I've followed these cars for over 30 years, and I own a '63 sedan. To find an original '62 convertible in this condition is a really good deal and a rare opportunity. Having said that, I know the restomod market for these is pretty hot, but they're only original once and original ones are disappearing. I would get this in shape and keep it original, then use the money to restomod something that's already been worked. Originality is very very valuable. It's your car, but it would be hard to see this car lose its original quality.
The engine is a 430 MEL, by the way. MEL stands for Mercury Edsel Lincoln. This engine replaced the old Y Blocks used in the Lincolns of the 50's.

You have a rare beauty in that old car. Please don’t ruin it by chopping it up or slamming it to the ground. Or by putting giant clown wheels on it. Give it the full frame-off restoration it deserves.

@@madkidd00000007 You are absolutely correct. I used the wrong terminology. Thank you for correcting me. I simply meant a full restoration. As for the drivetrain, I would love to see them put something beefy in there. I just hope that they will treat an old, classy car with class.

    • @aloysiusbelisarius9992
      @aloysiusbelisarius9992 ปีที่แล้ว

@@madkidd00000007 Having experience with these cars, I have to disagree with the "suck" assessment. That drivetrain is rooted in high performance, however tuned down a bit for luxury-car use...which is more than can be said about engines today (save maybe for Hemis) which are plain rollers on steroids and not really meant to last half of forever. There is hardly anything that matches the durability of a clap-door Lincoln's drive train. The one detail that can, however, warrant the assessment of "suck" is the two-barrel carburetor installed in this year. A 4-barrel would have been better, which was why they changed that the following year.
Granted, the components aren't quite so beefy as the ones used starting in '66, but they were enough to propel the heaviest-built cars in America to triple digits (not that there is any place in America aside from closed race tracks where one would even use such speeds).

Awesome rare car. Keep that in mind rare car. Do not make something out of it,
that it is not meant to be. Rare car is already enough of a good thing. Keep it as
original as possible, old school of course a few upgrades are okay like paint,
carpet, disk brakes maybe, use factory or original parts. Go through engine
completely, maybe electronic ignition maybe , AC maybe, if you can find
factory piece. But all original would be better. Those are my thoughts, since
you guys asked to put individual thoughts in comments.
    May you find Harmony,

Sell those wheels you got and use the money to help restore it to ORIGINAL. Just fix the drivetrain issues and keep it original. This was one of the most beautiful cars ever designed and has a definite mystique that goes with it. Customizing it will please a few people but make most people cringe at seeing what you did to a classic. "Customizing" it would be like putting lipstick, purple spiked hair, tattoos and ghetto bling on the Mona Lisa. Restored they are worth a lot of money, too -- especially the convertible!!.

The top is hard to synchronize all the motors, there are many many hours ahead just to make that work but it's worth the effort. I had a 58 Ford hard top convertible with a similar setup, there are limit switches that control when the individual motors run and the most important part is the synchronization of when they turn on to pull the top down into the locked position. If not prefect the top will set deeper on one side than the other and could bend parts and cause one motor to get the signal to stop while the other is still running. The good news is that there are no computers to deal with only timing and start stop signals. That was a long time ago I got that car from under a tree during my senior year 1966, so yep I'm an old coot. I drove it until I got drafted I went everywhere in that old Ford including a trip from Phoenix to Oregon in 1967. I paid one hundred dollars for it put a bunch of miles on it but my dad sold it while I was in the Army I think he sold it for scrap even though I ran fine when I left.

Please don't patina it! Those Lincolns are some of the most iconic and beautiful cars to come out of the 60s. Show it the love it deserves with a slick paint job, vintage air, whatever the drive train needs to be super reliable (Coyote) and something like a ridetech suspension (not to slam it but to keep the feeling of floating down the road). If you leave it as is, you won't use it the way it was meant to be used but if you put in the time, money and elbow grease you'll use the hell out of it and love every second of it.

I found the 62 in navy blue and light blue leather interior what a beautiful machine it was all options. I bought it 1970. It had 50,000 MI. Me and my friends had Camaros and mustangs this held its own with the big 430 ci.
Also, does vapor locks in the heat.
Is it a factory air conditioning it was a beast. Conley leather and Berber carpet. The wood enhancement is real. I also had a 1963. Lasted the longest and I also had a 1965 Anna 1967. I had to rewire the 1963. A clumsy mechanic working on it with pliers touch the positive and negative battery which freed all the wires except for the relays. Amazing everything worked after I rewired.

Dude, definitely C10 Slayer style it out, either a super deep gloss pearl whit or like a glazed cherry red, nit bass boat flake, but like sugar glitter with a stupid deep clear coat over top. Friggin nuts. You guys scored!

Please don't cut this survivor up. By some miracle It lasted all these years. There are plenty of modded lincolns out there already

It has a 430 engine in it, which is specifically designed for that car. The windshield wiper motor along with other features run off of hydraulic fluid powered by the power steering pump and the power top includes a series of electrical switches, relays and motors, which need to function properly, or you will cause major damage, not to mention the acres of vacuum line to operate other functions. Yes, you can stab a 460 in her, but you would be devaluing your vehicle by a lot. Because it's a mostly solid platform, I say put her back the way she should be or sell it as is to someone who can. These are very complex vehicles and expensive to do right.

The rings are probably stuck is why it is probably smoking not guaranteed, but you can make it smoke more for just a little bit and see if that’s the problem run it at high, idle and pour either sea foam or ATF down the carb . I have done this in the past to clean out the carbon in the combustion chamber and rings

I'm with the majority of the comments. Full original restoration. If done correctly your ROI could be 10x. If a full resto is not your style, you could still get a lot more than $20K on the open market, just have to wait for the right buyer. 👍🏼 Great find!
