    As a Michigander, I'm grateful to Rachel. Everyone in Michigan knew what was happening to Flint. Everyone. But no one outside of the local news would listen.

    Why were the officials involved only reporting to the Rick Snyder? Isn't that illegal? Where were the checks and balances?

    • @orionpax0946
      @orionpax0946 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Greenscyth22 Rick Snyder did away with all those checks and balances by placing an Emergency Manager that reported directly to him and had unilateral power to do whatever he wanted with Flint.

    The city council vote was not to use Flint River water. It was to join a newly formed water company that was still sourced from Lake Huron. They were two completely separate decisions. So not only was the city council vote purely ceremonial due to the emergency management, it was not about using Flint River water.

    I am thankful for your help Rachel Maddow, I live here in Flint, Michigan and it's getting worse. But with caring people such as you perhaps there may be changes, but I am very doubtful.

    Why are the politicians not being held accountable for criminal actions? Like wtf? Governments are allowed to knowingly kill citizens while hording money and not be held accountable for the damage that can never be repaired? Disgusting, time to hold the so called "leaders of society" accountable for their decisions (or lack of).

    The water treatment plants have to change and the lead pipes replaced with pipes that are not plastic. The water filters do not remove lead or aluminum hydroxide. These are some of the toxic materials not caught by filters. The main issue here and in every city is lead pipes and aluminum hydroxide corrosion control and Chlorinated water. This is a national scale problem that was handled with insolence.

    Why didn't these homeowners replace their lead pipes long ago? We've known for easily 40 years they are contaminating the water. This didn't just happen, it's been going on for decades. And it's not only Flint, I know for a fact that Philly is loaded with them, and I hear NYC is too. Lead is what the plumbers all used way back in the day to connect your house to the street. The city didn't install them

    The poverty line is enough income for one bedroom apartment local commute. This generally known to be 4 times the rent for one bedroom apartment local. This is the minimum wage act and social security act minimum standard of living. The legal minimum wage and legal minimum distribution of social security entitlement for disability.

      People have to have enough money to buy coal for the filters. And install filters. The pipes in the service lines have to be replaced with not plastic and not lead pipes. The corrosion control needs to be the less toxic sodium hydroxide corrosion control with glass or granite dust filters.

    Democratic Detroit supported to rise the price.
    The city had to move because of that.

    Does flint have a licensed waste water treatment facility operator? It should , it's a licensed occupation in Michigan , requires a class A license to operate Flint's Plant right? Who was operating the plant for the last few years ? Could this happen in a white community too ? Yes it could and has . Mackinac Island hasn't had a licensed waste treatment facility operator for 15 years up until this last year. Which is still not in compliance because they only have a class D license operating the plant / During the summer months the flow rate requires a class C or B license. On paper The DEQ tightened up records but not in practice . Fact is many northern Michigan towns still do not have a licensed operator on site. Most plant employees have no idea how to use a haz mat suit no idea how to take one off , no emergency action plans at many sites. Think the Governor knew when he was sipping drinks with the GOP at the Grand Hotel for the last 5 of 6 years knew when they were going to the bathroom no one was licensed to operate their waste treatment facility? Have posted similar comments in past but somehow they must have been over looked , good luck digging up the dirt!! Go Rachel!

      Not in the Governors back yard again! An extremely dangerous example of when unlicensed personnel and poor oversight collide allegedly happened a few years ago behind the Governor's Mansion on Mackinac. The waste water treatment facility thought they could save a ton of money by not shipping over the compressed waste cake to the mainland for processing. The decision was made to compost it and give it away for free for people to grow their tomato's in instead. When you look at the island you see wonderful gardens like at the Grand Hotel .What you don't normally think about is that all those flowers and gardens are ripped out and put back new every year. It costs a whole lot of money to ship everything by ferry over so naturally almost every one thought nothing of it to go grab tons of compost from the treatment plant instead. That's o.k. isn't it ? No, no i don't think so , yes even in the Governors own back yard. You can't explain that one away.Another example in need of peer review is the process being allowed in Advance Michigan on the shores of lake Charlevoix. Most of that municipality receives water from a natural spring exempt from state or city oversight .Allegedly no one is licensed to supply that commercial use of water to the public. Not sure if this is a good idea and the practice should be looked into.One of the most pristine rivers in the State of Michigan is supposed to be the Jordan River , but is it ? the Jordan River Poisoned ,?? !!! Since the 1970's very special care has been applied to see that salmon and trout flourish in the Jordan. Access to it by any motorized boat for 35 year has been prohibited. Much to the confusion and concern of all responsible decreased fish count occurs every single year of all species across the board at an alarming rate , except lampreys. This last year 2015 basically found the Jordan river was almost completely dead. Why? Maybe it's because both grey water evaporation fields for the entire city are only 100 yards from the river bank and Deer Creek where the fish need to spawn ? How stupid? ,yes you guessed it , In a very low swampy ground with a high water table to begin with and Yes that was done originally at the time on purpose. The success of the fish spawn in that vital section of the creek is critical but somehow powers at be believe the city's discharge has nothing to do with it. 2 years ago there was a large ammonia accident at the plant , how much went into the river then? , for years and years it's commonly known to be very difficult to get and keep any licensed people in operation of the local plant.The whole area smelled of ammonia so bad people held their breath when they went by in their car even while it was raining. DEQ acknowledged an accident but would release no info except to say it was safe the river cleaned and diluted the spill after all It's been rainy for week straight. The new plant operator was let go right around then because he allegedly didn't have a license. When people come up to their cottage for mothers day the town has been holding grey water all winter. Come spring their is a mad dash to get rid of a massive blast of grey water because the city can't hold anymore. The biggest challenge is to have weather cooperate with bright sunshine to dry everything out. Problem is the fields could still be covered in ice and are so saturated with a high water table the grey water can only run into the mouth of the Jordan. Which happens to be right where the fish need clean water the most . No way you can be compliant with the clean water act sending straight grey water into a receiving body of water. Examples like these are more common than you might want to know
