Savage Mark II .22 LR vs. Ruger 10/22 Accuracy Comparison - Shooting form plays a big role

  • It wasn't until after that fact that I noticed my shooting form with the bolt gun, a Savage Mark II, was inconsistent by lifting my cheek and head off of the stock to work the bolt. This required me to reacquire the target each time and actually reset for each shot. This resulted in more open groups and not as tight of a pattern than if the shooting form had been more consistent. While shooting the Ruger 10/22 the cheek and head remain in contact with the stock, the eye never comes away from the scope and the target is maintained during the entire 10 shot group. This helps in creating tighter groups as well as quicker rounds. In all I think both guns preform well and that they are comparable in accuracy. I tend to prefer the semi-auto action with the .22 LR as it is easier to shoot for me personally.

    I took my Savage Mark II out earlier today and was consistently putting entire 10 round magazines through one jagged hole smaller than a quarter at 50 yards. Vortex Crossfire II 3x9x40 scope and Federal AUTOMATCH 40 grain round nose bullets. It is a tac driver. Good shooting there with both platforms brother 👏

      I've since changed the scope on this rifle and I can shoot some nice tight groups with it. It isn't a Vortex (I wish it was) but it has the magnification for me to see the target clearly at 50 yards. I like the Federal Automatch too. It shoots well out of my Ruger 10-22s and this Savage. I really like this Mark II as it shoots well. Love hearing yours is a tac driver for sure. Thanks!!

    ....our Target and Target Tactical 10/22's are outshooting most of the bolt action @100 yards at the range. Consistent scope alignment helps with shot placement and group size, with compatible ammo we can hold sub 1MoA for 10 rounds in reasonable conditions. Good video and honest assessment!

      Thanks. After doing this and seeing my short comings I came to the realization that if I were ever to do some type of competition (Bench rest, 22LR, 100 yds and less) that I'd want a 10/22 for the very reasons you outlined above. Just the simple fact of manually working a bolt would through me off point. I'd love to see if I could shoot my 10/22 sub MoA at 100 yards. I'll have to play around with that just to see what kind of 100 yard groups I can get.

      @@cervus-venator ...2 steps to good 100 yard groups. Firstly the torque on the stock bolt for a free-floating barrel makes a huge difference. Then the ammo. It doesn't need to be match quality. It needs to be consistent (low ES and SD) and suit your barrel. We tested a lot and found CCI Tactical, Geco semiauto and Eley Action grouped better than the other CCI, SK, RWS, Fiocchi etc. we tried @100 yards. A good scope helps too! We both shoot Hawke Panorama 6-18x50 which are good enough. Good luck with your 10/22, the search for good accuracy is the best/worst part of ownership!

    I costed myself a 8 point the other day by raising my head up soon as my muzzle loader went off. I usually don’t miss with that gun but I did I thought I had myself broke from that bad habit by shooting archery tournaments but I did it day before yesterday. Never split a hair in him

      Aw man, sorry to hear that. I used to shoot 3D archery all over the southeast back in the late 80's to early 90's. I hardly shoot my bow any more. I shoot my muzzle loader about once every 5 years. LOL. Sound's like you are getting closer to harvesting a deer.

    Is 10/22 a model number for Rugar or something? Sorry I’m completely new and we don’t have any model that says 10/22. Just Rugar 22LR basic cheap model.

    • @cervus-venator
      @cervus-venator  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes Richard that's correct it's a model designation. I think it is because the standard magazine is 10 rounds and it is a 22LR so they called it the Ruger 10/22. Also it is a semi-automatic. There are other Ruger 22LR like the Ruger American 22 as well as the Ruger Precision Rimfire. There are many variants of the Ruger 10/22 such as the Carbine, Takedown, Target, Tactical, Sporter, competition and more. I hope this helps some.

    • @cervus-venator

      Yeah I am sure it is a great looking and performing gun. The only thing that is original on mine in this video is the receiver. The stock, the barrel, the buffer, the bolt, the trigger and trigger assembly were all changed out. I have a take down model that I changed the barrel, stock and trigger assembly on. Then I bought another take down receiver and put together another takedown 10/22 with the parts from the original that I had taken off. I got tired of seeing the stock and barrel sitting in the corner so I thought I'd build another one. I just needed a receiver and bolt. To me it is just fun making and modifying these things.

      Shoot yeah. I have 3 Marlin Model 60's and love to shoot them. One is from the mid-80's, another from the early 2000s and the last is from 2019 I think. It could be 2020, but I think it is 2019. I love shooting these and I need to do a comparison video of the three that I have.

    • @cervus-venator
      @cervus-venator  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Tuffy!! The scopes were not the same. The Savage has a cheaper Simmons and a 3-9 x50 where as the Ruger has a Vortex Crossfire II 4-16 x44

      @@cervus-venator Thanks for the quick response. It would be interesting to see the results of a test if the scopes were switched. I also have the same two rifles with different scopes and I think I will run the above suggested test for a true comparison using CCI Standard Velocity Ammo at 50 yards..

      That's really cool. I shot a few videos yesterday as we are supposed to get rain for most of the coming week. We desperately need it too. I now have about 10 maybe 12 videos on camera cards that I need to edit and get ready to post. One that I shot yesterday was on my Kahr CT9 although I didn't hit the plate that well. I may have to try that one again or I could just show that sometimes I can't hit squat.
