I love this video - soooo many good books that I've already read (Life After Life), ones that I really want to read (especially Bridsong and In Memoriam) and ones I've never heard of but want to read (Remote Sympathy). Thank you for the recommendations. In terms of books I can recommend, A Woman in Berlin by Anonymous is fantastic x
Loved most of these recommendations, my favourite book this year so far is In Memorium. One book I thought worth a mention, it is a children’s book and it Is Goodnight Mr Tom
Hi! So happy YT recommended your video as I also love historical fiction novels set in the same time period. Thank you for sharing your recommendations! Some of the books you mentioned I haven’t heard or read so I look forward to checking them out! Thanks again!
Fantastic recommendations, Sarah! I really really need to get to some Catherine Chidgy at some point soon. I read Hinterland by Arno Geiger last year and really liked it. It is set during world war ll ...i think in Austria and is about a young German soldier who has been sent to a lakeside village to recouperate after a traumatic event on the frontline. It is translated from German.
@@tatianakostrzewa8073 thank you. If you have any recommendations for Polish books that have been translated, let me know, doesn't just have to be WW fiction 😊 I'd love to visit Poland, and to watch some speedway while I'm there!
I might have to steal this idea because I love war books too. I've only read the Waters, Atkinson, Faulks, and Zuzak but enjoyed them all, especially Birdsong. You should read Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, it's an incredible story about a Japanese POW, its non-fiction. I really want to try Morpurgo, he sounds interesting. All Quiet on the Western Front would be my main fiction recommendation if you haven't read that.
@@AaronReadABook i read and loved Unbroken - I was going to talk about it but don't know where my copy of it has gone!! I did have all quiet on the western front but my brother borrowed it and never gave it back. Yes by all means do the same 😊
I loved the Richard Flanagan and don’t think I knew that about your Grandad Sarah, that must have made it a much tougher read. I also really enjoyed Night Watch, Life After Life and Suite Francaise and although I haven’t read War Horse, I really enjoyed the theatre production in London. Off the top of my head I can’t think of any others but I’m sure there must be some, I’ll keep you posted 😉
Yes it really did because he didn't talk much about it and this really showed me what had happened 💔 I'm sure you'll think of some more unusual ones for me to read 😊 x

My paternal grandad was a Japanese prisoner of war too. He was in the North Norfolk regiment. I’ll definitely give The Narrow Road a go, thank you.😊
You might check out Kate Quinn - I really enjoyed "The Rose Code" and I have several of the other ones.."The Alice Network" The Huntress etc.
I loved In Memoriam, Night Watch & The Book Thief too. Great recommendations lovely ❤
Thank you xx hope you're enjoying your current reads xx
