    Dane!--
It was an amulet, not a bracelet.
It has been preliminarily dated by pottery found in the area to be in the 1220-1000 BCE range. At this time, there has been no official dating, and no published results, just an announcement. It is lead, not pottery, and wouldn't use the same dating techniques. Voltammetry is a complicated process to date lead, and is only accurate to within about 150 years. The pottery is centuries later than Joshua, who was set in 1406 BCE to about 25 years later, 1380-ish BCE. Even though it was found by a biblical archaeology group, the group has made no claim to tie it to this curse in Deuteronomy. They are professionals who have real training and real jobs at secular institutions.
The site has been claimed to be a temple by its original discoverers back in the 1980s, but that's widely disputed. It could very easily be a farmhouse. It's on the wrong side of the mountain to have been from the passage Deuteronomy. It aligns with the Septuagint for which mountain it's on, but disagrees with the Samaritan Pentateuch and the dead sea scrolls. (There are a lot of known errors in the Septuagint.) It's certainly too new for Joshua's temple.
This is a super interesting find, but it's probably going to work against the bible. The writings we have that were set in the Joshua and earlier time periods were actually written centuries later. Joshua and Deuteronomy would've been written about 640 BCE at the earliest. This amulet contains not only a much earlier written proto-Canaanite language, but it's an early reference to YHWH:
“Cursed, cursed, cursed - cursed by the God YHW.
    You will die cursed.
    Cursed you will surely die.
Cursed by YHW - cursed, cursed, cursed.”
Note the YHW, not YHWH. This is important. The Canaanites had the god El, the plural Elohim, and at some point YHWH Elohim. The origin of YHWH has been postulated as not being native to the Canaanites, and instead having been imported in from southern lands. There is an Eqyptian inscription "𓇌𓉔𓍯𓅱 yhwꜣw" "Shasu of Yhw" from the time of Amenhotep III (1402-1363 BCE) where the Shasu were people in the southern lands, and YHW was a place.
If this amulet means anything, it could be a confirmation that the entire idea of YHWH was imported into the land of the Canaanites from the south. (And the Hebrews are Canaanites.) It's at the very minimum a fascinating piece for both anthropology and linguistics.

The first caller. This is what happens when laymen try to interpret archaelogy. For starters, the Pentateuch is written in iron age Hebrew, the monarchic period, well into the 1st millenium BCE. This weird view that it was written in some archaic Hebrew is wishful conjecture that presupposes that Moses or Joshua or the like had anything to do with writing the Bible. The text doesn't actually identify the author or even hint at it. On the contrary, the author never states to be an eyewitness, but is clearly writing much later. See for example Gen. 12:6, 13:7, 36:31, Deut. 1:1, 34:5.
Secondly, finding an artifact that would bring some credence to one story of the Bible, brings credence to only that particular story. That doesn't bleed into other stories and definitely not other books. All archaelogist agree that the accuracy of the Bible is not 100%, nor is it 0%. It's something in between. The further the story is from the writing, the less accurate it seems to get. If you find a piece of jewellery that bumps Joshua's account from like 20% to 25%, congratulations. Now you need to work on the other 75%. And much of it is totally wrong, like Jericho having walls in that time period or many of the cities being conquered etc. It's highly coloured and distorted memories of probably partly historical events.

A priest (Juan) found out about an island where its people never, never heard of God, Alah, or any other deity. Let alone of any religion. And there was no crime, no killings, nobody lied. It was a very peace loving community.
So Juan rented a boat and went to this island with a bunch of bibles. He was welcomed as the first foreigner to ever visit them; they set up a big lunch table with plenty of fine food under a beautiful blue sky. Then Juan began to preach; to make it short, he talked about a couple that were not supposed to eat certain apple, and because they dissobeyed, all people are born sinful and all the calamities happen because that sin. And he aded that, if you don't believe in this, at their death they would be thrown into a lake of eternal flames to suffer for eternity. That's when the party ended; he was put back on the boat and got the title of persona non gratta.

Jelmer always does this. The hosts could be in mid-sentence and he'll start talking as if they aren't.

    • @USCanDoBetter
      @USCanDoBetter 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Jelmer seems to think a very, VERY specific circumstance should be applied to everything everywhere. That way he can say that since “logic breaks down” anything he can come up with is true.
It’s the same way the people who know for a fact they have nothing supporting the thing they attach their lives to will say “well people can be wrong” as a way to get around basic evidence. For some reason very dumb seemingly narcissistic people seem to think that if they just claim “well what about…” then that’s their invitation to just make up whatever.

    • @TypographyGuru
      @TypographyGuru 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

It’s always the same ‘burden of proof problem’: he suggests the possibility of a “paradoxical logic/state” and demands that others either accept it or prove it wrong. Yet he never bothers to demonstrate that this logic could exist or does exist. As with the mentioned black hole example. ‘You can’t prove that logic doesn’t break down in there’, so “gotcha!”.
Jelmer, yes, I accept that when I cross the road there is either a car coming or there is not a car coming. Don’t waste our time with a supposed third option unless you have some demonstration for it.

His major flaw is that he switches terms Everytime he calls but no one has ever called him out on it.
Actually Shannon did but got overtalked.
Helmer said it this way, " if we are discussing gods existence, then we are just speculating on the true nature of reality".
That is wrong. That's why he says to Matt, "so you are saying reality is not defined". And Matt says no.
He overtalks because if he isn't agreed with, he doesn't even register that they are talking. So his calls only focus on the concept of A or not A.
If he ever let hosts talk, they would end up arguing his real mistake in thinking saying god exists or not exists means that question has ANYTHING to do with how reality is defined. Neither topic has anything to do with the other. Yet he can't stop fighting about it.

I’ve experienced OBEs since I was a small child. They are quite an interesting brain state, where some of the higher cognitive functions of the brain are active during the brain’s sleep cycle, when normally they are not. However, no one has ever been able to accurately “leave their body” and investigate the world around them during this state. The brain seems to create a replica of the world we expect to see. Almost like a spontaneous generation of a virtual reality environment. There is absolutely zero evidence that our consciousness projects itself outside the brain into the actual physical world around us.
OBEs are indicative of nothing more than how awesome our brains can be. No need to apply magic. I really wish people would give credit where it’s due.

What does this “soul” look like and how does it interact physically which it would need to do constantly? How can we remove a soul? Why do people with severe brain damage, wind up comatose, in a vegetative state, or severe personality shifts if that stuff is controlled by “soul”?

What I'm saying is - he's strict as shit, of course....but he HAS to be. After seeing how many time-wasters there are, or people who interrupt etc, with a limited time per caller on the show, he has to be direct.
So back in the day - he never had a time count (which he now has). Back then, he'd just rip into the callers.

As someone who deconstructed because of channels like this, Emma Thorne, Atheist Jr. and The Line approaching christianity in a polite and respectful way calling out the crazy religious videos online I'd say it's better to address them. For me at least, because I won't speak for anyone else, it helped me see the lies I've been living with for 35+ years and I've really worked through why I believed what I did for so long. So for me watching videos like this didn't strengthen my religion. It opened my mind to criticizing it. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for what you do. It's helped me more than words could ever express.

I read this story of original sin in a different way, and I don't quite understand why I'm alone in this, so perhaps I'm wrong in my reasoning:
They ate the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil, right? Meaning at that point they knew right from wrong, so to speak. This doesn't mean they didn't do good and bad things before that, it just means they had no idea if the things they did were good or bad. And I don't see how this act itself would *cause* them to do bad things, simply because they now knew what things were bad and what things were good.
Sin already existed. The fact that they were able to choose to eat the fruit, and that the snake was able to fool them into this, both mean sin existed before they actually took a bite of the fruit. Likewise, death already existed, which is why there was the fruit of everlasting life, which they didn't eat, and which God made sure they wouldn't also eat, so that they wouldn't *become* immortal, which they weren't already.

Theists never seem to realize that their philosophical arguments for the existence of God ultimately rest on making an unfounded assumption that the Bible's description of God is true. They'd be better off trying to come up with a philosophical proof that demonstrates how making an argument that's indistinguishable from trolling doesn't necessarily make you a troll. 'Cause it usually seems like trolls all the way down.

Jelmer's argument was idiotic. On what basis did you decide that a clearly binary question would, if definitively answerable with reference to evidence (which it isn't, due to it being unfalsifiable), would require classical binary logic?
Well, let's look at either end, and then at that middle that we are excluding (if there can be such a thing). At one end, there is gods don't exist, at the other there is n gods do exist, where Jelmer has limited n = 1. Are we really saying that there is a middle state in which either half a god exists (and half a god doesn't) or a god half exists? And, in the event that we are, are we really going to take that middle position seriously?

One or more scientists might believe a thing, but if they cannot demonstrate a scientific foundation for the belief, then the belief is unfounded.
Some neurologists believing that there is a soul, but being unable to produce anything scientifically to support it would be like me saying "i believe in rainbow unicorns and i am sure they exist! But i have no way of proving it to you.", it's a case of cool story bro.

I think more common than that, people don’t answer questions because they don’t understand it. And rather than ask for clarification, they think it preferable to say… something.

34:55 - IMO, a better response to this is, the fact that there isn't a robust, comprehensive explanation doesn't mean that there isn't one at all. _"Consciousness is a first-person experience arising from certain brain activity"_ is an explanation. That we don't know everything about the mechanics or the origin of consciousness does nothing to diminish that the evidence overwhelmingly points in that direction. Notably, theists have no problem with this in their own arguments. They will often say that not knowing the precise mechanics of how god created the universe doesn't mean that we can't conclude that he did it. Other than self-interest, what treat this issue any differently?
