Are Invisibility Cloaks Possible?

  • This week Reactions is taking a look to see if science and chemistry could make invisibility cloaks possible. Have you ever wished you could hide under an invisibility cloak like Harry Potter or conceal your car with a Klingon cloaking device like in Star Trek? In a special bonus episode of Reactions, we celebrate the International Year of Light by exploring the science behind light, sight and invisibility. Though we can’t make ourselves invisible yet, some promising research may light the way - or rather, bend the light away.
    This episode of Reactions was produced in collaboration with the journal ACS Photonics. For more information on ACS Photonics, please visit: pubs.acs.org/journal/apchd5. Additional information on the International Year of Light can be found at: www.light2015.org.

    Chameleons change their colour and texture to communicate their moods or to absorb more heat from light. Not for camouflage

      ciucinciu Chameleons change their skin color for all three: for social purposes (mood signaling, in response to other chameleons, in response to threat), for practical purposes (in response to temperature changes) as well as for survival purposes (camouflage; look up the Smith's dwarf chameleon as an example). It should be noted that different chameleons change their colors for different reasons (some don't even change colors), and will have different ranges of colors they utilize.

      Alison L I looked it up, and you're right. It was a dogmatic knee-jerk reaction. I usually associate color change for camouflage with green anoles.

    Actually chameleons don't match colors around them, they change color to regulate their temperatures or to signal their intentions, so we can't talk about camouflage there

    I have a question, if say one achieves invisibility with light bending, is someone shines some very bright external light around the area, would that disrupt the invisibility? Like create shadows of the person?

  • @mattwaffle2653
    @mattwaffle2653 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Haven't watched the video yet but correct me if I'm wrong but I think they are possible cause you could put on a suit and the suit could take a picture of what's behind you and put it on the suit and display it at the front so it's kind of an invisible cloak it will need to take pictures immensely fast especially the displaying part even faster.

    would it be possible to create invisibility on a desired object by using frequencies to trick the human mind into believing that there is nothing where the object is Turing it invisible

  • @hawaiiman33
    @hawaiiman33 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Invisibility is actually a natural capability for nonhuman where they can refract light and envelope themselves in it, turning them invisible or they will look like the predators cloaking field where you can still see them if they shift their body’s

    i remember reading up on this , so far we have like 6 or 7 cloaking methods, there was one that used magnets to make a mirage around its self, the only problem was you would not be able to see out word either

      yes, it does look like a heat mirage.. like the craft appears like is in a heat mirage (black triangle) the invisible is not 100% more like 60% complete.
