Hey I just noticed that Daniel wore a RIT jacket, @5:51 and that made me excited to see someone representing RIT. I’m going there next year and I’m super excited!!!
I had a teacher like that and ended up dropping the class. Im black&russian jewish and have a severe chronic illness which causes me to miss school or take longer getting to the class bc stairs hurt my joints and its on the 3rd floor.His lessons never made sense, the homework was always off topic and the teacher was both extremely racist(he often called me and others racial and sexual slurs) and he was rude regarding my illness even though I was registered with the disabled students office(He tried to force me to take a test while i was in the er, tried to drop my grade for emailing him to say that i couldnt show up that week, and then gave me an F on a test because I had to leave early due to severe pain even though i finished the test). I reported him and a few other students did as well from other classes but they did nothing about it. His reviews were all so great so to get there and him be a grade a asshole was really horrible.
I have had art professors who obviously have biases towards certain styles and techniques. Art is so objective, and people often forget that their opinions are just that. I just take it with a grain of salt now and try to do my own thing though it can be difficult and breeds self-doubt for me. I definitely agree that teachers shouldn't be so closeminded to their students :(
I totally understand you in regards to your art teacher. I go to an art 'school' as well and it was surprising the number of art teachers who aren't actually pushing you in your art and instead are pushing their opinions on you when, to a degree, art is supposed to be objective in a learning environment. Makes me forever grateful for the few art teachers that do support me and give constructive criticism that will improve my art. Hipe your experience gets better next year!
Having a teacher like that puts such a downer especially if you feel like anything you do they will put you down... I hope next year you have all good teachers!
i literally feel the same like i'm from hong kong and i'm in the uk now but some teachers assume that my english isn't that good or like i don't understand certain words when i clearly speak english fluently and it frustrates me too. like i feel like if some other person in my school doesn't know a complex word it isn't surprising but if i don't know a complex word they just assume i don't know any other words either. i know they don't mean no harm but sometimes i just feel looked down upon too :"(

Hi you shouldn't have to explain yourself to negative comments. If you feel this professor is negative towards your group of friends ... you are more than likely correct. Rely on your basic gut instincts. I am 52 a nurse for over 30 years also have degrees in psychological theory and counselling plus a degree in social sciences. So beautiful girl the vibes your picking up from your professor sound very bias and negative shame on her.!!!! Always trust your basic instincts and enjoy your summer break with love and hugs xxx
I was a graphic design student and remember having this one art history professor who was also difficult like that. Basically your opinions had to be exactly like hers, and if they weren't you were wrong. Most students in her class were failing, and even I, a straight A student, was barely holding a passing grade. All of my essays were graded pretty badly, but by some miracle my last one, the final one, received the highest grade, which is ridiculous because I literally wrote it like an hour before it was due. Something was definitely up with her, so yeah, I feel you on that one.

Hi Jasmien, I just wanted you to know that being a architecture student, even if its not art to be precise, I could relate a lot to what you're mentioning about being a design student and that bitchy professor (yes I said bitchy. and this is me being really nice {if only non-design students could understand}). Its so frustrating to be taught by someone who is very uncertain. like a lot of the time they'd ask us to change something in the design and in the next class they'd ask us specifically why we made the change. and ask us to change it back again. UGH. especially its even harder when you have two professors for a class and then one of them would say something and the other professor would pick on the change you made according to the first one(and at the end theres just too many cooks spoiling the Ramen lol). and then the most annoying part is that during the final externals presentation (this is when an actual architect comes to mark your presentation and ask you questions) sometimes the external would pick on the part where you changed according to the professor and our professor would specifically ask us before the exam not to mention their name at all when were asked any question about our design and it even gets more frustrating because they'd be there standing next to the architect smirking without owning up to the mistake they made us make!!. you can only imagine how frustrating it is!! and the thing I don't like about a lot of teachers is that they try to bring you back to the direction they want you to go instead of pushing you and helping you get to where you want to be especially design being so subjective, nothing is wrong or right. and that just kills your motivation or inspiration to work hard in that subject. Also I soo related to the part where they pick on you for being asian. Oh yea, Im from India, but from the state Nagaland where its between India and china so were very different looking from the typical Indians and that is why sometimes I feel like they pick on me. especially being the only student from my state. its so fucking annoying when they think I am an international student and that I am from Nepal.. like do they even know their own country? I know how things get being a design student, cause its not something you actually pass just studying or cramming notes. everything we do really reflects our mental health and happiness and to be bothered by something really disrupts our whole flow of working process. I just felt like ranting cause I love to especially how hard life can get when you face people who you don't get along especially with the way you think and function, haha. and congratulations YOU PASSED yay!! I got the same issue with a tutor as well it is really annoying luckily I won’t have them once I finish this course so I have to deal with it until end of June

She would make me feel sooo stupid and she would make fix my mistakes and I would and then she would tell me I never had to fix it! She would also make me feel useless and my mental health started deteriorating because she made me feel like I sucked. I feel like as a teacher they should be open minded and supportive.

In the US it is very hard to hold a teacher accountable for their behavior. She also mentioned talking about it to a counselor and they told her “we can’t really do anything about it” (she says this in the video). I think what Jasmien was trying to explain is that the word she said was harsh, but she was also giving context to make why she said the word. She probably doesn’t say that about any teacher, just this one specifically. I guess as a US student in art I can relate a lot more to what she’s going through.
