  • During a road trip from Toronto to Long Island, we stopped in Letchworth State Park an Upper New York State Park that has been dubbed the Grand Canyon of the East and voted the number one state park in the USA.
    We toured the Upper, Middle and Lower Falls, Mount Morris Dam, Wolfs Creek and had a white water rafting adventure with Adventure Calls Outfitters.

    I can't believe I'd never heard of the 'Grand Canyon of the East.' This makes me want to do a road trip, too. The views are stunning and I'd love to raft down the gorge.

      Same here! :) The blog post has an FYI that was also helpful: "Don’t confuse Letchworth State Park with New Yorks Ausable Chasm, which has been dubbed “The Grand Canyon of the Adirondacks”. Even though these two epic parks are both beautiful waterfall-filled gorges, the experiences are drastically different. In Letchworth State Park, no matter the water levels, the three main waterfalls, Upper Falls, Middle Falls, and Lower Falls can reliably be viewed."

      @@WanderingWagars You should visit the western finger lakes. Especially the Canandaigua, Honeoye and Naples area in the Bristol Hills. This area is not too far from Letchworth. Take a drive down county road 36 from Naples to Honeoye. This area is so beautiful and little known to most People. Also recommend county road 12 from Naples to Canandaigua.

    the views in the park are stunning. even better is the park's history. mary jemison, the white woman of the genesee, who was kidnapped by indians. it was a ccc camp during the depression. later it was used as a german pow camp during ww2. in the museum you will see the skull of a mastodon uncovered in a nearby field. the raft ride isn't exactly "white water" but still fun to do. it's a wonderful place.

    Just so everyone is aware...this state park is electric only. No sewer, no water. Yes there is a dump station a short drive up the entrance driveway. I live about an hour away and camped there all the time as a kid. And it has over something like 66 miles of different trails. Awesome campground. Also an Olympic size swimming pool.

    one more comment about the park- the genesee river which flows through the park runs south to north. i believe there is only one more river in the u.s. that does so. if i am wrong, i would love to hear about it.

    • @WanderingWagars
      @WanderingWagars  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be cool, but there are a number of major rivers in the US that flow north. Some of these include the Bighorn, Deschutes, and the Mojave along with the Genesee.

    • @WanderingWagars
      @WanderingWagars  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They vary a lot depending on rainfall. When we visited, in the middle of the summer, they were fairly tame. But in the spring when the melt occurs, they can get pretty gnarly.

    Don't get me wrong, it's a very nice state park, but it is voted number one because it is very close to major population centers, NYC, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore, etc. State parks in places like Arkansas or Idaho would never get as many votes.

      Colorado Rocky Mountains. Continental divide, sawtooth mountains, black canyon, Natural hot springs everywhere or as we call them Hippie dips. High elevation desert to black timber and everything in between. 20 minutes out of town and you are at 8000 feet and not a sole in sight. Western Colorado has the Largest Flat top Mesa in the world. The Grand Mesa. you haven't seen mountains are until you get here. 14400 feet Pikes Peak. Monarch pass. Red Mountain pass. Lizard head pass. Mount albert, Colrado River. Rio GRande i could go on forever.
