It was absolutely surreal getting this in yesterday. I’ve been eagerly awaiting criterion to release it since the restoration was announced a year ago. This movie for the years has been damn near impossible to get a hold of so I’m so glad to finally own it. He shot it on a dv cam back in the mid 2000s when they looked just horrendous, but in my opinion the aesthetic adds to the movie, gives it a creepy layer. It was cleaned up for this new release and does look much better than it used to. Just know what you’re getting into as far as the picture. Also the film is maybe his most abstract and inaccessible film he’s ever done. But I love it, and I think I went in with the right expectations so it really didn’t bother me. If there’s any movie you should just relax and let the experience wash over you it’s this one. As far as my favorites from him I’d say overall the entirety of Twin Peaks combined is my favorite. Just one of the most powerful and incredible pieces of art I’ve ever seen. As far as just films by themselves go I’d say Mulholland Drive is probably my favorite. He stopped uploading a few months ago but he has this incredible TH-cam channel where every day he would do a weather and number report. Love the man so so much.

I've been diving into David Lynch for the first time back in January, and I started with the only mild film in his filmography, which is "The Straight Story". And then a few weeks later, I've seen "Blue Velvet" and "Lost Highway" for the first time in my life, and IMHO, "Lost Highway" is my favorite David Lynch movie of all time, and it has a great call-back to Lynch's own "Blue Velvet" due to its dark and psychosexual themes of the movie. And one more thing, Lynch also appeared in Steven Spielberg's "The Fabelmans" as John Ford. Great unboxing, btw!💯
And here is my personal ranking of David Lynch's films:
    1. Lost Highway (1997)
    2. Blue Velvet (1986)
    3. Mulholland Drive (2001)
    4. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992)
    5. The Straight Story (1999)
    6. The Elephant Man (1980)
    7. Inland Empire (2006)
    8. Eraserhead (1977)
    9. Wild at Heart (1990)
    10. Dune (1984)

My interest in David Lynch began to fade around the time Wild at Heart was released. His brand of "surrealism" struck me as being increasingly superficial and just seemed to be there to shake up a rather routine and uninspired story. The second season of Twin Peaks was godawful.
I don't think there is any single moviegoing experience that has infuriated me more than when I saw Mulholland Road. I found the pilot episode posted on TH-cam a couple years ago and was supposed to be an ongoing series. I thought it was quite good and made me think this could have been interesting. Then there was The Straight Story which on its surface looks like the most dull story you can imagine but he makes it into a beautiful dream as Alvin Straight travels the highways and byways to see his ailing brother. Then came Inland Empire. I went in expecting it to make absolutely no sense and wasn't as angry exiting the theatre as Mulholland Drive, and I thought: That was three hours wasted. This is pretentious shit. I'm not a slave to narrative or structure but a film should be something more than a bunch of scenes edited together. The "storyline" about the cursed film really goes nowhere or has much to offer. It was just boring. But don't perceive me as bring a hater. I still love his early films. The first David Lynch film I got to see on a big screen was The Elephant Man in 1980. It was a remarkable experience. I still think Eraserhead is among the most original American films ever made. Blue Velvet is his masterpiece, as well the first season of Twin Peaks. But eventually I outgrew it. When the revival of Twin Peaks was announced I stirred no interest. I've watched a few episodes that aired on the Pluto channel and I wasn't impressed. There were a couple interesting scenes. I recommend finding his animated shorts called Dumbland; they're actually quite funny, or the comic strip he drew called The Angriest Dog In the World. If you're a completist there is his two segments in the anthology film Hotel Room and the short-lived series On the Air. The first episode was okay but the other four are weak.

Definitely best going in blind for Lynch movies. A synopsis either wouldn't do the film justice or would spoil the experience.

These clear plastic criterion cases have grown on me but it bugs me that it's not a digipack like *all* of Lynch's other criterion releases.
Btw, while it would be interesting to see what a 4k release of this would look like, the movie was shot in SD. It's supposed to look kind of ugly.
As for ranking, my list is loose but...
    1. Mulholland Drive
    2. Elephant Man
    3. Blue Velvet
    4. The Straight Story
    5. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (which I may not've liked if I'd never seen and loved the show)
    6. Dune (something about it)
    7. Lost Highway
    8. Inland Empire (last but I do enjoy it)
    100. Wild At Heart

What bugs me are the digipaks---more vilnerable to wear & tear than the thick, sturdy Criterion clamshell cases. But I agree that Wild at Heart is way on the bottom of Lynch's work, even though I love him---that one is a thumbs-down.
