    Fun Fact: “My Immortal” is Amy Lee’s least favorite song to perform. Haha
    I’ve seen Evanescence live 9 times. Eight of those times front row. I met Amy & the band after winning a meet & greet fan club contest. I know she’s had some performances where her voice was strained but that’s because she performs & rehearses so much. Literally all nine times her voice was angelic. Side note, she was the sweetest & humblest person. She was personable & down to earth. You would have thought she was a new artist with how flattered she was at my praise of her work. She hasn’t become jaded in the slightest & I hope to see Evanescence perform again soon as it’s been several years now! 😉

    I have to say, I really appreciate your critique. I watched another "voice teacher" who's sole purpose for his video was to make fun of the singers. It pissed me off. I am a classically trained singer (throat) and in my community, we support each other, we don't demean each other. You taught and you were respectful. I hope you are a huge success. You deserve it. I'm self taught have been singing since before I could even speak properly. I would like to get some training, especially for my breathing, since I have a hard time with it. I taught myself a certain way and am trying to sing more with my diaphragm, cause I like to belt out powerful notes and I need as much breath as possible for them. lol Sorry, rambling. I've had those moments too. Times where I felt that my younger self acted ridiculous and overdramatic about trivial things. But at the time, those "trivial things" weren't trivial. They were big, and horrid, and incredibly painful. Maybe they were even the worst things that had ever happened up to me at that point in my life. They were completely valid feelings at the time I was feeling them.
      Once I realized all that, I was able to let myself off the hook a bit, and it has helped me be a much better friend, mentor and mother. Because I can remember how horrible those "silly" things felt while they were happening, I can better empathize with others' feelings. Even if I personally or objectively place different emotional value on a particular situation.
      Give your 11 year old self a bit of wiggle room. You weren't pretending or faking it for attention. You were experiencing very real hurt at the time. And I bet you are an excellent friend now because you know how awful heartbreak can hurt.

    Oh what a song! 17 years ago I was big (oh so big) pregnant with my first kid, with my first love. He and I didn't work out and this song helped me grieve. He doesn't still have all of me, but he got a lot of the best of me.
    I love the emotion she conveys. She sounds like she's crying the prettiest cry of all time. Like she just got dumped by the love of her life a few weeks before having his kid.
    It's so much easier to listen to you critique it than it was to sob my guts out to it so long ago. Thanks for that! 😂

    Hi Sam,
    I enjoyed watching this video. I would like to mention 2 things:
    When you talk about Amy's legato and not legato singing, it mainly has to do with expression and also the meaning of the lyrics in those spots. On purpose not singing legato can also make the words sound more intense.
    All your comments on Amy singing are very well put, also about the tiredness of being on tour - the Synthesis tour had us on the road for a year now, we recently wrapped it up and what I really liked about the shows is, how she totally was able to focus on her singing, rather than running around, head banging and risking to be out of breath. I had the same feeling with the background vocals.
    The second thing is: it's not water she drinks, on stage she drinks Throat Coat tea ;)
    And I know all that, because I play in Evanescence since 3 years ;)
    Really enjoyed your video. Keep up the great work.

    I'm an English as a foreign language teacher and It's so interesting that phonetics play an important part on people's singing. This makes me wonder if speaking a language as a native makes singing easier opposite to a person singing in their second or even a foreign language.

    • @AbiGrijalva
      @AbiGrijalva 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      English is my second language, my fist one is Spanish, (I'm from Mexico). I have always liked singing in english rather than Spanish as I feel it's easier, and I think it is because of this same reason: phonetics. Singing in Spanish is so different for me, I feel that your voice gets too boring, there's only much you can with only five vowels, lol. Once I realized this , I started to change my vowels a little bit when I sing in Spanish so it gets easier, it doesn't sound like perfect Spanish anymore but, hey, you gotta do what you gotta do. So, being able to speak English helps me sing better overall. Win win situation. 🤓

    • @mastoner20
      @mastoner20 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Phonetics plays a massive role in singing and speech. Learning German as a second language, I spent a lot of time listening to native German singers and their English accents to learn the differences in phonetics. Also, singing in German helped me learn dramatically as well and it's really not that much harder than native English for me.

      I’m an intermediate Scottish Gaelic learner and I’ve found so far that singing in Gaelic feels easier than just speaking. Pronounciations stick in my head with a melody or something. Now, learning when and where to put emphasis is harder because I’m still learning sentence structures.

      Spanish is also my first language! (Venezuelan here) and while I do prefer singing and writing in English, I actually feel like I sound better in Spanish for some reason. I'm pretty sure I change some vowel sounds as well, and maybe even some consonant sounds. I'd have to pay more attention to my singing in the future.

    I think we can all agree that this is not her best performance, and I mean that's human, we aren't always at our best. But I honestly appreciate how you talked about her performance without directly criticizing her - you tell us what she's doing great and how she does it and how she could improve certain things without really saying that it was not that good. And that's lovely, other people would just point at her and laugh or criticize her, and not just her, but every singer, and what you do is, in my opinion, the only morally right thing to do instead of laughing. You're amazing (I hope this whole comment made sense)

    This is definitely not one of her better performances of this song, but you're spot on that her voice is tired. I can hear it very clearly because I sing this style of music often and the high impact vocals sustained over that amount of time is exhausting. Also, the strange pulsing movements she was doing paired with the staccato phrasing wasn't helping her. It sounded to me like her jaw was somewhat clenched too. I'm not trying to be negative about her at all, I love Evanescence. I do think she was pushing to get through this song though. In any case, awesome vid as usual. ^_^

    • @moriganna67ify
      @moriganna67ify 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Heather singing should not hurt your throat unless strain is being put on the vocal cords. (or from being tired of singing which happens to me at times LMAO) I think you are probably right in that it was BS however it is only my opinion. I used to make this mistake myself and not be able to hit the pitchier sounds. Now that my voice can relax they come out much better. Sams techniques really work and I am super glad I found him. He is such a lovable guy and gives amazing perspective without being nasty.

      I was taught to start singing as similarly to talking as possible at first because "trying" to sing is more likely to cause tension/strain/etc. A choir director who had been a professional opera singer had us plug our ears and talk to each other while holding the notes of the words (so we were sing-song talking) to get used to a relaxed feel in the throat.

    “Same.” *Grabs water * 😂 Anyway, another helpful video. I started watching your videos about 2 weeks ago (and binge watched the ones I’d missed). And you’ve helped me realize that I can actually work on my range/technique to get better rather than thinking, “Well, some people have it and some don’t”. Just today I sang a song that I normally would’ve put in the “not in my abilities” category. Turns out I just needed to work on my mixed voice more. I wish some one had explained actual vocal techniques to me as a kid (I took voice lesson for years, did theatre, etc...) But better late than never, and I’m having lots of fun with it! Thanks!

The same "epiphany" hit me when I was cooking just yesterday and casually rung in some high notes that I would usually have to push to death to barely scratch - and it was totally comfortable. Amy Lee... I don't even know what to say. I don't remember how old I was, but this song was the first time I focused deeply on a voice, and thought about every little thing... when I would sing along, it was the first time I listened closely and would mimic the way she was singing it, and actually feeling the difference as I would adjust to match. I always wanted to be a singer when I was a kid, however I was too shy to ask my parents. lol

  • @KatDesign

    I've seen Amy Lee perform live at least five times, if not more, and I think this video you're reviewing is not the best representation of how well she usually sings it live. There's usually more legado and less strain. Her voice doesn't usually crack either. I think there are other songs that do her more justice as well. Thank you so much for doing this video... It's nice to see her getting the recognition that she deserves. I think she's one of the greatest vocalists and she is so underrated. She gets left out when things are posted about vocalists.

      Ive seen her live twice and seen multiple live versions.. she's just not a great singer. The studio versions sound amazing but that polish doesn't transfer to live. She's a mediocre singer that hit lightning in a bottle with a well produced album that was palatable to most people but live I've never seen her not struggle. Doesn't mean she isn't good or doesn't put on a great show she's just not an elite singer.
