    The use of a bell mouth on intakes is widespread. Any throttle body setup will use a bell mouth/velocity stack/trumpet on each individual runner.
    What surprised us about this video is the massive effect a bell mouth has on the effectiveness of an intake.
    The conclusion of this video is that by adding a bell mouth to an air filter is similar to doubling the size of the air filter.
    Or to put it another way, removing the bell mouth from the end of the intake is equivalent to almost halving the size of the air filter.
    In short the results of this test are remarkable. We knew bell mouths were effective but we underestimated just how essential they are to the performance of an air filter and the intake system in general.

    K&N should watch this video. So many have sharp 90 degree edges. Yes it's a measurable difference, have done so numerous times on Dyno personally.

    Help me understand. The shape of the air filter helps the air flow? With the filter removed the air flow is "rough" and doesn't flow as well. Basically you are looking for the lowest vacuum number possible?

      Exactly. Lowest vacuum possible at turbo inlet. For NA lowest vacuum possible in the inlet manifold at full throttle. No vacuum = no restriction.

    Better yet, show the CFM differential at steady vacuum with/without the bell mouth. CFM is something more people can relate to

      Hi. Directly after the air filter you want the pressure to be as close to atmospheric as possible. Vacuum/negative pressure directly after the air filter is bad

      @@Fosgen lower restriction means turbo works less for same mass of air compressed, if your controlling boost to a certain psi, that means lower blade speed to achieve the same pressure level, aka less heat on the compressed side and better turbo life/response/efficiency. It matters.

      +turbotonic27 HI. The AEM Filter in this test is synthetic fibre. Material is irrelevant to the bell mouth prinicple.

      as long as the size is correct either is good. paper will be one time use, foam will be cleanable

      StreetandCircuit Thanks, i know there are different designs, like horns, round ones, cones, is that for aesthetics or is there a actual benefit from using different shapes of foam filters
