I enjoy watching the life of Kai series, but when you title the video "Local NORTH SHORE LIFEGUARD Wins THE EDDIE" you should probably make the video about Luke Shepardson. That guy has been charging big waves and surfing contests for a long time just like Kai yet he is underground. Why not compile footage of Luke's surfing progression and his story leading up to this epic event? That would make for an interesting video that is more than just click bait.

Agreed. The reason they don't make the video about Luke because luke isnt on their team that they sponsor. Luke doesn't have huge red bull logos on his boards, hats, skiis, cars, clothes and forehead. He won't give them shots drinking red bull on the shore, etc, etc. This channel is red bull and their purpose is advertisement, not surfing. They wouldn't spend time making a surf video that doesn't advertise them.
Yeah it is pretty pathetic, I switched off within the first minute realising what this is, not even really about the Eddie it is about Red Bull and to think they are twisting it for their own advertising is about as low as it gets.
I still have the surf mags from when it was announced he had drowned. I could not eat for 2 days because I had met him. The first time I met him I thought he was rude and angry about mainlanders surfing Hawaii. But he explained why ...because so many outsiders had no respect for the Hawaiians. I understood and he and I became friends. Clyde also spoke to me and I understood that Hawaii was never going to be the same because of the magazines and movie coverage. Their islands would never be the same...and they weren't. He was a spiritual brother to me!
I guess surfing a mountain of sea water will either make you arrogant or humble. Kai is great, so is humbled, regardless of how skillful he is. All of the surfers are amazing, surfing something that most people would flee from!
The best thing that happened to my drums in Montauk .. Keala Kennelly Paige Alms and Lisa Anderson attended. Watching the Eddie last year was better than any Superbowl .

I suspect it's not so much a windsurfing surfing thing but a class thing. When I was a grom surfing all the windsurfers were posh. Kai is extreme though
i bet kelly would become a competition judge if he was paid enough 😅 but he would probably run out in the middle of a heat and try to drop in on a wave hes been watching since 2 miles out
dont judge me. im born in 80. im from the generation that if you surfed comps you were an outcast. you were regarded as a sell out. because real surfers didnt surf comps. the commercialisation of surfing has became a virus. i see kai has the feels of a surfer before his generation but feels like he needs to, and forces himself to compete because that's what he's grown up exposed to and all the older guys around him encouraged him to compete because the money went ballistic and they didnt have that op back in the day. so his mentors must have pushed him toward the pros cause that oppurtunity didnt exist when they were young. they saw the money side of things explode and are encouraging the younger guy to go after it. kai embodies the spirit of the original generation surfer, the real surfer. but forces himself to compete and dominate, without understanding who he really is and why he really does what he does. he is old school but doesnt know it. just let it go brother, you got this ;)
It's basically a huge drop and turns into mushball of foam...granted it's one hell of a drop... Sunset is similar but the face does hold for possible short barrel or cutback
I used to work with Peter back in the day at pleasure point pizza. It's all really just a blur but why did he take the time to properly train an upstate NY grommet transplant? No, it wasnt cause he cared about the tough Santa Cruz pizza marketshare but more the tip killing gush of salt water from the nasal cavity we experienced while making a large pepperoni. Peter made sure this phenomenon was nipped in the bud prior to any new employee throwing of the dough. Always the professional and a heart of gold. Now back to our scheduled recording........

So much talent from that magical neighborhood in Maui, growing up at Ho'okipa, Maliko, moving up to Peahi, now showing out on Oahu's north shore
