    Blackout blinds for the windows but don't board over them as when you are not filming and it's nice you can let some natural light.

    So sorry you guys had such a difficult move, I can sympathise as we had a terrible move 18months ago with similar issue to you guys. It took 4 skips to clear all the crap the old owners left in our home and once we cleared that we were left with fleas in the house and a gas leak which wasn't ideal at all. I'm sure you'll both get sorted real quick, what you've done so far is great just take it bit by bit.

    Congratulations! It’ll be a real nice once you get all set up. Don’t permanently block your windows, you’ll want the light and breeze (if they open) when you’re not filming. I’d also look at window tint so you can see out, but folks can’t see in. As for the pit, you might want to look at lining it, but I’d first get through the winter so see what kind of damp and/or water you get.

    Hi from the US! really enjoy your videos , I know it's hard work so thanks for sharing. As a fellow wworker,
    I like to see other craftpersons ideas, and techniques. I did rent space that had a basement, and the other 2 gentlemen who also rented space utilized the basement for air compressor / dust collection, it worked quite well, however we had to keep the equipment up off the floor, because of flooding. But noise control was good, storing wood (timber) was a problem. Keep up the good work

    Congratulations on the new house and workshop Keith!! I'm so excited for you and am looking forward to your next projects! Imagine all the cool things that could happen with all that extra room! It doesn't look as if there has been standing water in the pit, unless the previous owners cleaned off algae and such, but it doesn't hurt to wait and see. If it were me, I'd probably put my loudest items (air compressor, etc) in there for the sake of the neighbours. Cheers!

    Congratulations on the new shop keith. So much potential.
    With regards to your insulation / walls, CLS will be absolutely fine. (pressure treated stuff is absolute rubbish, just leave a piece on the floor out side for a year and see how it fairs.)
    As a professional Id strongly advise as opposed to installing a DPM behind the new wall, just build your wall an inch away from the existing thermolite block wall and insulate with rigid insulation board.
    If your new wall is completely independent from the existing masonry there is no way for damp to track through, just make sure you put some DPC between the sole plate and the floor. Its building controls preferred method for dealing with solid walls and Iv literally done hundreds of jobs this way.
    If you want any advise send me an email.
    Good luck with the new space.

    Congratulations on your new home. Some comments about your plans. The ceiling & loft floor - excellent idea. The framed walls - excellent idea. The wood storage area - excellent idea. The security - excellent idea. I recently framed out an old dairy with no ceiling and a sloped concrete floor for my workshop. Aside from the floor you’re doing the same as me. Regarding the inspection pit. Whatever you put in there needs to be something that you don’t want to access on a regular basis. Maybe paint and other inflammable items. That way if you ever have a fire, it would be easier and safer to extinguish. I can send you photos of my shop conversion if that helps.

    Cool. All the best with the new house and shop!
    I was checking in to say THANK YOU because I got what you got for your extraction system. I won't use it quite the same way, but your explanation was the decidng factor!
    Your inspection pit ... you could put your dehumidifier in there, but if you put it above ground, you can drain it off into the garden, or even a water butt ... use it to drain inti a tube and not its own water tank.
    What you could do is use the pit to store your big and bulky extraction system plastic container.

    Look into a product called resonance channel for the drywall installation. It limits sounds transmission by allowing the drywall to vibrate without transmitting it between spaces. I'm going to be installing that in my basement shop. Plus it's cheap!

First time I put my hand over the hose the barrel collapsed and it was a **** to get it back into shape. Once done it will collapse much easier so I have built a wooden frame inside it and this support seems to be working. Good luck with your new shop

  • @crossgrainwoodproductsltd9230
    @crossgrainwoodproductsltd9230 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Keith, What a big difference this space will make to your overall workflow and you'll have actual wood storage inside!! Now you can dumpster dive all you want! I was inspired by your dust collection add-on to your shop, so I built a "closet" like add on to my shop for the compressor and DC closet. The DC is a 2hp motor and sucks the paint off the walls it so strong!! I even installed two computer fans like yours. One to cool and the other to exhaust hot air and they are solar powered!! I have a 10 x 16 space and it is cramped and smaller than this new shop of yours. But I think you should consider doing the same setup with the larger space you need to upgrade the DC. Always keep the DC outside of the workspace, is my motto. To much super fine dust still gets through those bags. I also have an air scrubber hanging over my worktable where I do my sanding. Also, the DC closet is smaller aka easier to soundproof, and you won't have the noise of the DC in your ears. I'm debating to direct exhaust with a dryer vent or keep the cyclon and 55-gallon steel drum. I would highly recommend not taking the windows or the overhead door out for re-sale reasons and as someone else mentioned when your not filming you'll want natural light. I love having the oversized double doors in my shop. I just recently bought a large double garage door screen on clearance. I have a single door garage so the second door screen will be put on the double doors in the shop. No skeeters for me. You can check sites for replacement screens for Gazebos on [www.Wayfair.com] if you can't find the ones for garage doors. They are cheap right now and with the Gazebo panels, they are all different sizes and there is a zipper up the middle of each panel to be used as the doorway. I can't decide if it will be attached to a wood frame or just roll it up. You can tack it up on the inside trim or use velcro tabs. When not in use, just roll it up and velcro it up to the top trim. I hope that helps. I don't know how bad musketeers are in England but here on the east coast of America, they are as big as toy poodles and just as annoying, lol! This way I can work in the shop or garage where my metalwork area is set up at night which I love to do if I can't sleep. Sorry for the long babble. ;>(

    Congratulations on the move and here's hoping for many happy years in your new home. The workshop I have to say is an amazing upgrade but could I suggest that when you build the double opening doors in the partition wall rather than having them hinged you could suspend them on a runner rail that way they will only take up minimal space when you need them open and still allow full access to your wood storage area

    Regarding the pit... the real question is if it is dry or if water ever comes in there. If it is at all damp, then it's not much good for any sort of storage. I'm thinking that the air compressor idea is the best one.

    • @Agamemnon2
      @Agamemnon2 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, a storage space like that could be more trouble than it's worth.

    • @Wordsnwood
      @Wordsnwood 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      PS: forget the pit -- put the dust collector in the ATTIC, but have the dust box below the rafters in the shop space -- so you can easily empty the bin, but the noise of the motor is above the insulation. Ditto the compressor. Put it up top. Add a little insulation around it to protect the neighbours and you're golden.

    Been following you since your early days on YT Kieth. Great to see your progression. A well deserved upgrade in workspace fella, which I'm sure you'll make good use of. Your pit actually looks pretty dry. I know it's summer but if it had a water problem, you'd still see it. Compressor and extraction would probably be fine down there, kept off the floor for good measure. One thing I would say is that if you had kit down there, you need to keep the access - which loses you floorspace, or at least makes it a pain in the ass to clear when you need access. Personally, I'd forget about it. Make a little lean-to like you used to have for extract/compressor outside. Space you lose from the pit, you gain in floor. If you must use it, just have it as a paint store for stuff you use in the house. We all end up with tins of that that only need to come out once in a blue moon for a touch up. Good luck mate.

    • @RagnBoneBrown
      @RagnBoneBrown  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great advice 👍 I was thinking of having a massive assembly table (a full 8x4 sheet) on wheels and maybe having that over the pit so that it’s easy to shove out of the way. So many ideas and possibilities though!

    Congratulations to you both on finally getting your move and good luck with your fantastic new workshop, could you board over the pit and install a hatch at one end then place your tablesaw over the top you could use the pit to house large construction bags to collect all your dust and shavings ? just a thought.

    If you do keep the extraction system and compressor in the pit the heat given off will help the damp if it does get damp. Also a small space heater like the one they use for airing cupboards would be good. Obviously heat rises so it would work up to the workshop aswell.

    The pit seems like the perfect spot for a cold plunge pool to go along with a sauna that you could build off in the corner. I mean, you have so much space now. Why not?
    Is there any need to worry about thermal bridging at the pilasters in your area? Would it ever get cold enough to keep you from working in the shop during the winter. Here in Canada we’s frame and insulate the whole inside to an R12 at least (2x4 walls with r12 fibreglass insulation, vapour barrier and drywall).
    I’m very jealous of your new shop. Congratulations and all the best in the new place. I look forward to all of the news to follow.
