I use bass pro cat max hooks 9/0 all the time. The only problem is the are not off set enough but that's easily fixed. I did have one a couple years back that broke hooked up with a good fish
You had great success with eel that kept a long time. A fishing trip to load up eel would be interesting. Perhaps with salted frozen eel (vacuumed packed) you'd never run out of bait. P.S. I run into that in georgia to dave and i pull bank hooks and i take every 1 that i find.i call it cleaning up the mess somebody else left.we like to rave with catfish dave.

Try a small swim bait for shad, 3" Keitech swim bait or less. Caught some big shad on swim baits.
