I love the way you geek out on the stats my friend. I always feel more educated about the hobby after I watch your vids
In my opinion buy what you love…. That’s what it’s all about
Why not do both
Agreed. I can see using this as a tool to help prioritize acquisitions though.
I think there has to be some kind of cost factor in there because all my dream cards or cards that would score highest on my are gonna probably be higher priced cards which i cant just afford to buy everyday as opposed to a $5 or $10 card off ebay or from a show. Maybe need to have multiple lists depending on your financial situation. Like cards under $100 or $200 then a list for higher priced cards you dont buy everyday.
Thr user could qualify price of a card based on their weekly/monthly/yearly budget. How much will that card cost compare to what they can spend. If an expensive card will take 5 months of the budget then it might rank lower to a card you can afford in one month.
This is great. Glad it's not only me that has created excel files with ranking systems for cards. We're in the nerd boat together now! 😅
Scoring system is awesome. Great work Teapot
I think if you add price as a factor then grade needs to also be a factor somehow. The way I would use this is to gauge whether or not I put a bid/offer on a card based on the spreadsheet score. At that point if I truly want a card and can afford it, price becomes less important since I know I truly want the card. Great video!
Great system!! Love how each individual can personalize and tailor it to their liking! Very well thought out.
I definitely watch your videos to keep myself updated in the sports card hobby! Keep at it Teapot
I like the idea of your spreadsheet. I also believe that despite the higher percent, sometimes the impulse just overtakes the critical decision making and you just pull the trigger on something else. Maybe price or just the “something shiny and new” takes over. If we can control this impulse and follow our own rules the spreadsheet provides us the guidance to keep us on track.
I enjoy watching your videos and to be honest, they have really helped me be a smarter collector. This is another insightful video to help along the journey. Thank you!
It’s a good process. I think adding in some sort of player stats could help with if looking flushing out players. For price, maybe pulling in market movers last 30, 90, 180 & 365 price movements
I like it! Good system to help you stay disciplined. Pricing tends to be a tough item because you get frustrated if you’ve missed on the same card multiple times
I love this! I thought I was the only nerd who did this stuff. I have Excel Spreadsheets on every video game I have played (my personal ratings, GOTY, etc.) and favorite horror movies. This is definitely up my alley. Thanks for sharing!
I like the fact that you have identified a weakness most of us have and created a system to help curb the issue.
T-Pot, your shows are always so good sir. Thanks for keeping us informed of what's important and helps us invest into sports cards better.
I think your scoring system makes a lot of sense. Thanks for sharing!
I don't go to the extent of having a spreadsheet for all these thoughts as it's just already engraved. I do run with having a cap of each player. Like for instance a player might get a cap of 10 cards, if I get an 11th of that player I have to choose which one of those other 10 to sell. It helps to keep upgrading the overall collection.
Yes that's a fantastic idea. I have done the same.
Love the approach. I'm in analytics, so I always appreciate these models!
I think this is a very smart tool for evaluating pickups. Geoff could have used this before that Ridder 1/1 pickup 😳 j/k. What’s great is you could make a PC or investment version based on the tiers you set. (I.e. swap in a condition &/or pricing tier). Thanks as always for the content.
Your scoring system is great knowledge to add to the toolbox. Thanks
This is an excellent idea, especially for someone like me. I am as guilty as it gets for random bidding. I will scroll through cards and drop bids without thinking about it. I always end up with cards that I didn't need or wonder why I even bought. I will definitely work out a system for myself.
I love the idea of the spreadsheet scoring system. Amazing video
This was a fun video. Any tool that helps cut out some of the noise of all of the cards out there, can definitely help. There are thousands of cards I would love to pick up at any given time, so something like this can definitely help with the overwhelm. Great video!
That is cool and I have made lots of mistakes buying the wrong cards teapot
Great video, loved the approach. I think somehow integrating this into the "collection" portion of market movers would be good where you can put in the attributes/scoring and then it can tie into the price/grade data already available within the database. This would allow you to not only have your own ranking in one streamlined app you could even set alerts. Even better, tie your top cards you want into automatic search queries that can be saved and used in Ebay or other marketplace tools.
Having a cost component is something that needs to be added. My suggestion is to have a ranking for potential up side to that player and then somehow use that number to incorporate to the number you got from your spreadsheet. You could then use a scale for that number that shows what percentage of market movers card value you should pay to be considered a good deal.
I will be more than happy to claim that Bowman box!
Value/upside can change at the drop of a dime
Your Scoring system was pretty accurate! Keep up the good work
I def appreciate the nerdiness of this. I think it's a solid plan especially since sometimes when we buy PC cards we tend to ignore the price history.
For vintage I would def use a different scale because eye appeal would be so important.
Absolutely. And could definitely modify!
Thorough system and forces you to be accountable for your choices and purchases. I’m going to use it and modify it for me. Thanks!
Great idea & video!! Definitely worthwhile to keep track of what you are looking for and prioritize
This is great! Thank you for sharing! I enjoy some good spreadsheet work myself, so this resonates with me.
This is a great tool and I will definitely be using it. Thank you.
Definitely very cool. As I've bought more and more cards I've become more and more selective about what I buy. This is a learning process (just like buying stocks) and learning from each transaction is what's more important in my opinion.
Love your ranking system. Simple. Easy to stick to.
Love the approach. I dont think filtering by price on the sheet is necessary. If you know the cards on your list well, and if you link to the data to confirm its just a matter of budget at a show or per month or however you manage cash flow.
If there are 2 cards of equal importance to you at a show (one $100, one $10,000) but you only have $500 to spend its easy enough to decide. If everything is a tie and you have the budget for either, its more subjective and I imagine availability or price relative to comps is a factor.
I'm definitely going to implement this system.
I like the thought process behind this. I definitely need to put a little more thought into importance of cards on my list before buying.
Just stumbling on this video. It's great. Just last night I actually did a ranking of all the NBA players I want to collect and then was going through some of their best cards and seeing which card I thought looked the best and was trying to tank them. I'm absolutely going to be nerding out with a formula based system like this now
The scoring system looks like a great way to stay on track and organized for sure. I tend to overspend and combine more cards and players I probably wouldn’t really want anyways so I’ll test it out and see how it goes. 😎👍💯
Great content T-pott! Keep you the excellent work!
Nicely done Teapot. Thanks for sharing this secret. I did the same with movies too.
I think it's a great system you got in place. Keep up the good work!
Solid thought process. Regardless of your scoring assembly (make your own) just make sure to have a plan. Then execute your plan. Plan, do, review. Repeat.
Always finding a way to keep me disciplined. Great ideas thank you! I emailed you for a copy. Will help me organize
This is fascinating & will really help me greatly. Thank you for this! 😊
Love the scoring system and all the info yall put out! Signing up for market movers this week!
As a spreadsheet aficionado this seems like a handy tool. Good layout, functional and entertaining for nerds like myself who just loves data. Tools like this are a hobby enhancer as far as I'm concerned.
Man this helps me so much lol. I impulsively buy online and in stores lol. Thanks man. Learned a lot from you guys over the last 6 months
"It's the process" - I think this is the most important comment. Great template for people to take and personalize.
The system really teaches a beginner like myself a very easy way to understand what we have in our collection and how to find value
Love the channel heaps of help all the time
My favorite part of your system is weighing the attributes and assigning a percentage to it. I think it's a good idea generally. I'll just never do it because I'm too lazy to make spreadsheets. I tried to do it with Ebay sales and listings and it didn't last.
I like the spreadsheet!! Good work. One possible improvement/enhancement would be to add a cost basis for the card for tracking purposes and then column to determine if you could/should also grade it. For example, if the value of the raw (+ grading) card were less than the likely gradsd condition value then perhaps it would be worth grading. If the delta on the upside is way more than the raw card cost basis, plus grading then perhaps using the red, yellow, green color coding options might be helpful in determining what to sit on and keep raw or send for grading. Good job
Thanks for all the great content. This video was spot on. I love it.
I was thinking a column for wanting a card raw or graded would make sense. That would also play into what you're willing to pay. Another column for PC or investment may also help you focus how to spend your funds.
Enjoyed the video, thanks fig sharing. Adding a ‘price column’ what you paid and market value would also be useful
I think this is a great way to prioritize purchases! Love it! What I might do for price: Suppose a collector has $500 per month to spend. I would have a column that indicates how many months budget it would take (approximately) to obtain the card, so that a "1" would be a $500 card, a "0.2" would be a $100 card, and so forth. If the monthly budget changes, that budget constant can easily be changed in the spreadsheet to update. I would not try to factor this budget column in with the other columns such as aesthetics. However, when considering purchasing a card with a budget factor of say, "0.8", I could compare that to buying two cards, each with a budget factor of "0.4", for example. Awesome video! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Good idea incorporating a fixed budget into it and then mapping each card to the budget line!
I like this idea, but like you mentioned, I would probably use it as a want list and include the condition and also come up with a way to do a lookup to get the current value / price. Maybe you should think some more about adding this to a special want list feature in market movers where you could put in your own parameters, but it included links to live auctions and the marketmovers price/value. Great job!
Great video and lots to think about, I could see where this would lead into an even deeper rabbit hole, not sure it's going to eliminate the glow of the eBay app at 2 in the morning, but may help in focusing in on specific cards.
Great Tool - I will need to request and give it a try - thanks
Love the spreadsheet- you’re an inspiration
a price to resell graph would be amazing, i think you have done great work. im a big fan
I love your videos im just starting in the hobby and you really informative thanks!
Love it man something like this is needed to keep spending in check
Your scoring Card Template concept is a solid idea. I do not have the experience you have so I may give less weighting to aesthetics .
Great video. I like the spreadsheet idea. I kinda do this in my head/heart put the sheet makes it visual. I would definitely add price to the chart because a card could be on top of the list but out of your price range. Another card could rank lower but be affordable. With price on the sheet, it would be easier to spot the "low hanging fruit" & easily build a collection.
Love this! One thing I thought with price is maybe having a duplicate sheet where you make price part of the equation and then it can just be used for cards that price would be a hinderance. You adjust the other columns by the lost percentage to price.
I love spreadsheets. Regarding incorporating price, you could perhaps add comps for cards you own. If you own a card worth $100 and the score is 80, you should probably buy cards with the same score and price or better
Really cool idea to even just keep yourself in check when looking to pick up new cards! Definitely great to categorize and if you ever need to sell!
I am a numbers geek so this type of analytics is really good.
Great Idea, love your videos, thanks for sharing!
I like the scoring system. I’d love to see you do it for baseball as well!
I don't see much I would really change. Good stuff, thanks
I always love me some spreadsheets - I think this can absolutely be useful although it won't be for everybody but for me it would because it would help narrow my focus - a lot of times I get distracted by a card I haven't seen then spur of moment make a decision and I feel like using something like this over time can help you rate your personal score quickly without necessarily having to fill it out
Always good to be analytic on your investments. Charts are always warranted.
Very interesting system! Always informative!
Love this idea. I think you need to factor price and I think if I did this myself, I would also incorporate condition/grade.
as far as pricing. I would have a budget column. Budget of 0-10, 11-20 or whatever scale you want to use. assign the budget number a ranking and then have it factor into the final score. Your budget for some cards would be more.
I think the scoring system is a good solid weighted system. With this type of system I would say watch out for your own personal biases on colour/player...etc. Because your own bias of wanting something to be worth more may just not be true in the market.
Love this, i have a spreadsheet listing cards im interested in purchasing and price so i can get a full picture of what i want at the moment and which i deem should be my next purchase.
This is great tho for the fomo effect lol. Definitely see this helping a lot becuase of the added grading
I am not feeling the scoring system because I focus on one or two players at a time for several months. Therefore, I typically know the value of the cards for that player and it prevents me from feeling FOMO.
Yep I could see that. In that case, how do you like to decide which cards of those players to purchase? Do you value certain attributes? or is it gut feel? is it for PC or for speculation potential?
If you factored in price, you'd have to do it relative to market price. For example, if you had a column that imported data from Market Movers, you could compare a hypothetical $30 card to a $300 card more fairly. If market value of the cheap card is $40, but the market value of the expensive card is $400, then the spreadsheet should give weight the more expensive card. Of course, if the cheaper card were the better deal, then the reverse would be true. Nice vid
love the scoring system spreadsheet. Can you post a link and share?
The best advice for anyone and everyone ! 🔥🔥🔥
📊 GREAT TOOLS!! I think this method can definitely help from buying any unnecessary cards. Keeping it simple is good, I may add a column with investment level or condition score etc. Thank again T-Pot in sharing these valuable videos
I think this is a super good idea and should definitely keep doing it!
This is great. What I liked the most is that you dint make grading a big factor. Think that’s very important. There plenty of cards that aren’t graded, mainly bc the collector of that card isn’t into grading. Myself included in that. I don’t grade anything.
A few ideas would be to add Graded VS ungraded, but that might fall into rarity. Others thing to people value might auto vs non. I tend to buy packs/boxes more so maybe something to help when buying packs/boxes. Would you be willing to make your Excel sheet downloadable?
Very interesting video T Pot. One of my thoughts would be to consider how price could affect a decision in making a purchase. A price multiplier would be a helpful tool. For example, a PSA 10 MPJ RC is not a massive chase card for me but if you can pick one up at a very cheap price then that multiplier attribute could push the card into the top tier of desirability? Where as a very pricey yet more desirable card could be negatively affected due to the price multiplier? Just a thought but not sure how you would create a fair and reflective multiplier. Using Market Movers would of course provide a good starting point.
That's great and useful. Thank you! :)
Great idea, looking forward to giving it a try.
Love the info T Pot!!
I think that it could be a useful practice, especially for the deGens. The problem is that the deGens won't take the time, they could use that time to buy more cards, which brings me to the most important thing; price needs to be factored in some way if it was going to work for me.
I absolutely love this! Is it possible to get a copy of this spreadsheet somewhere? I can see this being a ground foundation for building out my own spreadsheet.
Email me at help@sportscardinvestor.com to get a copy!
I think you need a column for why you might want a card, PC, investment, trade. Etc
I think the thought behind this is solid - to be more systematic to what cards you're going after and be less susceptible to impulse, FOMO, etc. I can see this scoring system being segmented for vintage, modern, ultra-modern cards. For example, rarity and importance would likely carry a heavier weight for vintage since scarcity is more organic than manufactured and older cards obviously have more history around them. Good video overall.
Love the system. I would add a "value" percentage.
This is great information but I would like to see how successful you have been with this scoring system. Its like trying to come up with a system like "Moneyball" for picking winning cards.
I love this video thx really helping me out, scoring system was awesome
For Price to effect the score I would suggest setting a budget Price. If the card is over budget, it shouldn't show.
Like your videos and very informative and good ideas as well
