Earlier in the episode, Carmela points out how everyone only laughs at Tony’s jokes out of fear, not respect.
It’s sad when Tony realises that because Feech didn’t laugh at his joke, he doesn’t fear him, which means he has to go. Even sadder, that this meant Tony couldn’t afford to have people who respected him in his life, only people who fear him.

One of the previous scenes was brilliant. During an argument, Carmela tells Tony that his 'friends' all laugh at his unfunny jokes purely out of fear and self-preservation. Later, when Tony's at the club and everyone is laughing at his joke in slow-motion, the only one with a straight face is Feech -- he stands apart. Tony tolerated his bullshit up till that moment, but once he had this realisation, it's over.
Another great example of 'therapy' of sorts allowing Tony to glean insights that make him a more ruthless boss. He ended up truly friendless.

This is true. What most people don't know is there never was supposed to be THIS Season 5. Season 5 was supposed to be the last season. Feech was never supposed to be in the show. No Animal Blundetto. No "Johnny Cakes" story. No Phil Leotardo. No Angelo.
The original Season 5 was just supposed to be New Jersey and New York have a beef, Tony drives into New York to settle it and he gets whacked. The way things ended with Melfi in Season 6 Part 2 was originally written for Season 5.
Somehow HBO convinced David Chase to make a Season 6 and 7. He wrote the Season 5 we got, and was so disgusted he told HBO he was going to only do a Season 6 that cleaned up all the mess of Season 5, then end it. I'm not sure how the actor who played Vito convinced Chase to add Johnny Cakes into Season 6 when all Chase wanted to do was wrap it up.
It cracks me up that Chase was talked into anything. The guy is one of the most disagreeable people I've ever seen/heard.

He thought it was still "his day" but it wasn't anymore. He looked at Tony as a twenty year old kid still and had trouble taking orders from him like Ritchie.
Some of these mob guys seem to subconsciously think they are owed something for doing a long prison stretch like a man. When it is really what they are expected to do when they took the oath. Feech, Ritchie and Phil all seemed to have a bit of an attitude and chip on their shoulder when they got out.

What you have to understand is what Ralph said back in season 3, that Feech was made on the other side, so he was OG. To have someone like that come back into the fold, to take orders from the new generation that stepped in, it’s not good for anybody. If he was allowed to roam free, he would have kept causing problems until he got himself killed.

Weird thing to consider: Tony was so willing to avoid the stigma of ratting out Feech that he sacrificed a truckload of perfectly good stolen TVs to frame him. Kill the guy, and then what? Skip town? He wouldn't be safe in any other state because he's a known member of Tony's crew and there would be BOLOs out for him everywhere.
His only option would be to try to go back to Italy, where he was originally from, and time would be of the essence because once the supervisor didn't report back at the end of the day, they would backtrack his schedule of stops for the day and connect the dots.
In fact Italy might not even be a viable option because law enforcement over there would likely be given a heads up.
I think it's safe to say there was no way out of this.

Feech never had the makings of a captain, much less, a boss. Feech was a short term player who could never see the big picture, or more than 5 feet in front of him. This is why he did twenty years in the first place, and then went right back in can shorty after coming out!
