    Bravo not only to Aretha but to the outstanding vocals of her background singers!! Aretha always had great background singers on record or live and would let them shine either way!! She was very confident in her gift as a singer. No intimidation whatsoever!!❤

      I've said the same thing about her background singers, even on her new music (So Damn Happy album), the background singers voices were amazing!

    During this time she was the greatest singer in both gospel and R&B. She helped to shape the sound of gospel as we know it today. Think about it, the Clarks and others were heavily inspired by her soulful/acrobatic vocals.

      Donny Hathaway in that period belongs in the convo based on his recordings and performances of songs like Lord, Help Me and We Need You Right Now on the Gospel side of things, and on the R&B side, pretty much anything he touched.

      She definitely was ONE of the greatest singers in both genres. However MAHALIA JACKSON was the greatest gospel singer EVER. you had many great singers Ella Fitzgerald, Whitney Houston , Shirley Ceasar . Chaka Khan . Many GREAT singers

    Every time she sang a standing ovation was deserved. I listen to the current crop of "soul" singers and I despair. Aretha was a one-off never to be repeated. Thanks to God for youtube keeping this fabulous music alive.

    Unstoppable. Back in the late 90's/Early 2000s, i discovered pretty much all of Arethas 70s stuff on Napster...lol if anyone remembers Napster...lol . i remember downloading this song and falling in love with all of her great 70s stuff even if all of it wasn't big hits. She just had such a huge and wonderful catalogue of songs.

    My review:
    The first time I heard Giving Him Something He Can Feel made me blush and shot waves through me! I swear to God as I’m writing this, that song did something to the little kid in me! I wasn’t even a teenager yet! But Jesus, she sang that song in a way that grew me up inside! Aretha Franklins voice, phrasing, soul stirring arrangements and emotions ran me wild!! I would sneak and listen to that song bc it was so deep! I also felt that maybe, as a young kid, it was a song that I shouldn’t be hearing. Well I’m fully grown now and the song still moves me as it did then! Aretha is pure genius. I will forever miss her magic. 🙏🏽♥️

    She couldn't survive the way she did in the 70s without the assistance of Curtis Mayfield!!
    Dam right Curtis Mayfield wrote many many songs for Aretha that whole decade. What?
    You all thought she did it on her own? He even produced her songs!
    She recorded on curtis's record label...

    • @timmy841212
      @timmy841212 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Curtis only did two albums with Aretha. Sparkle and 1978's Almighty Fire, which flopped. Aretha spent all the 1970s on Atlantic. And her 70s hits were:
      Call Me (written by Aretha)
      Spirit in the Dark (also written by Aretha)
      Don't Play That Song for Me
      Bridge Over Troubled Water
      Daydreaming (another Aretha composition)
      Spanish Harlem
      Until You Come Back to Me
      This is easy to look up.

    • @christhomas5761
      @christhomas5761 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I know this is late and not taking anything away from Curtis but Aretha had many hits during the 1970`s without Curtis Mayfield . He only did two albums with Aretha , `Sparkle` which did well and gave her a needed boost and `Almighty Fire` which did not do well and had no hits.... Aretha gave great vocals and Curtis did his thing but disco music was dominating at the time... So actually she survived most of the 70`s without Curtis . Also you are wrong about Aretha recording on Curtis Mayfield`s label... It`s true he composed and produced those songs but the songs were recorded and released on the Atlantic record label .
