@@metalplasticelectronics354 maybe i didnt follow your video well enough but it sounded like you did try the recovery before you openned it and then the recovery worked after you probed around. its possible there was a stray solder blob shorting something and it fell off when you handled the board. it would explain how it passed a factory test which they may do before putting the board in the case
If you had no problem, unboxing would have been very boring. This is how an interesting unboxing is done and many pointless information are uploaded on youtube. 🤦🤦🤦

So far the PICkit5 has done everything my ICD 4 does. Microchip kinda priced me out of the ICD5. I would say the PICkit5 is better than my ICD3, it's definitely faster than the ICD3. I'm sure the ICD5 has some advantages. I'd pay $100 extra for the LAN port, but not 300.
Well done , congrats ! i had the same case , but with mplab snap , honestly i bought my on the secondary market in mint condition ! When i connected it to my computer (apple m1) , mplab saw it , but snap simply didn't work ... and yes emergency recovery , as described in manual , and it works ... a few weeks later i connected snap to my lenovo thinkpad , immediately i had notification from microchip studio , some new update for the snap , want to update? i press yes , and that's all , works perfect ! Planning to buy pickit5 to have access to all families of microcontrollers from microchip !
All tools for electronics, CAD, etc are made for Windows, because Windows rules the world with a 90% market share. Maybe you should try a Windows machine instead of Mac?
so i have never used a pickit device before, i do auto electronics, i have a pic18f458 processor that i want to retrieve the information from. can the pickit read processor?
The Pickit5 can read the PIC18F458 if the code protection bit or bits are not set. If it's a commercial item you want to read out the program from, there's little chance that the code protection isn't set

If it's not read-protected. I don't think there is any write protection, I'm pretty sure you can always erase a device. MplabX can read a device so you can view the memory and registers from the program or it can read the device to a hex file.
Does this include everything needed to start programming pic chips? Looking to upgrade from a TL866++ programmer. Thanks in advance and have a good day!
You will need to make or buy a cable that will connect to the 8 pin header on the PICKit5. The other end can be anything you want to connect to the board the processor you are programming in on. I’m a big fan of the Tag-Connect but they are a bit expensive. Other than that and download the software it’s ready to go.
Does the PicKit5 have the same issue as the PicKit4 with older 16F controllers - adding a 100 Ohms resistor in the Vpp line preventing them from dying?
I'm surprised they came out with a new programmer already, I may just skip the Pickit 4 and eventually get the Pickit 5 if it drops in price. Though I feel I wouldn't be utilizing the PTG, SD card and Bluetooth + their App at all. However, the USB-C connector is a plus.
I don’t have a PICkit 4 to compare to but it looks like about the only difference is the switch to USB C connector. And the price went up a few dollars. I remember I paid about $200 for the ICD3. Then the ICD4 came out at I think it was $250. I though I would wait and after the ICD3 were gone the ICD4 would drop in price. Just the opposite, after the ICD3 were gone the price of the ICD4 went up. Think I end of paying close to $300 for it. After the fact I figured I would have been better off just to get the PICkit 4.
i recently bought a pickit 5 and have had no issues with it.
I haven't had any more problems with mine. I still don't know what was causing the problem.

Caution! When usb disconnected, the VDD pin is nearly short circuited to GND. This may damage the programmer.
I still have an old parallel port programmer kit from them. Maybe time to update...
I still have my Atmel STK500. I think I threw away my PICStart Plus a few years ago. Hard to scale back in space, I do regret tossing it now.
I just got one, it did not work at first, lots of hoop jumping herky jerky and finally it started working. Same problem, it was not seen by MPLAB-X
Did you take yours apart to get it to start working? I still don't know why it wasn't seen on the USB bus till I took mine apart.

Shows a direct connection in the user manual. For what that is worth.
