- The postwar German Navy, the Bundesmarine, surprisingly used three WWII U-Boats, the last only coming out of service in 1982. Find out the story of the last of Hitler's U-Boats that served the modern German Federal Republic and their ultimate fates.

Totally love NO INTRO in your videos. Straight to the point.
All of these subs were miles ahead of the typical U-boat that served in Atlantic wolf packs.
Type 23 were many years ahead of their time. They are spectacular even today.
Amazing.I am lucky to find such a great channel.
You are too kind!
This is my history channel for World War II there is no other better
When your the 1st one, you always feel like this Historian; Mark Felton is actually talking to you, conversing with you as a, ‘meticulous & ready-to-learn’ individual.
Glad you enjoyed the video.
My favorite channel. Great work Mark.
What an excellent video thank you Mark! Thank you for your time.
A visit to Bremerhaven has been added to my bucket list.
Have you ever thought of doing a visitors guide of European WW2 sites, vehicles and ships? Actually it would make a good book as well.
Thanks Mark, interesting to watch.
Thanks.

Thanks
Great channel well done👍
Thanks for your support
This is a really interesting topic, never even crossed my mind before. I thought Germany was prohibited from operating Uboat for a while after WW2 ended.
it depends on tonnage, so our Boats were small in the 60s, 70s,80s,90s
@@Sturminfantrist The new German submarines were smaller after the war because they were responsible for securing the Baltic Sea exits and the North Sea within NATO. Not because they were not allowed to be bigger, but the Baltic Sea and North Sea are relatively shallow and therefore large boats are unsuitable. They have been specially developed for this.
The large restored type XXI boat from the 2nd World War (today museum ship "Wilhelm Bauer" in Bremerhaven) was not a combat ship. It served the Federal Office of Defense Technology and Procurement (WDT 71) for testing technical innovations for the class 206 boats. It was not a warship the crew were civil technicians of the WTD 71 in Eckernförde. As a child I saw how 1957/58 in Kiel was rebuilt for this purpose.
Nazi U-Boats? Woah!!! Do you have their registration number as party members?
Thank you sir 👍
A pleasure!
Great content. Would you do a video on your background and research?
Its on Wikipedia or on my website www.markfelton.co.uk Thanks for watching
The Germany Navy was smart when they put on that Russian-style enclosed Bridge. The North Sea is not very friendly at least 6 month of the year. I recently watched a Program about the new type 212A getting into a storm. They couldn't dive due to shallow waters and for more than a day getting on the open Sail was deemed "life-threatening" by the Skipper.
very cool!!
I wonder what advantages & disadvantages the extended fairing on the postwar XXIII sub's sails entailed
Great job
Thanks
How many U-boats survive to this day?
Depends on the Model.
Not many, the Germans have some few (no more than five) and I guess, the British have got their hands on one or two as trophies, now to be seen in museums. You may see one at Laboe (northern Germany) or at Bremerhaven.
one Type VII C U-995 in Laboe , captured intact in Norway, 1965 given back to FR Germany by Norway and one Type XXI U-2540 in Bremerhaven Germany this Boat was raised in the 50s and used in federal German Navy service , one Type IX C/40 U-534 raised a few years ago is in in Birkenhead UK, one Type IX C U-505 in Chicago USA caputured by USN in the atlantic in1944
All in all four surviving U-boats 2 in Germany , 1 in UK and 1 in USA, thats all.
Sadly we scraped the 2 Type XXIII Boats raised and in Service with the Bundesmarine
@@xornxenophon3652 the us has a couple as well
Well done!
Thank you.
Ahhhh. Bremerhaven, my home town
Fascinating

Many thanks. It's great to know the videos are well received.
Pretty cool
🤔 wow, how they managed to raise !!
TYPE XXI, GO!!
Awesome
I turn this channel onto anyone interested in history of such things!
Anybody know just how many u boats are on display at various locations worldwide?
wise1 3 as far as I know: two Type VII: one in Chicago, USA and one in Laboe near Kiel, Germany as well as the Type XXI we saw in the video
first class again. mark felton.
Did the revived German military use any other WW2 equipment such as tanks?
Tank,Nope!
but during the first phase the Bundeswehr used small arms from Wehrmacht, P-38, MG-42,K98k oh i forgot, the Bundeswehr Paratroopers used WW2 luftwaffe Paratroop Helmets for a short time until the US Helmet type arrived in numbers
But we used US WW2 M3 Halftracks, US M7 Priest in the 50s
Why is there a 170 on her?
Mark Felton is a scholar and a gentleman.
Very kind.
Damn shame there's only one Type XXI boat left.
Another interesting video, Mark. Have you ever investigated the very sophisticated Japanese submarines discovered by American occupation forces after VJ Day?
Thanks. I've written about the I-400 class boats in my book The Fujita Plan.
I will certainly look into that book. A close friend’s father was in the first echelon into Japan with a unit assigned to dealing with all sorts of Japanese weapon systems.
Interesting 🧐
Fabulous video. Never knew Nazi Germany ere U Boats functioned even after the war. If I ever go to Germany, I will make it a point to see this U Boat.
they moved vessels in service which layed on the bottom of the sea for several years? seriously? o m g
Before your cool vid was an ad for Trump's proposed wall. Do you choses the ad content or is it random?
It is random and absolutely nothing to do with me.
Poor title, what do you think boats are... NAZI? You actually mean WW2 era U-boat.
Disappointing to see Mark use the term "Nazi U-Boats" in the title. The fact is that the Nazi party did not have them. Rather the German navy did.
Lots of scuttling.
Dear God they were tiny
That's what she said
Nazi boats? Didn't know inanimate objects actively participated in politics and joined Socialist parties 👌🏻
It is kindish to call a submarine a "Nazi U-Boat". Are their any royal ships, democrat bombs, republic
planes, liberal canon at this time?
I do wish Mark would stop saying kriegsmarina, it is kriegsmarine for heavens sakes!
Its how its pronounced in German. The 'e' on the end of a word is pronounced like an English 'a' = for example 'Porsche', another word many Americans and British struggle to pronounce properly.
Nazi U-Boats? did they face republican P-51s?
ummmm, odd Question but I'm sure they did. Air Power was the biggest Killer of German Subs
Tulsi 2020
Argh.. Nazi uboat? Most of the kaleuns or even submariners were no nazis and had no relation to them.
Wtf ? There was no Westgermany in ww2
Yes there isn't, but he is talking about the post war careers of these originally ww2 submarines, and the last one served until 1982. I am pretty sure there is a West Germany by 1982
Du hast es nicht kapiert oder, die Boote wurde wieder gehoben und beim Bund in dienst gestellt, sogar im Ausbildungshandbuch aus den 60ern waren die noch als eigene Boote vermerkt
Why do u refer to them as "NAZI" U Boats? NAZI was a Party. How about U Boats from the Kriegsmarine from the Second World War"?
