as to whether it's boring or not. So you could say that on a random Tuesday, it might be (1) a clear day and (2) it might be boring anyway.
      So that's a counterexample that you've come up with, while following the statement, that goes against the conclusion.
      Therefore the conclusion doesn't *necessarily follow* from the rule.
      I hope that helps!

    11:23 My interpretation was that it does not follow considering all the children in study within the range of 8 months to 6 years. We don't know whether the older children learned to talk by the age of 6 months. The conclusion is quite ambiguous.

    • @IdinSabahipour
      @IdinSabahipour  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree that its not 100% stated that the children did not know how to talk at 6 months. But the important term here is the standard of "beyond a reasonable doubt"... So it doesn't have to be 100% certain for you to be able to conclude that it "follows".
      The statement tells us that at 8 months old, the children had a vocabulary of 0 words (so, didn't know how to talk. Based on this, it seems to follow that at 6 months (2 months before) they also did not know how to talk. That's why the "conclusion follows" here. The alternative would be to argue that the children spoke some words at 6 months but then lost that ability by 8 months of age before rebuilding it. I think this would be considered too improbable to be the answer.
      I hope that helped! ☺

    Hi Idin, may I ask how long after completing the Watson Glaser do I have to wait to hear if I have passed or failed and whether I will proceed to the next round usually? (mine is from Hogan Lovells)

    • @IdinSabahipour

      Hey Amanada!
      This really depends on the firm. From my experience they tend to be quicker with good news than bad. But I've been accepted before after 2+ weeks wait. So it's not always a hard and fast rule!
      Sorry - That's not a clear answer. But I think it just depends.
      I'd suggest that once you have done it, try to forget about it for now. If you're through to AC, there'll be time to prepare after you've been informed!
