Favorite Bruce Lee line in the movie Enter The Dragon when the bully on the ship challenges him to a fight, and Bruce says sure, but not here, and points to a nearby island, and the man agrees. He helps the meathead into a smaller boat, then unties the rope, and the guy drifts away. He the says, "That's the art of fighting without fighting". Brilliant! Very ninja of him.

Candace Lin Bruce Lee´s water metaphor basically means that you should manage to adapt yourself to every situation and fluid with it in a proactive way. Now, speaking specifically in a combat context, you shouldn´t be rigid and limit yourself to a certain way of techniques and "style" but instead you should go with the battle´s flow in order to overcome it, having a "No limit as a limit" mindset which makes you unpredictable hence more effective in a fight (And in life, overall). Of course you can be skillful and rely on what you have trained in, if that works for you, but always be open to many learning dynamics and experiences. Don´t get stuck with what your teacher, dojo master or whatever teaches you, go beyond that by yourself and learn by yourself. Water has no limits... Take Bruce´s wise quote as a philosophy of life.
I´ve learnt more from Bruce Lee than from Jesus Christ.

He was already crazy skilled to begin with, too fast for cameras, and insanely strong asf but if Bruce Lee was still around and was able to train more and also train at a legit MMA camp while in UFC and better his already impressive stand up, have great wrestling and better his ground game he'd pretty much wreck just about everyone with only a VERY few being able to give him a challenge and have a possibility of beating him.

When people say he wouldn't survive UFC, it's really quite silly because you're imagining you'd pluck Bruce Lee out of history, and place him in a ring. When in reality, if he was born in this era, he'd train like any other UFC fighter and use whatever suits his style, he'd have the same nutrition awareness, the same modern training regimes, the same sparring routines, as any other modern fighters, so no, he wouldn't get destroyed, but he also wouldn't necessarily be peerless and own everyone, he'd just be another fighter, how good he might be is entirely speculative, maybe he could pull a Pacquiao and move through the most weight divisions but in UFC instead of boxing, he'd certainly have the determination to be great, and the showmanship to be an entertaining fighter, although I can't quite imagine him throwing bottles around at press conferences like a dickhead.
All of that is missing the point of Bruce Lee, what sets him apart from everyone else wasn't his ability to kick sandbags around or his unverified street fights against goons, but his reform of Chinese martial arts and essentially destroying the mysticism that surrounds Kung Fu with something the resembles the scientific method. He also helped formulate the idea of mixed martial arts, so if plucking him out of history and have him lose a fight against a modern fighter means anything, then so does saying the Wright brothers sucked because modern planes would be better than theirs, it's irrelevant.

Yausing Chan It`s a promotion thing, they used to build up stars like Hulk Hogan, he shaped wrestling into a big industry so he had to win all his matches in his prime or his star would have faded, that`s how matches were decided, the biggest star always won. The person who could beat Hogan near his prime was the Ultimate Warrior because he was seen as the successor to the aging Hogan. If they had a real match it would look pathetic, they are not real wrestlers, they are more like stunt men!

Step behind side kick is definitely the most underestimated kick in mma. You wanna knock someone back like 20 feet or break some ribs? That kick is great. I wish more mma instructors would emphasize it.
True, it is a powerful kick, but when you step into it, you automatically telegraph it and it is easy to evade. However, if it's used as a counter attack (stop hit), then it can land so much easier. As your opponent blindly charges at you, he only has 'attack' on his mind, so as he is rushes in, you fire the kick out and it intercepts him in his tracks.
Xenon That's true. Like any technique, it's far from perfect. It is best used as an intercepting kick, but to be fair, that's true for a lot of kicks. As for the issue of telegraph, it does, but really only so much if you're used to seeing and countering it. In my opinion, step behind / skip side kick still doesn't telegraph as much as back leg round kicks -- which is probably the most popular kick in modernized martial arts. That kick is really more about angles and best used as low kicks for the most part. Lead leg front kicks are pretty good for limiting telegraph, and being a good stop kick, but they just don't have nearly as much force or accuracy as proper side kicks.
I honestly wouldn't say the step telegraph is even the biggest weakness of the step side kick. I'd say it's the pivot chamber being a gamble that happens before you even throw the kick. If the kick is parried on the calf in close, you can leave the kicker's back really exposed turning their motion that prepares the kick against the kicker.
Still all that said, it has a lot of power, great reach, surprisingly accurate, and is a harder to catch than many people would think compared to round kicks and front kicks.
Some really good points :) A little OT here, but I prefer to fight from long range as much as possible. The reason being (as you prob know), the further your opponent is from you, he has to move to you to attack you, which then opens him up to an interception. Also, the further he is away, your neurological / limbic system have more time to read / react to his moves. When it gets up close, that's when your brain has less time to react to a flurry of fast non-telegraphic punches / kicks, and this is generally why all fights - up close - end up a sloppy trade off (until someone lands a lucky punch) or ends up a grappling fest on the ground. Let him make the mistake of moving in, stop hit him, then immediately shift back into long range. I also watched a YT vid of some little Turkish guy fighting 4 attackers from long range. because he kept his distance, none of them could reach him and attack him from blind angles, and all of them ran into a stop hit and got KO'd in seconds.

I can definitely relate to that. Range is a main reason soldiers use guns today instead of swords, spears, and bows. One of the big things I mention to young martial artist when I teach them is that a real fight is going to be much more fast pace than the sparring they're used to. Sometimes reflexes only take us so far, but it definitely is easier to react to things that are farther away and also don't stress our peripheral vision as much. I'm also a bit more biased towards ranged fighting myself since my first martial art was Taekwondo, and that has a major influence on the MMA that I practice now. That said, I believe it always pays to be a well balanced martial artist whether it's long range to close range, flexibility to strength, strikes to grappling, 1 on 1 to fighting multiple opponents, in the ring to the street, or empty hand to weapons. My motto is it's better to be a jack of all trades than a master of 1. Even if you don't like a particular martial art system, at least you will have learned its weakness if it is used against you.
Yep, I do agree with all you said, and it shows that you are obviously a dedicated martial scientist. It's just that studying so many fights on YT, when someone fires a sucker punch from close range, it lands in a split second. I'm like, 'Damn, how the hell would you have the reaction time to block or evade that unless your hands were already up?' This is why I thought about the 'open palm' technique they use in the security industry (you might be familiar with it)... if someone approaches you in a verbally threatening manner, you put your hands up and face your palms towards them as if you are surrendering / negotiating, in a sort of, 'There, there, calm down, I don't want to fight' position. But what you're really doing is, you have your hands up to: keep him from invading your personal space any further; to block any punch; and to fire a non-telegraphic shot straight into his face if he wont negotiate a truce. The added benefit of this is, he thinks this means you're not going to fight, so he wont be prepared for a stop hit if he thinks you're a sitting duck.

Watsup shane! I've always loved these series and I've recently started taking Muay Thai and Euro style Kickboxing classes on a regular basis and came across Samart Payakaroon. By what i'm gathering, this man was an Ali or Fedor of MT and he's a genius. Superb fighting IQ and blending of muay thai and boxing. Seeing as that is right up your ally , i'd love to see a Fight Like Samart!

I tried the lop sao on one of my friends, and when he threw the first punch for me to block, I came half an inch from his ear. Extending fully, and I would have popped his ear drum. It WORKS!!! My favorite technique shown on the video is the scissor kick!

unless you're blessed with incredible catlike reflexes, timing, and explosive power you arent gonna be able to fight like him.

Hard to say. Roy was bigger but Lee sparred with sammo hung, chuck norris and other big guys. If i recall correctly Lee won a high school boxing tournament and theres footage of him sparring with head gear so he definitely knew how to handle himself in a boxing match.
Still, the fight would ideally be at middleweight ir a catchweight of 150 since Bruce rarely weighed more than a welterweight until late in life.
Bruce advantages:
-studied multiple arts
-kicks (low attacks are a big weakness of orthodox boxers)
-smaller target and very elusive which would make it harder to land a clean hit
-had a solid ground game having studied jiu jitsu and trained with the gracies.
Disadvantage:
-short reach and height
-less hands on professional experience.
Roy advantages:
-highly explosive power
-height
-wild unorthodox style that was hard to predict and counter
-possibly better stamina since he could go 12 rounds
Disadvantage:
-glass jaw
-no ground game
On paper it looks like bruce's best option would be to either stay outside roy's range and harass him with low kicks, pokes, and be an elusive target. Or he could try to blitz and get inside for takedowns and use his ground game. Roy's reach, footwork, and speed would make either strategy difficult though but bruce had frightening coiled up power and roy didnt have the best chin so he'd always have a punchers chance.
I think 6 times out of 10 Roy wins a decision or stops bruce late because he himself was also very hard to hit and could adjust to his opponent's pattern and style. As long as he avoids getting to the ground and plays it safe without being too cocky he could take it.

great video on the legend & most influential martial artist of all time Shane :). i been waiting on ag fightlike video of Bruce Lee. I'm a huge fan & he one of my idols & I noticed the scissor kick sweep is a good way to immediately get a leg lock submission.

I'd say about 90% of this is inaccurate. for example, lop sao is not interception, it's trapping. the technique fir the one inch punch was wrong. the side kick wad wrong. this guy definately is a traditional martial artist. he definately did not take the time to properly understand jkd. still, nice video

Lop sau is basically hand trapping and the side kick he demonstrated looked like it needed some work on the form.

I don't want to be negative, but there's a big difference between what Bruce demonstrated in his films and JKD.
Jack Anderson Depends on which film as they were shot at different parts of his life and with different amounts of his input. The bigger a star he became, the more influence he had on the filmmaking, of course. The one where he fights Chuck Norris is the first one that starts encompassing his fighting philosophies. He said as much in an interview. He's losing to Norris using classical kung fu until he sheds the classical mess and we see the beginnings of jkd and thereby he defeats Norris.
